As with each of the Rahkshi in their respective colors, Kurahk's head, capsule lid and feet are a metallicized version of white sometimes called "Pearl White". Even though pearl can be classified as its own color in itself. Though I didn't have this set, I did obtain the capsule lid in pearl white from a Bionicle "Parts tub" (6638) from 2006, while others of Kurahk's parts-such as the head, feet and spine fin appeared in other Parts tubs (8711, 8715 and 6620) I did not have. The end parts of Kurahk's "Staff of Anger" were also repurposed/reused for one of the Rahaga (4870) in 2005, as well as for projectiles in a minifigure-scale set (8759) from that year, before they were phased out.

At the time of their release, the Rahkshi were the first canister-size Bionicle sets to have articulated knees, and also set a new record for part count (45) for a set of that size. Just narrowly edging out Gali Nuva (8570) from the year before. Panrahk was the first of two Rahkshi that I obtained, though not until the early Spring of 2007, and was the only "standard" Bionicle set I had which contained some form of Mata brown. Each of the Rahkshi features a metallicized version of one of the Mata shades on their head, capsule lid and feet, and Panrahk features these in a shade sometimes called "Pearl brown". All of this set's parts appeared in certain production models of a Bionicle "Parts tub" (8715) released in 2005, and the head, spine fin and capsule lid appeared in a second one (6638) during 2006. Even though its label mislabeled it as the fin of a different Rahkshi and vice versa. This was also true for the hand sockets being in the regular non-metallicized version of Mata brown. The components of the Rahkshi's torsos would see varying degrees of usage in other sets after this, while the top section of it wasn't used after '03. The end parts of Panrahk's "Staff of Fragmentation" would also be repurposed as part of a Rahaga (4869) in 2005, and in two sets from 2006. With one of them (8624) being minifigure-scale, and the other (8733) being a Titan-size set.

Collectively, the Toa Nuva were the last canister-size Bionicle sets of protagonist characters to use the brighter "Mata shades" for nearly seven years, even as the color of "Mata green" in particular was entirely absent from the theme after 2003. Gali Nuva (8570) had the greatest number of parts out of the Toa Nuva (44), while Tahu Nuva (8572) had the fewest (36) overall, and Toa Mata style of feet were phased out in all but one of their origin colors after these. With only the white ones remaining in use for a few more years. Most of the Toa Nuva's weapons would go on to be reused/repurposed in other sets over the following years, though some-such as Kopaka Nuva's "Ice Blades" were not used in Bionicle after here.

As both of these models are non-canon, I myself didn't know they existed until TTV did an overview of all the 2003 alternate and combiner models on March 1 of 2020. This overview also featured an equally non-canon model using parts from these which was created by the Japanese company of Kabaya, which would cease its promotions with Lego as a whole after 2004.

At first I had thought you would do one of the waves of canister sets from 2003, given how this model is technically part of a Titan size set. But as for Jaller himself, he is the first of five sets to have Technic HTO 90-degree "V-beams" in yellow, though some of these appearances were rather far apart overall. As they have not appeared in that color since the Technic Batmobile (42127) from 2021. Though the Mata red Bohrok limbs first appeared in Tahnok-Kal (8574) from March 2003, they only appeared in one other standard set after the end of that year. This was also the first and only Bionicle set to have yellow hand socket joints, though they also came in a "Parts tub" (8713) from 2005 before being phased out entirely.

Hahli was one of two-technically three Matoran who debuted in set form during 2003, having not been released as a "diminished" (in the story) version two years earlier as several others were. She was also the first Bionicle set to use "earth blue" in her color scheme, as it was beginning to become more common after its initial introduction in the Technic R2-D2 figure (8009) the year before (even though this color technically debuted in a "Xalaxian" set from 2001). This color would later be described as "Metru blue", owing to its prevalence in sets of Water-associated characters and species during the "Metru Nui" arc of Bioinicle in 2004. But in terms of this set the Tohunga feet and the Technic HTO 90-degree "V-beams" in this color are exclusive, and the hand sockets in this color would go on to appear in six other sets over the following years. In conjunction, every piece on her in medium blue makes its final standard appearance here. Even though the Bohrok limbs in that color also appeared in the first Bionicle "Parts tub" (8711) in 2004 and a second of these (8713) in '05 before they were phased out completely. This was also true for the transparent blue Kanohi Kaukau as well. The Kolhii stick and puck would also be included in two Titan-sized sets (8594 and 8595) in 2003, but were not used again beyond that year.

