Plying yarn with an e-spinner.
This is how I ply singles into yarn with an e-spinner.
0:00 - Plying two singles with my e-spinner. Singles were spun on my Majacraft Aura.
3:19 - Winding a center pull ball of yarn.
6:15 - Plying 2 plys with a center pull ball of yarn. A great way to empty your bobbin.
10:30 - Finished yarn.
I love this Lazy Kate (bobbin holder) that I use in this video because the pins are small enought to fit into all my bobbins. Some e-spinner bobbins have a very small hole and they can be too tall for some lazy kates. These pins work very well and I can also add light tension to keep them from spinning back on themselves.
My lazy kate is called the "Not so Lazy Kate" and I couldn't find it online. I did find a similar lazy kate at Paradise fibers that has tall narrow pins.

How I spin Merino wool. The fiber in the video is ultra fine merino, probably around 20 micron count. I say spin when I mean twist, I say handspun when I mean hand dyed. Sheesh. I hadnt used my wheel in many years, decided to get it out, dust it off and being so long i decided to watch your video, which was so go od, and it all came back, except for plying together. Ill do a few bobbins first, then worry about the plying, so hope you have this segment, with many thanks Joan

    Do your fingers ever get sore or cramped? Are there ways of protecting against it if they do? Thanks for this. I like your channel. Liked and subbed.

    Thanks for this tutorial! I just got my “big girl” spinning wheel (like delivered last night!) and I’m making the transition from an Ewheel to the full size one. I am very much a beginner spinner and I liked to see everything clearly explained and demonstrated. I always learn something from each tutorial I watch. ❤

    Hello Very nice explained but don’t understand the tention. How can the yarn get on the bobbin when it’s rolling the same direction. I have just started, but it’s not working 😮I have got an old wheel from my husbands great grandmother. Sophia

    • @basementfibers
      @basementfibers 6 หลายเดือนก่อน

      The flyer of a spinning wheel winds yarn onto the bobbin because the flyer and the bobbin rotate at different speeds. Older wheels can be tricky when you are just starting. I found getting the yarn to pull on the bobbin to be very difficult at first. I was adding too much tension. Good luck!

    • @fia7687
      @fia7687 6 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Thank you so much. Ok different speed but the same direction. 👍 I will try again with the way you described with the cotton yarn. Thanks from a Swede living in Belgium. 😊

      It also depends on the type of wheel. Scotch tension is what I use in the video and adjusting the brake is what changes the draw-in. I'm not the best at all the terms. If you google the type of tension your wheel has you will get better terminology. 😁 Enjoy spinning.

    • @basementfibers

      This spinning wheel is a Schacht Matchless and it has Scotch or double drive as tensions. I am using Scotch tension in the video.

      @@basementfibers thanks for the reply! I own a Lendrum DT which is my first wheel and I love it ! But I am considering getting a Matchless, so doing my research in regards to anything that I can think of … For example my Lendrum has a separate Lendrum Jumbo Ply Head Kit, and I was wondering if the Matchless had something similar… but so far I learned that people use the regular flyer with either scotch or Irish tension and some use DD and some opt to buy the jumbo accessories which IMO it’s pricey….

    • @basementfibers
      @basementfibers 6 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@jplr0220 There is a Bulky Plyer Flyer for the Matchless but I have not used it. I often use an e-spinner to ply my yarn. I was showing how to use the Matchless to ply in this video since most people start with one wheel. The e-spinners have large bobbins which I really like for plying. I recently made a video showing how I use my e-spinner to ply, so maybe look at that if you are interested. Have fun with your research and spinning! 😁

    I usually spin from washed fleece that is combed or carded. Commercial roving is or has been pressed tightly together which causes some sticking. Dividing the roving into slivers and doing a little pre-drafting is usually helpful for consistency. I used my Ashford Traditional (single drive, scotch tension) since the early '80's and now I do a lot worsted for weaving and socks so I use my Haldane Orkney for spinning and ply on my Ashford.

    Your videos are great ! I feel like I’m having a bit of success. A trick I learned if your fibre is very compacted and you want to loosen it up, steam it. I was amazed at how effective it was on a dyed braid. Can’t wait for another instruction ! Your yarns are beautiful !!! 😊

      I found that out too! I’ve only started spinning recently and bought myself an EEW Nano2 because my tiny home matches my tiny budget. Whether spinning with a supported spindle or with my little EEW, and I spin very fine yarn… which isn’t the greatest when the fibre is compacted. A bit of steam works wonders!

    As I'm watching this I'm also spinning some pink wool from bansheefiberarts lol. I love buying from her because she is semi-local to me. The stuff you said about merino being dense and sticks to itself and can be hard to draft, I'm finding this to be even more true for rambouillet. This is the is the first rambouillet i've spun and i'm not sure i like it for those reasons
