Autonomous Sensory Meridian Response (ASMR) is a naturally occurring phenomenon in which a person experiences a pleasant 'tingling sensation'. This sensation typically emerges at the crown of the head, travels down the spine, and moves into the limbs. Current research has compared this phenomenon to synesthesia; a condition in which two or more senses are paired together (e.g., touch and taste). This is plausible, as ASMR is typically triggered by auditory or visual stimuli such as whispering, tapping, or watching certain tasks completed precisely. The physiological mechanism(s) underlying ASMR remains unknown, therefore more research must be completed to understand potential causes and applications of this sensation.
