All about Nottingham history!
Nottingham 1902 Tram Ride - Original vs Upscaled
I recently upscaled a fascinating video of a tram ride through Edwardian Nottingham City Centre in 1902. Since doing this, I wanted to make a side-by-side comparison video of what the original video looked like vs the new!
The upscaled video can be found here - th-cam.com/video/vPK51hyRRVg/w-d-xo.html
You may notice the videos are a little out of sync. This is expected behaviour, as the 'interpolation' process will generate new frames between the old ones and thus to fit the new interpolated video into the same time frame, the length of each frame has to change. This can create an out of sync effect when viewing the videos side-by-side. It's reduced to nothing by the end of the video, but is very noticeable at the start.
I hope to bring some light into Nottinghams past and how much the city has changed in 120 years, but also to restore some loving memories people may have.
I hope you enjoy!
The route is as follows - Station Street, Carrington Street, Lister Gate, Albert Street, St. Peters Square, Wheeler Gate, Old Market Square, Long Row, Queen Street, Milton Street.

Nottingham 1902 - 2022 Comparison [With Upscaled Video]

'Nottingham Tram Ride In 1902' Video Restoration [Colourised, Upscaled, FPS boosted, Added Sound]
มุมมอง 7K2 ปีที่แล้ว
I used the power of Artificial Intelligence to restore this fascinating 120 year old video of a tram ride through Edwardian Nottingham City Centre. The original was recorded by Sagar Mitchell and James Kenyon in 1902 aboard one of Nottingham Corporations old trams. This new version has been produced in 2022 to mark 120 years since it was recorded. I hope to bring some light into Nottinghams pas...
At the start of the video on the left the 1904 Midland Station building hasn’t been built! The old Midlands Goods Office on Carrington St. still has exactly the same exterior, though now a very different use. Very recognizable, even without the travel cues. As the tram turns from Long Row into King Street, you see the worst act of vandalism where Watson Fothergill’s masterpiece - the Black Boy Hotel in 1970 became Littlewoods, then BHS and now Primark. Fortunately there is still a fine Fothergill example on the Long Row/King Street corner called Queen’s Chambers
IT WOULD'VE BEEN BETTER IF YOU HAD GIVEN US THE NAME OF THE ROAD AT THE START, SO WE COULD GET THE GIST OF WHERE IT WAS.
Read the description.
truly amazing. Thanks!
its sad to see what has been lost in the name of the car
Wow amazing- thank you for bring this together
Great stuff and thanks for sharing. .I think people have done similar for some of the "Carry On..." films, showing the back-projection car scenes and where they were filmed now. In a similar vein I really like the Star Wars / Dam busters side by side comparison here; www.youtube.com/
Great film so interesting to see against modern times :)
The building demolished to make way for what is now Poundland. Oh boy. What were they thinking?
Whato all, Another sequence ruined by bad colourisation. Why bother?
We used to be a serious country.
Outstanding!! Grateful for your time.
Brilliant!
You Made a Great Job On This. Well Done...I Lived In Nottingham In 1960s...Thanks For Share..From Donegal..
Thanks so much buddy, I'm glad you enjoyed it 😁🙏
"Artificial intelligence", 🥶🥶right, is there any other sort.
Real live history!
great! - i watched the original, and now it's brilliant being able to watch it again with a modern day comparison, what an experience! great job!!!
Great work.! I came across the original video a while back but this is great use of it, lovely to see.
Thanks very much ☺️
Great vid!
Thanks very much 🥰
The city has changed so much over the last 100 years
And not for the better either...
And in 1802 it would have been very different from 1902. Very few of the buildings seen in the 1902 film would have existed
You've done a great job there!
Thanks very much! 😊
Good job dude, cheers for uploading this. I’ve always been fascinated with looking at comparisons just like this 👍🏼 years ago I went round Carlton and Mapperley taking photos of buildings and streets that I’d found on picturethepast to analyse the changes
Thanks very much! I had a great time making it, glad you enjoyed. Indeed Nottingham has changed a lot in the past 120 years or so. It's a crying shame, we could have had a beautiful well preserved Victorian city, but I feel we have a bit more of a janky mess of new and old. I love the city we have, but I feel like we missed out on a lot!
Very Interesting! I thought the tram was going to Sherwood but it turned back towards city centre. The video is not on normal speed is it?
It seems to be moving forward toward Sherwood at the end but cuts out. The video has been 'speed corrected' which attempts to play the video at a more realistic speed.
This is gorgeous! Really well done - I was particularly impressed with the sound design. I imagine that took a long time!
Did take a while to put together indeed! Thanks very much for your kind comments ☺️
Is that Carrington Street goods offices and sheds in the start of the footage ?
Yes it is, goes through what is/was the old Broadmarsh area through to Lister gate. You can see the old Yates pub when it gets to the market square.
Fascinating!
