I always referred to Franz Klammer when I skied.
This was my first time watching the Winter Olympics that I can remember. I was nine years old at the time and this sparked my love of alpine skiing ever since! To make it even better my mum took me and my sister to Austria for the summer holidays in the same year and we visited Innsbruck and many of the Winter Olympics locations. I also spent my tenth birthday in Vienna! I've been a fan of the Austrian ski team ever since!
I remember watching this all those years ago and I still love seeing it now. Absolutely brilliant!

Sometimes an event is just willed into reality. I remember watching this race on tv. Somehow I just knew Klammer would win. I think the reality is Klammer KNEW he would win. Success requires great will !

@@raynic1173 Your theory is quite individual. What trigonometric function do you use in your calculations? I can see that it is neither a tangens nor a sinus. How do you calculate the 60-degree slope as a percentage?
Simply knowledge. First acknowledge that straight up equals 100 %. So then 100% = 90 degrees. Same thing as if you use radiants. Radiants I believe was created to have slopes in base 10. Which we know makes for easy math, although creating some confusion when converting from/to degrees. However, I think for converting you need to develop an algebraic equation. (And there's more than one way to get there). So if use a simple identifier p for percent and d for degrees. Example, We have 100p = 90d. So. 50 percent or 1/2 could be expressed as. 100p(1/2) = 90d(1/2). Or 100p/2 = 90d/2 So 50p = 45d. So that example is the what ever you do to one side of the equation you must do to the other to maintain equality. Another is the basics of understanding percentages. As one thing being apart of the whole. In this case the part is in the numerator and the whole is in the denominator. Solving the equation will give you percentages of anything. Also this is what "fractions" represent. When we write 2/3, we are saying 2 parts of 3. We can also ask what percent is 2 parts. So we divide 2 by 3 and we get 0.66 an then multiply by 100, which equals 66 percent. So to and answer you question what percent is 60 degrees. We can say (60 / 90) x 100 = ?p 66 = ?p. Another way to do it is to say... 60d is to 90d, as Xp is too 100p. Or 60/90 = X/100 (60/90) x 100 = X 66 = X So 60d = 66p. If you want to go the other way 33.3333p = ?d 33.3333p/100p = Xd/90d Or 33.3333/100 = X/90 (33.3333/100) x 90 = X .3333333 x 90 = X 29.99997 = X So 33.3333 percent (1/3) = 30 degrees.
@@raynic1173 100% = 90 degrees is not true. the percentage is the tangens of the angle, not the sine. so 100% equals 45°.

I was 12 when I watched this. Everyone had been talking about Klammer. When I saw Russi's run, he was so smooth (only one slight mistake in the mid section) and so fast. I thought how can you beat that. Then Klammer just took the hardest fastest lines, nearly losing it on several occasions. Always carrying as much speed as he could find through the corners. I think that I breathed out only twice during his run. I don't think that I have seen a better sporting performance.
Not even a ski fan but I gotta say Klammer's run was immortal. That's all that needs to be said. Oh then I watch Tyson vs Marvis Frazier boxing 20 second match. It's like the thrill of victory and the agony of defeat.
Die Hommage an die Fahrer aus den 1980er-Jahren ist schön. Aber irgendwie fehlt da die Fahrt von Didier Cuche aus dem Jahr 2011. Das war für mich die ultimative Bewältigung der Mausefalle. The homage to the riders from the 1980s is nice. But somehow Didier Cuche's ride from 2011 is missing. For me, that was the ultimate mastery of the "Mausefalle" (mousetrap).

Russi did a course correction on that last turn because he almost hit the gate - see 2:15. This decresed his speed. He also mentioned this shocking moment in a recent documentry about this race.

You couldn't even attempt to take that radical a line in that final turn unless you were in supreme physical condition. I remember Sport Illustrated explaining that the G forces on some of his lines were enough to knock the wind out of you or even make you go light headed u less you were in unbelievable shape. Klammer had a very strong lower base and a reputation as a strong finisher and that was the difference
In Bormio you can ski from the top (3011 m) to the base (1245 m)...almost 2 km of altitude, Amazing ❤️

I remember watching this live. Well as live as things were back then from halfway around the world. One of my favorite Olympic memories. Truly amazing.
How long were the Sochi 2014 Olympics Roza Hutor lake jumps? I believe about 70+ meters, maybe more.
Yes this was one of the most beautiful course I ve ever seen! Unfortunately never in World cup what a shame. Even when everything would be normal with russian situation they would not take that into calendar....

Yea that mountain in the background is called „Langkofel“ in German. Its Italian name is „Sassolungo“, in Ladin it‘s called „Saslonch“. Saslong (the downhill shown in the video) is named by this mountain (small difference in spelling between Saslong and Saslonch).
Derek - these aren't the KAMELBÜCKEL, but the KAMELBUCKEL. That's still plural and does not need an 'ü' (nore the 's' at the end). Ein Kamelbuckel, drei Kamelbuckel. :)