Even in her "rebuilt" (in the story) form, Macku remains the only one of the 2003 Matoran to have the same color scheme as her respective Toa Nuva. Even though no Onu-Matoran or Le-Matoran were released in their rebuilt form as sets to compare with such. Macku's rebuilt form is one of only two sets to have the Technic HTO 90-degree "V-beams" in Mata blue, though the other appearance is technically part of a "Titan-sized" set (8595) released later in 2003. She is also among the first Bionicle sets to have socket joints in "medium blue", having first appeared as part of one of the earlier "Slizers" (8501) from 1999. Her rebuilt form is also the last "standard" set to have a noble Kanohi Huna in any color, even though it would make one final appearance in Mata blue in the first Bionicle "Parts tub" (8711) from 2004. It would also make a final appearance in orange in another of these locations (8713) in 2005 before the mask was phased out entirely.

This character's name is actually the Maori language word for "chilly" or "cold". In the story, Kopeke started out with a noble Kanohi Komau (Turaga Onewa's mask) in medium blue. At some point after being "rebuilt", It was damaged during a Kolhii practice leading him to replace it with a dark gray Kanohi Matatu in honor of Turaga Nuju. It is fascinating how Kopeke was released as set at all, considering how he doesn't appear in "Mask of Light", but doesn't speak at all in the second Mata Nui Online Game from that year. He is the only standard set to have the Technic HTO 90-degree "v-beams" in the old dark gray and the last to have the Tohunga style of feet in that color. Having debuted in Nuparu (in 8556) the year before. Kopeke is also the last standard set to have hand sockets in that color, though they first appeared in the Technic Star Wars Darth Vader figure (8010) at the start of 2002. They also appeared in the "Exo-Toa" (8557) and the Bahrag Queens (8558) between then, and also came in two Bionicle "Parts tubs" (8711 and 8713) in 2004 and '05 before being phased out. Kopeke's noble Kanohi Matatu in the old dark gray could previously only be obtained as an alternate mask for Turaga Whenua (8545) through the random Kanohi polybags (8525/8530) released during 2001 before appearing here, but also came in both of the aforementioned Parts tubs (8711 and 8713) before the mask was phased out all together. This set and Matoro's rebuilt form (8582) were the last to have Bohrok limbs and the lower HTO torso in white, with only the upper part remaining in use. If only for two more years...

  • @colinroberts2060

It is somewhat curious how the release of the Ko-Koro Kolhii team members as sets happened to coincide with the runup to the release of "Bionicle: Mask of Light", given that Matoro and Kopeke (8581) don't appear in the film at all. Matoro is the first set to have hand sockets in sand blue, and the last to have the Tohunga feet in that color. The sockets in sand blue also appeared in a Star Wars set (7255) in 2005, before returning to Bionicle for two final appearances in 2006. Between then, the Technic 90-degree "V-beams" in that color also appeared in the first Bionicle "Parts tub" (8711) in 2004 before phased out. Matoro's Kanohi Akaku in that color also appeared there and in a second Parts tub (8713) before the mask was phased out completely. Though the white Bohrok limbs first appeared in Kohrak-Kal (8575), this was the only color of the upper Matoran torso to be used after 2003.

