The Charleston is dance, a place and a tune; original written by James P.Johnson in 1923. The song and the dance has become a jazz classic and is as popular today as ever. This dance combines classic Charleston and early jazz moves to create a routine which capture the cheeky playful charm of this Twenties dance. Interesting bit of trivia: when this song came out (1938) it was banned by some radio stations as the (original) lyrics were considered too suggestive! (The Andrews Sisters' version sounds quite wholesome)

It's funny that we think of this dance as "old fashioned" and "classy" now because it was extremely risqué at the time. It was very much the twerking and grinding of the 1920s. People who danced like this, especially young women, were thought of as promiscuous and uncouth!

Obviously not called a helicopter Windmill!
Windmill or Cowtail is the traditional name for this move. We named it Helicopter years ago before we knew the correct term and we can’t break the habit! I guess that’s how things evolve through error 🤣
