English Guy making Videos in Finland.
I traveled from Oxfordshire to Pori via road in 2022.
Eating, drinking, and exploring my way through a new journey.
I am planning on exploring as much of the Finnish culture as possible and documenting it on the way.
Currently, I am a TH-cam/Video editing novice, but I will learn fast!
As part of my cultural assimilation, I will also be learning the Finnish spoken language and hopefully helping others on the way.

I didn't find there was a jazz event after coming here, was it only held in early summer?
Good video!
Welcome to finland and have a great coming winter. Remember to sauna and ice swim hehee
Thank you! I did not try ice swimming yet, but it's on my list of things to do :)
I think Tom could have drawn you into his pictures.
Amazing compliment haha, thanks!
Sounds cool! What was your favourite thing about Ruka?
I really enjoyed how it felt so far removed from day-to-day life and the fresh air and nature!
Thanks for watching :)
Do you like helsinki?
That first "castle" is a fantasy castle from the early 1900's.
I think I will go back again in the future when they have an event there.
@@englandtofinland They used to have childrens happenings in there, when I was a kid. But that was in the 80's.
I love that you proceed to watch the art beyond the subjects. There is nothing wrong to watch (somewhat) rare pictures of beautiful men and men in love (and other stuff), but too many get stuck to that and misses the pure talent that he had. Portraits were magnificent!
While I was looking at the portraits I was thinking 'if I studied to draw for ALL of my life... I still wouldent be able to make these'
@englandtofinland Same 😁
Have you visited Kiasma yet?
What should I aim to do in year 2 in Finland?
Hi. I've been following your channel. How are you?
Im doing great :) how are you?
Auto is the Finnish for car.

I'm from Ostrobothnia and I've never seen a rug washing station in my life. I guess it's a culture thing in some places. There are very few places untouched by humans left in Finland. Old-growth forest still exists, but it's quite rare and mostly in protected areas in the north and east. But conservation areas are increasing and the nature is very clean. We have some of the cleanest air in the world.
I had to pop back over to England and as soon as I landed I could feel the air quality difference
Hold Your horses... You Have never seen a - rug washing station - in Your Life ? Where Do You wash Your RUGS Then ? IS IT just You - or Your Town that has None ?

Is parakeet the correct translation for undulaatti? When I learned English we were taught it's called umm, like buggeryboo or something along those lines.
I think a Parakeet is a generic term for most small/medium-sized pet birds and most people call them a budgie as well. I personally have never needed to use the word much and just call them birds
@@englandtofinland Oh, it was budgie!

That's going to be your last Starbucks for a long time! We only have two Starbucks in Finland and those are in Helsinki.
I no longer have any need for Starbucks. We have a mocha master!
For a really good reason...😘
I have seen them in city markets.
American has just made Finnish Coffee drinking - Popular - In The USA ! They NEEDED a name - but METROSTARS was taken at The Time !
Cheers! Keep up the great videos. I’m an Canadian American living in Pori. It’s rare to see foreigners here so your videos are pretty relatable. As a citizen from Europe can you just live and work in Finland? I had to apply for resident permit to able to do anything. What made you choose Finland as a place to move from a great country like England?
There's still paperwork to do to live and work in Finland. My partner is Finnish and I have been visiting quite often over the years and the place grew on me a little more each time. I think Finland suits my personality a little more compared to the busy UK, the pace of life is definately a big selling point for me.
As for the subtitles, I always use the English subtitles, because the Finnish subtitles are absolute garbage, they should fire the whole team who's translating the subs to FInnish
A lot of them are nowadays done automatically and a human just checks up on it in places.
I am afraid you're witnessing the results of firing the competent translators or not giving then reasonable time to do reasonable job. Now they area buying only quick and dirty and perhaps automatic translations.
My next task for the channel is to add English subtitles properly aswell, since at the moment I'm using the auto translate.
@@englandtofinland Some people use reading English subtitles to avoid having to understanding the too many English variations mainly in pronunciation but also in vocabulary. So very few speak very clearly like the queen does.😉 Trying to understand Nigerian, Ugandan, Kenyan, Indian... not to mention the many British variations, is challenging for someone what hasn't really been so immersed to all versions of English and has learned it as a second or third foreign language.
@@englandtofinland TH-cam generated English subtitles are really funny.
Interesting good stuff 👍
Thanks :)!
I started English classes at 7th grade and i was already pretty fluent with it because of television 😅
3rd grade for me, so I pretty much studied English 9+ years, and I've kept it going with TV and Internet... Not so much with Swedish or German though, a shame really :D
It's quite interesting listening to all the versions English accents over here because of how the different TV they have watched has influenced it.
@@House_of_Caine 3rd grade for me too, Swedish started at 7th.
Minä is also mä. Sinä is also sä. When Finns speak they use mä and sä. I am name , minä olen name or mä oon name. You are name, sinä olet name or sä oot name.
Good to know, thank you. I have been told lots of duolingo is quite formal compared to how Finns actually speak
Can also be mää or mie, depending on the dialect/accent
Bear is karhu. Otso is one of the nick names for karhu, but it's more used for example in children's stories, not in everyday conversations about bears.
I remember karhu from the beer label!
Welcome. I hope you like our weird country.
Thank you, I am very impressed by it and the people are super nice
Finland is not a weird country.
Did you go and have a beer in The Beer Hunters Bar on the square....