This was an interesting surprise, considering how the "Fright Knights" faction of "Castle" seems to be covered fairly rarely in recent memory. Even though the theme is actually the same age as me. Fright Knights was the first theme to include wizard/witch hats, and also to include upper crocodile jaws and dragons in black. This particular set is also the only set to have the 3x3x6 "corner walls" in the old dark gray, and one of two sets to have the 3x6x6 double arch walls in that color. This is also the only set to have the 6x8 trap door frame in the old light gray, and one of the last sets to have the 1x12x3 arch in that color. With its final appearance being in a Harry Potter set (4712) released in early 2002. This and another set (6099) were the first to have the 1x5x4 inverted arch bricks in Mata red, which appeared in eight other sets until being phased out in 2018. This was also the last unique set to have the 45-degree inverted double slope brick in that color, apart from a re-release of a Western set (6763) in 2002.

As with Hewkii, and three of the other "Kolhii Matoran", this is the second set release of Hafu, having first appeared in his "diminished" (in the story) form as part of the "Power Pack" set (8546) in 2001. This set marks the final "standard" appearance of the torso components hand sockets and Bohrok limbs in tan, even though these also came between three Bionicle "Parts tubs" (8711, 8713, and 6620) between 2004 and 2006 before being phased out. This goes for his black noble Kanohi Ruru as well, though the Tohunga style of feet were not seen again in black after this set. In conjunction, the Technic 90-degree "V-beams" would become the most common in black and continue to be used over twenty years later.

Though this wave of Matoran-size sets did not have an official name at first, many fans have retroactively adopted the name "Kohliitoran", in reference to the sticks they each carry. In the story, the events of "Naming Day" resulted in several characters having their names, with "Huki" being changed to "Hewkii" as he was known from then on. The Matoran were also "rebuilt" into stronger forms to more-closely resemble the forms they had while on Metru Nui, though this was done by using limbs from decommissioned Bohrok, hence why they are Bohrok limbs as the Matoran's arms in each of these sets. In the case of Hewkii, he is one of the only Bionicle sets to use tan hand sockets, being that they had first appeared in one of the earlier "Slizers" (8506) from 1999. In conjunction, Hewkii is also the first set to feature hand sockets in dark orange (also called "burnt orange") and the last regular set to feature Tohunga feet in that color. These as well as his Kanohi Kakama in that color also appeared in a "Parts tub" (8713) from 2005 before being phased out. This wave of Matoran also introduce a Technic 90-degree "V-beam", with the dark orange ones on Hewkii being exclusive, though this part as a whole is still in use by Lego to this day.

Out of this wave, Kohrak Va (8551) and Lehvak Va (8552) have the greatest number of parts (28) comprising them. But even as the Tohunga style of feet on four of the six in white, Mata red, Mata green and Mata brown are borderline exclusive to their respective sets, them existing in set form allows for the creation of a fair number of Matoran who were never released as official sets. Provided that one can find their other parts in the correct colors.

  • @colinroberts2060
    @colinroberts2060 3 หลายเดือนก่อน

Akamai Nuva's model uses a total of 89 pieces from its three composite sets. Which is ten parts fewer than what was found in the prior combiner combining their original forms (8531, 8532 and 8534) from 2001, though this could be attributed to how this model doesn't use two of the composite sets' heads and eye stocks as part of a weapon like before. But it does use black "Voodoo balls" (not used in the composite figures, despite coming in all three sets) on the back of the model's function gears. As such, Akamai Nuva's limbs are slightly more complex being that they have regular hand sockets holding the "Magma Swords" from Tahu Nuva (8572) and the "Kodan Ball" formed from the "Climbing Claws" from Pohatu's Nuva form (8568). When TTV did an overview of all of the 2002 alternate and combiner models in February 2020, the narrator questioned as to why Akamai Nuva was the taller of the two Toa Kaita Nuva, in spite of how two of the three composite figures involved are the shortest of the team overall. But even though he is considered "canon", Akamai Nuva was never actually seen formed in the story, as his prior Mata form was the year before. Which is slightly fascinating considering how the majority of the parts comprising this model's composite figures were phased out after 2002, with only the Mata red hand sockets, Toa Mata/Nuva style heads, the black hand sockets, silver Toa Nuva chest and shoulder armor, and the "Climbing Claws" remaining.

