This is arguably the best ww2 movie ever made
Great in depth analysis
There are certain aspects of the film which seem unnaturally cheesy or sentimental, but I'd take cheesy and sentimental any day compared to the awful depiction of men that Hollywood produces today. They lack courage, strength and determination, which these characters all have in spades. I just watched a remake of a Danish horror movie called Speak No Evil and the husband character is the weakest, most useless male ever to grace the screen. Men like this are everywhere in Hollywood movies these days.
Payne has a real sense of … just life, I guess…. He’s very tender, poignant, caring, and he’s barometer of good/bad taste is as precise as you can get. So few directors are like that nowadays.
I just stumbled upon Election (1999), and was just thoroughly reigned in by it's dark satire. Interesting to learn a bit more about the director. I'll have to check out some of his other movies.
There is occasional humor in this movie because it's realistic, and there is humor in real life even in extreme and tragic situations
Paul Brickhill also wrote "The Dambusters", & " Reach for the Sky"
👏 BRAV-OOOOO 😮 Wonderfully perceptive, profoundly moving and as unforgettable as the classic it so honorably 🎖 honors 👏
the great escape was one of the first dvd's i've got in my personal collection when i was 14. it was a christmas gift from my father in 2003. i remember watching it with my old man as he was telling me memories of his own personal childhood when he watched it. it's a personal film for me, as it was my introduction to old films and also my approach to those titans (specifically Steve Mcqueen) from that era. it was almost like the expendables of that era. this movie ill always have a special place in my memories and in my heart. indeed, you can watch this film and have a different viewpoint every time you watch it. thank you for your output on this film!
Wow! There is A LOT of nudity here. Was expecting a little more covering up, but still fairly good and thorough summary of one of the best comedy durectors out there. Be interesting to see if you make a follow up video since The Holdovers is getting masstive attention.
The "Chicken Incident" is the only part of the movie I can bear to watch repeatedly because it is so absurd. Worse, Spielberg did not create it as a set piece to inject humour, the "Chicken Incident" actually happened and Goethe really did find it funny.
Great video diminished by obtrusive music.
I saw this movie in my country INDIA when I was studying in 10 th standard. After 45 years today I am seeing its video clips.Such a wonderful movie and one of my favourite movie.
6:08 It's important to keep in mind Amon Göth's simplicity as a contrast to Oskar's complexity. In the film, the former was reportedly made tamer than the actual person b/c he was so monstrous in real life that his existence came off as almost unbelievable. The modern trend in writing villains is to make their motivations understandable. You'll hear lots of film enthusiasts preach that making a one-dimensional antagonist who's just evil for the sake of evil and only cares for money is the wrong way to go. It's almost as if the film is trying to give Amon a character arc regarding power & attraction, as well as attempting to provide answers on why he is the way he is. Only for him to reject that exploration and immediately go back to the pleasure of violence. A reminder that monsters do exist in real life no matter if they're human.
The changes in tonality are actually reminiscent of another POW escape movie, the 1937 French classic La grande illusion. It also starts with a very light, comedic tone, but becomes darker, more melancholic, as the film progresses.
Dr. Steven He Ph.D. Science of FAILURE!!! and EMOTIONAL DAMAGE!!!
Imagine partying with this dude in peacetime...
It's this just right amount of light heartedness is why I been able to watch Schindler's list multiple times and enjoy it in comparison to 12 years a slave that I have only scene once
The comedic moments balance so well with the darkness of the whole film, absolutely insane movie that rocked my world and I will forever remember my first viewing and my last.
*1098 not 1200
Mrs H 🇬🇧 ..... Love Liam Neilson....He did the roll of Oskar Schindler perfectly...!
It breaks 💔 the heart when he felt he could have done more. Liam plays the role so well
Great essay!
I defo wanted to see this film differently after all these years and multiple viewings and that memorable score . Some scenes seem a little bit trivial and the clash of acting styles but I always found the ending and the ultimate goal of escape moving and effective .
