In this video we have visually presented the various stages-from start to the very end of the finished product-of the preparation of our traditional shawl, called Sharrae, Patu, Patto, Pato or Sazar. These shawls are produced in different regions of Pakhtunkhwa and Afghanistan. But we have selected the place of production where it's reputation reaches the world stage. The place is located in the most scenic valley of Swat, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, Salampur village.
The making of shawl is a long, careful and vigorous task. All the process of the making is carried out with hands and feet. All the colours of them are natural as lamb's various colours.
The craftsmen first select lamb wool from particular mountainous regions to get the desired results. The undesirable pieces are then carefully separated. The same colour wool are then mixed and are ready for making threads for the shawl. The rest of the story you can watch in the video.
Here we have to tell you that most of the handwork is carried out by the females artisans but due to the cultural sensitivities we are unable to visualise them here however for the perfection sake the tasks are done by the male artisans.
Another point of importance to be noted that the process is very lengthy and take days for making a single shawl, for example it is washed four times at least for one hour in each stage. So we have just included a few shorts from each stage of washing.
