    I'm not super acquainted with subject matter, but I still really enjoy the series so far. I thinkI would benefit from some sort of "primer". I have no formal mathematical background. I am also curious: how much time does the completion of each segment take you? How much time does it take to solve any particular problem? How should one assess their proficiency and"speed"? In your previous video, you mentioned that you feel "slow" and as though you lack "creativity". For what reasons do you believe this? How might I determine whether or not my solutions are produced in a sufficiently creative and timely manner? Really enjoying this so far; Thanks!

    • @robsemicolon
      @robsemicolon 11 หลายเดือนก่อน

      I’m glad you’re enjoying it! I’m definitely going to make some prep material for the next chapter and I’m thinking about making some for the current chapter, the one episodes 1 and 2 currently cover. The problem which took me the longest in this set so far was the one where a,b, and e are elements of an ordered field and a < b + e for every positive e. I spent a long time trying for a method that was never going to pan out and in the end I think it took 40 minutes. Usually problems take less than that, maybe 5 or less minutes for an easy problem and 5-15 for something I’ve actually gotta think about first. The two sets I’ve done so far have taken less than 2 hours each. I’ve been toying with the idea of adding a completion time to each problem so maybe I’ll implement that. I feel uncreative partly because analysis can sometimes require something very specific or original from you. There’s a class of problems I call “magic epsilon” problems, so named because I feel they’re similar to “magic line” problems in geometry. Something that looks so opaque suddenly becomes clear once you see the epsilon that makes it all work. Other than that I feel like the only trick in my bag is the triangle inequality which only takes you so far. I don’t know how one who isn’t me would judge their own timeliness or creativity. I think I lack in this subject because of the amount of time I’ve spent looking at a blank page in overleaf with no ideas for how to solve a homework problem in my analysis 2 class. I guess it depends on how fast you need to be for your circumstances. I hope my jumbled and unorganized response answered at least one of your questions. Thanks for watching and I hope you enjoy what’s to come

    That's awesome about the author giving the stamp of approval! I had a similar thing happen for my tensor calc series. Definitely will check out the series whenever I need to remember how to prove things. Are there particular sections you already know you want to emphasize?

    • @robsemicolon
      @robsemicolon 11 หลายเดือนก่อน

      The very next chapter is actually all about cardinality. Different types of infinity, finding bijections between infinite sets (or showing that there aren't any), stuff like that. None of that stuff was covered in any kind of detail in my analysis classes so I'm looking forward to digging into it. I may make some videos going through the chapter and not just show the exercises.