Just a little bit of added information. That alleged quote by Kubrick was taken out of Fredric Raphael's (co-writer of Eyes Wide Shut) memoir about Kubrick "Eyes Wide Open". Spielberg read it and was obviously in disbelief, saying he could not hear Kubrick's voice in that piece; Kubrick was one of his greatest mentors and always had very lengthy discussions with Stanley before he took on any project. Kubrick's wife, Christiane denounced "Eyes Wide Open" as a very unreliable biography. So take that quote with a grain of salt. And obviously, Schindler's List is a move made from the book, "Schindler's Ark". So it's not a movie about the Holocaust, it's movie about 1 little story out of the Holocaust. Some of the other snide comments seem to come from a place of jealousy. Many directors looked down on Spielberg as a guy who made "light" kid-friendly movies - Not believing he could make an artistic "heavy" movie.
Comedy = the protagonist succeeds in his quest Tragedy = the protagonist fails in his quest "Schindler"s List" = inside the great tragedy, a comedy.
I beg to pardon, but I find very little comedy in Schindler's List. I found it surreal.
Racists at an extreme level
Way too few subscribers for this fantastic content.
Please make more videos, this was an amazing review.
It's got its moments of levity indeed.
if this was remade. simon pegg should definitely play Big X. they look very similar

"Underrated"? Every single male human I know thinks it's one of best movies ever made.
I mean I hated it
What would a bihari know
Biggest problem with the film there was Americans
Meh. There were just three. So two more than real life. It's not a huge deal and in real life the Americans did help with the escape but we're transfered before the escape attempt, except one American who fought in the British army.
The problem was they took too much away from what the Allies nations did before.
This film belongs in the top 100 films of all time. Easily
Even though I was born in 90s. This movie is still my all time fave movie. I fucking LOVE this movie.
No need for foul language.
@@RobDavisTelford lol, you should grow up. There's nothing offensive about what he said.
You missed the best part of the scene where Schindler saves Stern at the train station. Itzak Stern apologizes for his stupidity in forgetting his identity card and thus causing him to be sent on to the train. Schindler in apparent agreement with the seriousness of the situation, points out "What if I got here five minutes later?" Then the nest sentence, "Then where would I be?" That line gets me every time. It is amazing how Spielberg can inject humor into a subject as serious as the Holocaust.
What do line " where would i be? " mean? I am not fluent English so I have difficulty in understanding .I dont know why Sir Oscar said those words.
@@ngocthaodrawing Okay, I will try to explain to a non-native speaker. Stern is almost sent away on a train to possibly face death in an extermination camp. Up until now, he successfully ran Oscar Schindler's business. He was very helpful to Schindler. Now he is loaded on to a train to face death at the hands of the Nazis. So you get the set up of the situation. Schindler shows up just in time. He manages to bully the officials on the scene in to stopping the train and allowing Stern off. It is a big relief to Stern. Stern admits that it was caused by his own carelessness in neglecting to have the proper papers in order. Then the punch line: Schindler says "What if I got here five minutes later?" Obviously we the audience are expecting him to note the sad fate that would await Stern in such an event. But noting that Stern ran his business and made him wealthy Schindler instead finishes with "Then where would I be!" LOL. You can see the irony now. Great injection of humor into a serious situation. Hope I cleared it up. Peace.
@@johnratican3824 yes it is clear now. I especially like the later part of your explanation on 'where would I be' . Your full reply helped me understand this scene in movie. I guess, instead of saying " where would you be?" , Schindler said " where would I be"? And that created irony and deep message in this scene about Schindler ' s pure heart. Thank you John for your kind reply.
@@ngocthaodrawing You are most welcome!
. Well done, Lad .
7:10 I was very surprised to hear Radiohead suddenly xD
Happy 1k
🙂
ditto Kubrick's Dr Strangelove, comedy in nuclear annihilation.
I don't get the criticism of this film. Just shows that some people somewhere in the world will have a problem with everything.
The ONLY thing I could think to criticize is the length. Maybe some people don’t like that it’s black and white. Other than that I don’t see what problems anyone would have with it
I saw Schindler’s List exactly once, in 93 in the theater. The comedy is what struck me the most, and stuck with me. Back in my day we learned about the horrors of the Holocaust in school and on PBS. I was really surprised how much humor was in this movie- even in horrific scenes like when the Germans bungle an execution because the gun malfunctions. So much of this movie stays in my mind almost 3 decades later. It’s a masterpiece.
