    I’m curious about wind. How import is it to shield your hives from wind? The hives in your video didn’t seem to have any shield. Thank you!

    • @kayalaayala3625
      @kayalaayala3625 5 วันที่ผ่านมา

      If you live somewhere that gets a lot of wind, I would try to block the wind. I had a hive last year get knocked over because the wind got bad. I live in northern Colorado, first time bee owner. Now we tie the hives down with ropes and untie if we need to get into them.

      We’re in Texas - most here put rocks or something heavy on the cover to keep it from flying off in gusts. I was more asking in terms of day to day bee health. I am a new beekeeper and just built my apiary for my first two hives. They have some wind break from small trees but not a full break. I read on TBC website it’s best to point the opening away from oncoming wind and not facing north, so I’ll plan to do that. Thanks!!

    Use Amdro fire ant bait. Won’t affect the bees. The ants will take it underground quick if you apply it at the right time of day and season. Bees don’t want it.

    Is there a way to use that old comb in swarm traps without wax moths destroying it and the frames? They always get in my old comb. I thought maybe pulling every other frame to leave a wider space between frames might help.

    • @sfroutdoors4014
      @sfroutdoors4014 หลายเดือนก่อน

      I’ve heard of people open storing comb that has never had brood in it with success so you could probably use the cleaned out honey comb. Any of the comb that has had brood you’ll want to freeze at a minimum for a couple days or a week and store in a secure box or bag. Maybe even treat it with paramoth or some other type of treatment. I’ve heard folks have good luck with industrial trash bags for storage when sealed up well. Hope this helped

    • @jamesbarron1202
      @jamesbarron1202 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @ your not getting what I’m getting at. I’m not storing it. I’m using it in swarm traps to capture wild swarms. Wax moths get in the swarm traps and destroy it.

    I try to build up my hives with winter bees in the late summer. They are overwintering in NY and I check them every few days without opening them up with my FLIR camera. I also check there using Broodminder. I pop the lid every 2 weeks to add Hivealive fondant if needed. It’s been working out pretty well for me as I only have a few hives. OA treatments coming soon too. I wish you a Happy Thanksgiving and I enjoy all of your videos.