In set form, Wairuha Nuva is comprised of 86 pieces. Three parts fewer than the previous year's version comprised of Gali, Lewa and Kopaka's Mata forms (8533, 8535 and 8536), even though two of the three component sets have more pieces than the sets of their prior incarnations. This model features ankle articulation by lieu of black "Voodoo balls" in its feet-which come with four of the Toa Nuva, despite the fact they actually aren't used at all in the construction of those composite figures. When TTV released an overview of all of the 2002 alternate and combiner models in February 2020, it was questioned as to why Wairuha Nuva is "short and stocky" when he doesn't encompass any of the shorter Toa Nuva.

Even as Tahu Nuva was featured the most prominently-often being in the center of promotional artwork involving group photos of the team, it is curious how he is numerically last in set form, as one of the last Bionicle sets released in 2002. As a set, Tahu Nuva has the fewest pieces (36) out of the entire team of Toa Nuva. Mainly because he doesn't have Technic 3M "Knob axles" and half-bushings on his feet like what the Nuva forms of Onua (8566), Gali (8570) and Kopaka (8571) have, but he still has more parts than what his prior Mata form (8534) had. Upon transformation, Tahu's "Fire Sword" was replaced by a pair of silver "Magma Swords," which can be combined (in set form, attached to the sides of his right foot) to create a large lava surfboard. Which is also more comparable to a real-world surfboard or a land-based "Longboard" sometimes used in skateboarding scenarios. The Magma Swords are the rarest of the Toa Nuva's weapons, though I would obtain them from a promotional alarm clock from 2003, as their only other appearance. This was also how I obtained the Kanohi Hau Nuva and the Toa Mata/Nuva eye stock in transparent neon red. The Hau Nuva could be obtained in the other five colors of the Toa Nuva through the random Kanohi polybags (8597/8598 depending on region) during 2002. It would've had the same rarity as the Kaukau Nuva from Gali's Nuva form (8570), if not for the fact that it came in a version depicting its "poisoned" state as part of a promotional set in the third quarter of 2003. Of note, Tahu Nuva would have been the last appearance of the eye stock in neon red, though it also came in a polybag re-release of Turaga Vakama (1417-2) in 2003 as part of the runup to the release of "Bionicle: Mask of Light" in mid-September of that year. This part in transparent neon red made one last appearance in the first Bionicle "Parts tub" (8711) released in 2004 before being phased out completely. Even as some other colors of this part were introduced in three of the Metru Nui Matoran (8610-8612) at the start of that year, only the transparent fluorescent orange (neon orange) ones remained after '04. As was true for the Toa Nuva limbs in tan and the old light and dark grays on the Nuva forms of Pohatu (8568), Onua (8566) and Kopaka (8571) respectively, Tahu Nuva was the only set to have this part in orange, and was the last to have the "Voodoo legs" comprising his arms in that color. He was also the final set to have the Toa Mata/Nuva style of torso (Voodoo torso) and feet (Voodoo feet) in Mata red, with the only the hand sockets in that color remaining.

In set form, Gali is comprised out of the greatest number of parts (44) out of the entire Toa Nuva team, after having the median amount of the team (35) in her prior form (8535). This is such, not only because of the Technic "stop axles" and half bushings on her feet, but also because she has two additional pin axles in the old light gray, and is the first set to have minifigure-scale propellers recolored in silver. Making her the only Bionicle set to use this part at all. Of note, this style of propeller first appeared in yellow in 1992 as part of a Technic "Supply Ship" (8839), and was in use for seven years. Between then, it also appeared in transparent flourescent reddish-orange (also called neon-orange) and transparent green in sets from the "Aquazone" theme between 1995 and '98, as well as in Mata red in the "Divers" subtheme of "Town" (Today know as "City") within that time. Upon transformation, Gali's Hooks were transformed into a pair of "Aqua Axes", which hold the title of the second-rarest of the Toa Nuva's Weapons. Only making one other appearance as part of a Toa Hagah (8763) from 2005. Gali is the only member of the Toa Nuva to use the same style of limbs for both her arms and her legs, and as with the lime green ones from Lewa Nuva (8567), they would have been exclusive to her in medium blue. Had they not also appeared in a Bionicle "Parts tub" (8713) from 2005. Gali's Kanohi Kaukau Nuva could be obtained in the other five colors of the Toa Nuva through the random Kanohi polybags released during mid-late 2002 (8597/8598), but was one of two Kanohi Nuva to not appear in a "Parts tub" as four of the others did. She is also the final set of a Water-associated character to have the Toa Mata/Nuva style of eye stock in transparent yellow, though she isn't the last set to feature that color or part in general. Gali Nuva marks the final appearance of the Toa Mata/Nuva torso (Voodoo torso) and feet (Voodoo feet) in Mata blue, leaving only the hand sockets in that color remaining after 2002.

