The January 1966, military coup in Nigeria was one of the most brutal events that ever occurred in the country.
The coup was carried out in the cities of Kaduna, Ibadan and Lagos within a two-day timespan.
Major Kaduna Nzeogwu was said to have been the mastermind behind the coup with the support of other army majors.
The coup led to the killings of 22 people, including the Prime minister of Nigeria, many senior politicians, senior army officers and their wives.
Major General Aguiyi Ironsi, who was one of the surviving officers, managed to put down the coup in Lagos and arrested the coup plotters.
