Building a 6m Magnetic Loop Antenna in 60 Minutes
Ever wanted to build a magnetic loop antenna? Let me show you how I built my 6m magnetic loop in just 60 minutes with parts available from your local hardware store or found around the average ham shack. #hamradio #hamradioantenna #magneticloop #magloop

De-boxing Day #003 - WSPR Transmitter for comparing antennas
มุมมอง 89หลายเดือนก่อน
I've been told that opinions are like arseholes; everyone has them! And that's definitely the case when it comes to antennas for ham radio. So, to try and separate facts from opinions, I ordered two WSPR transmitters from ZachTec. The plan is to use these for side-by-side comparisons of a range of HF antennas, and to be able to make decisions based on empirical evidence instead of unsubstantiat...
Small, lightweight balun choke for QRP operations
มุมมอง 87หลายเดือนก่อน
(Excuse the mumbling in the last half of the video, I think I forgot I was talking to someone other then myself) I recently took delivery of the 6m carbon fibre mast from Sotabeams. Planning on getting together a extremely lightweight and compact kit for portable radio. Starting with a simple choke balun for QRP dipoles and verticals. Parts used in this build are: - T68-43 toroid - About 50cm o...

      That’s almost 20 kg of aluminium, so hopefully it’ll be enough for quite a few projects 😀

    Funny you have just published this as today I've just finished my 6m mag loop too... An offcut of elliptical waveguide rather than plumbing pipes. A coupling loop rather than the ferrite and a small butterfly rather than your co-ax inner. Just over a foot in diameter but just like you I'm very impressed with it's performance. Picking up Slovenia from inside the kitchen here in Scotland. Q is very high (showing good low losses) & certainly need to retune the capacitor depending on where in the band working. Totally agree with you that these little mag loops can be great fun to build & play around with & that they can provide amazing results in restricted circumstances.

      Nice work! Sounds like a piece of kit! Looking forward to further experiments with magnetic loops in the future. If have some pictures of your build (either "in progress" of finished product) feel free to share!

    I recently hiked mt Whitney which has a summit around 15k feet. When the snow melts I plan to go back but I’d like to make some contacts while I’m up there. What would be my best bet for gear? Some sort of dipole?

    • @LB5JJ
      @LB5JJ 5 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Weight is the key! You don't normally need much in the way of an antenna on a mountain top. If there's mobile phone coverage, I'd recommend spotting yourself - you'll have a pile-up in no time! Be careful and good luck with the activation!

    I used a stepper motor and an Arduino for my Mag Loop years ago. I ended up giving it to another ham though. I miss it now. 🥲Great Video. Thanks for sharing! 73 de W6OBB

      I actually prefer the scenery a tad more green, but yeah. I think my main gripe with snow mostly has to do with the melting point of water. Imagine how nice show would have been if water froze at 25°C! '

    Operation is smooth and short to allow a fine tune of the capacitor. Is there an inductor as one of the components of this tuner? 73

    • @LB5JJ
      @LB5JJ 9 หลายเดือนก่อน

      It's for a magnetic loop, so strictly I guess you could say the loop is the inductor. But other then that, no.

      Thanks! To be honest, most of the work went into writing the Arduino-code for the ESP8266. But save for a few choice words, that would probably be quite boring to watch! Looking forward to continuing the build!

    • @LB5JJ
      @LB5JJ 10 หลายเดือนก่อน

      The plan (or maybe I should say hope) is to make it into a remotely operated tuning device for magnetic loops, but make it connect/disconnect loops so I can use it for experimentation. The first loop I'm planning is a 10m to 20m loop made from insulated 12mm copper pipe... We'll see 🙂

  • @KS0JD
    @KS0JD 10 หลายเดือนก่อน

    With that much voltage you might want something non-conductive to turn it. It might also be good to have some type of position indicator so you know approximate value between uses. It will be an interesting project. 73

    • @LB5JJ
      @LB5JJ 10 หลายเดือนก่อน

      The current (no phun intended) plan is to use 2GT pulleys and belt to separate the actuator from the capacitor. The actuator should also drive a threaded rod so I have some way of activate limit switches and facilitate homing.