In set form, Lewa Nuva has the smallest part discrepancy (37) from his Mata form (8535)-which had one part fewer, out of the entire team. Upon transformation, Lewa's Axe was replaced by a pair of "Air Katanas"-which while they didn't appear in as many colors as the "Climbing Claws" introduced with Pohatu's Nuva form (8568), they would go on to appear in the greatest number of sets out of the Toa Nuva's weapons, making nineteen other appearances over the following six years. All but one of these would be in their standard/origin color of silver, but four of this part would appear recolored in "dark orange" (also called "burnt orange") as part of a Titan-size set (8594) released in mid-2003. At that time, two of them in silver appeared in the first version of the Star Wars "Hailfire Droid" (4481) and in a Technic "Aircraft" (8434)) released in August 2004. But every other appearance of them after that were only in Bionicle. The style of limbs introduced with the Toa Nuva in lime green comprising Lewa Nuva's legs would also appear in a Bionicle "Parts tub" (8713) in 2005, and his arms marked the final appearance of the "Voodoo legs" in that color. He is also the final Bionicle set of a protagonist character to feature Mata green, and marks the final appearance of the Toa Mata/Nuva style of torso and feet in that color, with only the hand sockets remaining in use. Lewa's Kanohi Miru Nuva is possibly the least similar to its prior form out of all of the Kanohi Nuva masks, and could be obtained in the other five Toa's colors through the random Kanohi polybags (8597/8598) during 2002, and could also be obtained in silver through the first Bionicle Parts tub (8711) from 2004 before it was phased out. Lewa Nuva was also the largest set to have the Toa Mata style of eye stock in transparent fluorescent green (also called "neon green"), and it would make one last appearance in a Metru Nui Matoran (8607) at the start of 2004 before it was phased out in that color.

Cumulatively, the original Toa Mata contain 216 parts between all six of them. With Onua (8532) having the fewest (30), and Pohatu (8531) having the most (49) overall. For most of the first five years of Bionicle, no canister-size set would have greater than 50 pieces in its construction, even though Pohatu's total would be tied with one of the Toa Metru (8603) released in early Spring of 2004. But it wouldn't be until May or June of 2005 that this record would be broken by two other Bionicle sets released coinciding with the 50th anniversary of the Lego system (even though the actual Lego brick didn't turn 50 until 2008). But going back to the Toa Mata, most of their weapons would subsequently be reused, repurposed or even recolored in later sets throughout the theme's run. With only Lewa's "Air Axe" remaining exclusive to his respective set (8535). Although less noticeable at first glance, part of why Onua and Pohatu are the shortest members of the team stems from how they feature axles going through a Technic 0-degree angle element in either tan or the old light gray. Instead of the 180-degree angle elements which would allow the head to connect at a higher position like the other four members have.

