Austrian smoked cheese is a personal favourite for me during the festivities of December. Certainly the dappled sunshine through the leaves has been like Mother Natures spiritual cleansing.

I’ve heard that the Huddersfield canal, after long periods of hot weather, is notorious for its shallow bottom, to be totally honest though, it has crossed my mind in thinking I wouldn’t want anything metal destroying my propeller or hull blacking, or having it dislodge a bin bag containing body parts.

It's really not very deep, you are more or less skimming the bottom! I think the assumption is that another boat has been through that way before you - so it should be clear!!

Yes, as it happens, if we had of gone the urban challenged way, in all likelihood we would have broken down somewhere on the Wolverhampton Flight, which would not have been as lovely a place as the town of Penkridge with its gorgeous bakery "Jasper's" home of the best pork pie I've ever eaten.

I shouted my thanks out to a chap sitting in the garden adjacent to the home baked cake stall, he looked up from his newspaper briefly, waved and went back to reading. Such a lovely thing to do for the community of boaters and those who use the tow path for recreation. Looking back there was a fair bit of change in that money tin...I know there was a CCTV warning, but I still admire the trust in community. The Bakewell slice had a shortcrust base and was crunchy and delicious.

The area is somewhat of a rural contradiction Richard, on the one hand you have stretches of varying colours of green as far as the eye can see, intermittently dotted with the authority of gargantuan wind turbines, that from distant inspection anyway, are mightily silent despite showing their strength. Then there’s the roads, where it seems each one lead you to a roundabout with an exit to one of the many rail freight terminals. This place is neither the city nor the countryside, but a place in-between…. It’s oddly welcoming to me.

@@talltalesfromanarrowboat I know what you mean! Growing up in South Lincolnshire, I was surrounded by crop fields and woodlands, yet you also had these oddly anonymous foundries and industrial estates tucked around the place. As a kid, I knew instinctively they were the alien food plants from Quatermass and conversion centres for Cybermen!

Looks like a lovely spot! Take some time to work out your power needs - sound like your getting on fine, and haven’t run out of power yet. Remember there are two sides of the equation. How much you can generate, from the engine/solar/generatior, and how much you use! 2 mins for microwave rice will use less than 20 mins in the convection oven! The engine should be generating 40A or more to charge your batteries. A generator and battery charger will produce 20A - so take twice as long (but may be better to power your coffee maker!). Have you spoken to people who have solar, to see how much they realistically get out of them. They will help, but I’m not convinced they will match your demands - especially in winter!

@@JulianKemp Thank you Julian, but just to let you know, when on tick over, the engine barely gets above 10 / 12A mate. And when applying a little more throttle it does not get much above 20A. I'd love to 40A but nowhere near, which is why I am having to run the engine around 6 hours a day, and then my batteries are up to around 30%. If I used the starlink router they'd be down to 10% BY THE MORNING. As is, with the fridge over night, if I go to be when they're on 30% I wake up and theyre down to about 15%

@@talltalesfromanarrowboat have you checked your belt tightness? That sounds like what we were seeing when it was loose. When Barney tightened it, you were getting 40-45A. You can have a Quick Look - engine off (of course) there shout be much movement in the beer - it’s at the front of the engine!

I'll be sure to do a full boat tour once the interior is to my liking my friend! The finishing line is still a fair bit off in the distance but I can just about make it out, at least I am on the right track... and for me that's truly saying something!