@@englandtofinland no I didn't buddy... But if you want a good nite out go to Bar Jolene Karaoke it's great Craic ..... I was there the nite it opened... Brilliant nite
There's also a small spa in Pori, in Yyteri. Yyteri is also the best beach in Finland. Water is very warm at the moment. We have been there every day now.
'Yyteri the best beach in Finland' this sounds like a good name for a video ;)
Do remember to visit - White Nights - Reposaari ! Americans used IT on a Hollywood Movie - as a Siberian Village at CCCP / USSR ! Take a walk at The Boothill too - to see HEAD Stones of foreigners that has drowned - trying to reach The Harbour at Reposaari Island ! There Way NO WAY connection - before The 60s ! Notice that There IS a building called LONTOO - and Tango singer EINO GRÖN has lived at The House too !
Very nice tour my bro, amazing spa, have a nice week! 💚✨
Thank you brobeans :)
Interesting video, especially rug washing 😁. Speaking of nature, most of it's managed and not in natural state. You can see this when on an airplane. The forests looks plotted with different parts of the forest in different state of growth.
Where would you consider the most nutural area of Finland? Im guessing some of the more north areas will be pretty untouched, but the furthest I have ventured upwards upto now is lake Tahko.
@@englandtofinland Wilderness areas in Lapland are probably the most natural large areas. But there are many national parks. Clsoe to Pori there seems to be Lauhanvuori National park which seems rather nice (I haven't visited it).
Ah yes, and the finnish health care is a disaster!
I didnt's learn too much about the health care system yet, which part is so bad?
@@englandtofinland I could write an essay about this. More over the question would be, what is not bad in this health care system and I can't even answer you that. Medicine which is standard in other countries, do not exist. Some therapies and operations are not available in this country. Not enough doctors, not enough nurses. Most of the time you'll get rejected, even in an emergency. I heard baby's dying in this country, because they would need to get the whole family to Sweden, because the health care isn't enough. It takes often way too long to transport a patient to another country. If you want an appointment, it can take a year to see a doctor, and have to pay for it. I had last year an emergency, I called the emergency room in the hospital, they told me to take Burana (headache medication / low pain killer) for something that could have actually killed me. My boyfriend called the ambulance, which we again had to pay. I had to wait 3 month for the operation and I have/had a baby and a young child at home. I also have a chronically illness, but can't afford the medication, because it's so expensive here in Finland. I also have problems with walking, no one is looking into it. One person I know searches a doctor who takes her, her leg is now double the size with huge pain, all doctors reject her so far and basically all she can do is waiting for a miracle, like everyone who has some problems. Children with high fever, waiting in the emergency room for hours. Once Finland got the title of the worst health care system in Europe. I also had to listen, a few times, that the emergency room is only for Finns, from Acuta, but that's bullsh*t. If you have the money, definitely always go private, but it will cost you over 100€ for a few minutes. It just sucks
@@mizulightblue Get a real job and go to private doctor. Problem solved.
@@mizulightblue For heaven's sake. Move away from Finland, cuz things are so bad here.

Nice! What has been your highlight so far?
Let me know if you also watched some Jazz music!
Apparently we have been on a same gig and it was pretty good in my opinion. If you are living in Pori I would suggest that you try One For The Road pub, as it is one of the easiest places to make local friends and/or to meet international people. And it is a proper pub, not a place for exahange students to hang out. I noticed that someone already welcomed you to Pori and gave you some tips for videos. I would recommend to do one of the Juselius Mausoleum asap. I haven't seen any made of it and it is apparantly one of the few, if not the only, mausoleums in Nordic countries. Before the winter comes I guess you could visit Ruosniemen kalliot as well, because you get a good view over the city from there and you can swim as well. One more tip is to try Ojalan lihapiirakka at the market place. It's as local as it gets and quite good as well. Not a delicasy really, but a good dirty snack. Welcome to Pori! I hope you like it here.
wall to wall carpeting is seen only in hotels. Otherwise carpets are loose and most places have designated carpet beating areas and further away these carpet washing/drying stations.
What is the reason for that?
@@englandtofinland Historic I guess.
As was said in another comment, your pronunciation is really good.
I still have a long way to go, but it's steadily improving :)
Your pronunciation is better than a lot of youtubers who have been living in Finland for years.

Finns think of restaurant and take-out food as unhealthy so they don't eat it as much. I also imagine that many people do not really like spicy food.
That explains a lot, and it explains why Finns are in such good shape
Depends where you live. Those living in east or north like spicy food more than those living south, west or central part of Finland. One reason why I hated living in Seinäjoki and Tampere was that I could not find any actually spicy food. I'm originally from Savo where people love spicy food (especially kebab with hot red chili sauce) and now live in North Ostrobothnia. It's completely different food culture when it comes to spicy food.