In set form, Onua Nuva is numerically first out of the Toa Nuva, after being numerically second (8532) as a Toa Mata. And he also has 25% more parts (41) than his prior form (30). This is not only because of the chest and shoulder armor shared by the Toa Nuva overall, but also because of the Technic 3M "Stud axles" and bushings on his feet. As a similar story to Kopaka Nuva (8571) and two other members of the team, Onua Nuva can attach his "Quake Breakers" to his feet using these to convert them into "tread skates" of sorts, for traversing underground. These weapons would have been exclusive to this set, but they also appeared recolored in medium stone gray in mid-2004 as part of a set (4743) from "Alpha Team: Mission Deep Freeze". They appeared a third and final time in their standard color of silver in a Bionicle "Parts Tub" (8713) in 2005 before being phased out completely. The limbs comprising his legs are exclusive to him in the old dark gray, and his arms mark the third and final appearance of the Bohrok limbs in that color. Onua's Kanohi Pakari Nuva is often contested to have changed the most from its Mata form, along with the Miru from Lewa's transformation (8567), and like the other Toa Nuva masks, could be obtained through random Kanohi polybags (8597/8598 depending on region) during mid/late-2002, though ones in Mata red and Mata brown (also called "Old brown" or "Earth orange") and even its default color of black in the first Bionicle "Parts tub" (8711) from 2004. Onua Nuva was the last appearance of the Toa Mata/Nuva style of torso (Voodoo torso) and feet (Voodoo feet) in black. Which is surreal in retrospect-considering how in North American markets, the former of these actually debuted as part of the Technic Stormtrooper figure (8008) from Star Wars in January 2001. Six months before the Toa Mata had released in that region. Between Onua's first two Toa forms, the feet in black also came in the Technic Jango Fett figure (8011) released in late-April 2002, in the run-up to the release of "Star Wars: Attack of the Clones" in mid-May of that year. Onua Nuva was also the largest set by number of parts to have the Toa Mata/Nuva eye stock (Voodoo eyes) in the darker shade of transparent green, which would later make one final appearance in one of the Metru Nui Matoran (8608) in early 2004 before being phased out. In addition, Onua Nuva would be the final "standard" Bionicle set to feature the Technic 0-degree angle element in the old light gray, though it would continue to appear in other Lego themes between late-2002 and throughout 2003, such as a set (4850) based on the first "Maguire arc" Spider Man film (2002), and two sets (7469 and 7471) from the short-lived "Discovery Channel" theme from July 2003. It would make one final appearance in another Bionicle "Parts tub" (6620) in May 2006 before being phased out completely.

Kopaka is one of four members of the Toa Nuva whose set has more parts than that of its prior Mata form, and also has the second-highest number of parts (42) of the team overall. Upon his transformation, Kopaka's Ice Sword was transformed into a longer-but still generically-named "Ice Blade". But in spite of that, this weapon can be split in half and converted to a cross between snow skis and ice skates when attached to his feet, via the Technic 3M "knob axles" and bushings included in this set. The parts comprising Kopaka Nuva's Ice Blade would later appear recolored in sand blue as part of an "Alpha Team" set (4745), and recolored in medium stone gray in a slightly smaller set (4743) from that theme in June 2004. They would also appear in medium stone gray two years later as part of the largest set (7783) of the "Batman" theme (2006-08), and made one final appearance in silver in an "Agents" set (8631) in mid-2008 before being phased out. Kopaka Nuva also features a white 8x8 inverted radar dish as a shield, which was introduced in a set (10016) from the "Trains" theme in 2001. Kopaka's Kanohi Akaku Nuva could also be obtained in the other Toa Nuva's colors and in silver through random mask packs (8597/8598) during 2002, though one in Mata red and in Mata green would also appear in the first Bionicle "Parts tub" (8711) from 2004. He was also the last set of an Ice-associated character or species to have eyes in transparent medium blue, but wasn't the last set to feature that color overall. The style of limbs introduced with the Toa Nuva was exclusive to Kopaka Nuva in the old light gray, and he would be the last standard set to have the "Voodoo leg" and arms from his Toa Mata form (8536) in that color. But he was not the last set to have the Toa Mata/Nuva style of torso and feet in white, as the former made one final appearance in 2003, with the feet being used a few more times until '09.
