Thank you so much! I’m new to working w driftwood and really appreciate the info. Can you tell me what grit sandpaper you use initially? Do you ever bleach the wood initially just to ensure it’s “clean” prior to using any stain/wax/poly? What if I want to stain it? Do I just stain it after it’s been sanded, and bleached (if you do that step?) if you do stain it, what is the best type of stain to use?
Hey Cheryl!! What part of the globe are you from?? Thanks for watching...i will do me best to answer your questions. (1) GRIT- so depending on the condition of the wood I may start with 60 grit if really course or rough....I would then work my way up to 320....if the wood is already fairly smooth I might start with 120 then work through 180 and so forth up to 320. (2) BLEACH- so this is a topic of much discussion...well for me it depends on how I am going to use the final piece, what condition its currently in, etc. I do not do driftwood for aquariums and there is a whole different process for that. What I typically do if its really nasty is power-wash. If I am going to use a grinder or 60 grit, I might skip cleaning all together and reevaluate once I get it cleaned up.... (3) STAIN...I do not use "stain" but do use oils and different types of oils and sealers to get the look I want. I like to bring out the natural color of wood so I avoid the stain. (4) STAIN cont'd... if you do want to stain it, then stain after final sand. ...I think you will have better results with TUNG OIL- BEESWAX- LINSEED OIL- etc... I hope all this helps and thank you again from Central Texas!!
Almost think if I was gonna use those flat round pieces to join them, I might have routed out flat circular slots to fit them on at the angle I wanted the metal to screw into them. So tricky though and you got it looking awesome. I like the less burned look, personally with this technique but for a room that the black is going to be the feature, I think this is AMAZING! Thanks for the shout out!
Hey Karen...I probably should have asked first...hope you don't mind. Ya I thought about router as well but just in case it didn't work I till wanted clean pieces for something else. Hope all is well!!

Hey man, new subscriber here, I've watched several of your vids looking for ideas, inspirations and tips as I am forever collecting branches and driftwood because of their beauty! You do beautiful work and this piece is amazing! I have been looking for a piece to do a dough bowl and this is EXACTLY my vision of what I want to do. We should start a club of people who can't stand 90 degrees and unblemished wood :D ! Anyway, one little thing that I have found that I offer in appreciation for your videos is using shish kabob skewers as a nail to strengthen those random cracks and brittle pieces. They are very resistant to shearing, the grains are usually very long and they swell just a tiny bit with the wood glue.
I have been looking for one of those clamp saw horse for months. I guess I will go to their website now I see the name.

@@JDUB-Woodworks yes, perfect for the coming season! I love pumpkins. My house is decorated in them all year round.
@@TheKarenKeener well it's 100 degrees here in central Texas today BUT...fall is coming hopefully.
I like using drift wood in my art projects. Everthing I have used turned my wood dark brown. I don't sand it down because I like the grey petina, which is probably causing the problem. The drift wood I use is not huge like the piece he used in the video. Mine are usually small pieces with deep creviaces or curley pieces.........and getting to all the spots are very difficult. Any suggestions?
Hey there!! I like the polycrylic ...it's water based and I used it over another piece with grey patina and it works well. If I sand on small pieces I use Dremel or just do the best I can with my hand
@@JDUB-Woodworksooh…good tip w the Dremel!

JDub, as always , wonderful video and awesome work my brother! ✌️

Love it! Turned out perfect!
Ya that one was fun!! I'm running out of room!!
Wow! Amazing piece and great to see it on the wall. It would look nice in a seafood restaurant or aquarium because it still feels like a fish.
Ahh! Yes! I always saw a fish of some sort..even though I try not to do that. The piece has a way of speaking to us....I find comfort in that. Take care.
FYI- my husband fixes vintage guitar necks. He uses the saw dust from the piece he is working on so the wood matches. Then he uses a clear epoxy to fill gaps and because it’s the saw dust from the same piece, it matches the wood perfectly. That might be a good solve for future gaps to fill.
Hey Karen!! Thanks for watching!!! That is a brilliant idea and I will certainly try it.
When they break off, you could have it as a three piece installation. You could mount them all to some kind of metal or dark wood or painted wood back drop side by side.
That’s a great suggestion. It’s kinda like you capitalize on the fact that it broke and don’t hide it at all.
Do they have smaller versions of that ball sander attachment?
not for a grinder, but they do have them for a Dremel. I just never used it.
@@JDUB-Woodworks I have to find that.
@@JDUB-Woodworks I will have to look for those. Then they may clear out narrower caverns in the wood pieces.
30 seconds of ASMR! Ha!
Thank you for this video. I have been harvesting driftwood from Ogden River from late spring and have a good cache to create sculptures, painting and other crafts with. I love true natural sculpture look as you have created here. I am glad someone is demonstrating a pretty simple process for getting that look. Nice job. Great piece!
That’s a great compliment thank you so much. I try to keep it natural most of the time once you get a few pieces completed. Make sure and share them. I’d love to see what you did.
The Ogden rivers in Utah, correct?
@@JDUB-Woodworks yes, Utah. It’s nice that we live on the river so I just walk out my back door and can collect wood daily that would otherwise become a fire hazard for the local forest and homes. It’s a win win.

Thank you for sharing this video. What do you think of bleaching the wood? I have a piece of wood with a lot of natural stain on it. Some parts are darker than others. I am hesitant to sand them as they are delicate parts, what would you recommend?
you are certainly welcome and thank you for checking out my videos and my channel. I do not delete bleach my Driftwood however I recognize that in some uses it’s needed. I don’t mind the different tones of the wood on one piece even if I’m not putting a sealant on it because it’s perfect really.
