The Book of Decline And it came to pass in those days that the people were scattered across the land, from the purple mountains to the amber waves of grain. Yet, their hearts were hardened, and they did grow foolish in their ways. Lo, they were as lesser beings, devoid of wisdom and bereft of feeling. They were as sheep led astray by the greediocracy, the rulers of the land who governeth with deceit and fed the flock with the fear of the Almighty, the fear of change, and the fear of truth. The commandments of old were forgotten, and none among them did learn from the past. They did sing songs of their nation with hollow hearts, never seeking the truth behind the words. They dwelt in a land of stagnation, a union divided within itself. There was a man named Jerry, who wandered into the land of Michigan, a place of exile for twenty years. He had sinned greatly and paid the price-a single dime. And in that land, a dime could buy much, but in the land of California, a dime was but a fine. Jerry’s time in exile was brief, for he found little joy in his suffering. As the days grew long, he chose to end his pain swiftly, with the simple breath of death. Better this, he thought, than to endure seventeen years as a servant in bondage. And the people did watch from their homes, sipped their wine, and spake among themselves, “His burden is not mine.” They were taught to be model citizens, yet their hearts were far from righteousness. They turned their eyes away from the fire that burneth, and they stayed in the comfort of their ignorance. A father, in his sorrow, spake of his son, to whom he had given a gift-a rifle of small caliber. Nightly, the son cherished this gift, keeping it clean and polished, knowing each cartridge, each shell. But down by the creek, beneath the brush and dirt, there lay the carcass of his second kill. And by the park, under stone and pine, lay the body of his brother, William. “Brother, where hast thou gone?” the son cried, for he had not meant to sin so greatly. He remembered the lessons taught: “Shoot straight, squeeze the trigger; a clean kill is what thou seekest, for a kill is why we breed.” And so he learned the way of violence, as his people had before him. The devout clung to their guns and prayed fervently for salvation, yet they preyed upon those of lesser faith. The sacred texts were read, and every line believed, though logic was cast out as heresy. Reason was seized, and wisdom was silenced. A woman named Sara did drift away, her mind troubled and her spirit broken. She left behind a message that none would hear, though her heart spake sincerely. Her voice was lost among the multitude, her cries unheard. The people were as sheep led astray, their thoughts shaped by the false prophets of the airwaves. They sang songs of false harmony, crafted to lull them into complacency. “Do not care,” they were told, and they did not care. Wagers were placed upon their greed, their pride, and none thought to challenge the rulers, for many had tried and failed. They were as the harlot, intellectually spayed; they were as the stranger, raised without purpose. One more pill to dull the pain, one more prayer to stave off the darkness. They prayed for safety, for warmth, for a better place, but they had lost their way. The battle was lost, and so was the war; the things worth living for slipped away. They paid not attention but rent, and their sins were laid upon their kin. A little faith, they thought, would keep them safe. Yet the times were dire, the future bleak, and resistance seemed folly. Only a fool or a sage would fight against the tide, against the great ego that governed all. And so the people went on with their lives, knowing the truth but preferring lies, for lies were simple and simple was bliss. Why go against tradition when thou couldst admit defeat and live in decline? Thus, they became victims of their own design, content with the status quo, built upon a foundation of doubt. Few dared to stand out, for fear of losing what little they had gained. “We have ours,” they said to one another, and welcomed new members into their fold. The host had his, and so did they. “Welcome to the decline,” they proclaimed. They were as the stranger and the harlot, ammunition in the class war, sacrificing themselves for the sake of the powerful. They were the workers, who loved their queen, who gave themselves to be consumed. This is the story of a people in decline, who lived in united stagnation, turning away from truth and wisdom, and embracing their own undoing.

I have 3 questions. But only 2. & 3. are actually needing a reply. 1. Does anyone know why comments are blocked in most of the record recordings of this song posted on TH-cam? 😮 2. Can someone make a karaoke version of this song, please? It doesn't have to be perfect, just a light stripping of the vocals and then the lyrics at the correct time. This would be so fun to do karaoke. And although I have the song memorized for over 20-25+ years (sometime around there), now, I get too nervous on front of people at karaoke and I'll be too scared I'll mess up something if I don't have the lyrics there. Heck, if I could find a lyrics video to this, I'd even be willing to sing it along with record with or without vocals stripped. 😅 3. This was a pretty lazy performance from Davey. The others gave it their all but he was just so dainty about it. If you’re not gonna go all in don’t sing the song Not like the guy is in poor shape, he flaunts his gym obsession daily.
