Follow along as we begin the transition from being landlocked in Utah to exploring the Pacific Northwest and beyond aboard a Trawler. We've boated as a family all around the inland waters of Utah, Montana and Colorado, but we're ready to move on to exploration of the Pacific Northwest and beyond. There are a ton of things we'll need to learn as we open this next chapter of life, and we'll share it all with you as we go through the process.
EP128 - This reproduction tub has a problem and won't let me open the hood!
Our 1977 CJ-5 restoration project has had its share of ups and downs. In this episode, there's much fiddling around to get the hood to attach properly to the reproduction tub and open up like it's supposed to. I didn't think at this point in the project I'd be cutting and grinding to make things fit, but indeed, that's what is required.

EP127 - Windshield install was a major FAIL! And our hood won't open on our reproduction tub
มุมมอง 1613 หลายเดือนก่อน
I'm at the point in my CJ-5 restoration project where things are starting to go back together. In this video, I set out to put the windshield back into the windshield frame. I had no real idea how to install a CJ-5 windshield, and I'm not sure I still have any idea. And as many have mentioned, the reproduction tub has a slight problem that is keeping our hood from opening. But other than that, ...
CJ-5 - EP126 - We're putting the grill and the hood back in place!
มุมมอง 1514 หลายเดือนก่อน
Things are starting to come together, at least some of the major components that will make our 1977 CJ-5 project look like an actual Jeep again! In this episode, we're putting the grill back in place so we can set the hood back on. That's one less major part I have to move around the garage every time I move this thing!
CJ-5 - EP125 - Can we salvage this windshield washer motor or not?
มุมมอง 1094 หลายเดือนก่อน
Our attention this time around is mostly on the windshield wipers for our 1977 Jeep CJ-5 restoration project, and while it's not going overly fast, things are going pretty smoothly. We should be putting the windshield glass back in soon.
CJ-5 - EP124 - Windshield and wiper disassembly - can we save the windshield?
มุมมอง 3335 หลายเดือนก่อน
If you need to know how to remove the windshield wiper linkage on a CJ-5, this video might be what you need. We'll be removing the wiper arms, the wiper linkage and the wiper motor. When we've got all that out of the way, we're going to remove the windshield itself. Think we can do it without breaking the glass? Fingers crossed!
CJ-5 - EP123 - Many "hands" makes the job go much easier.
มุมมอง 1616 หลายเดือนก่อน
Turning back to our fender flares for the CJ-5 restomod project, I had to have more than just two hands to hold things in place. In fact, I needed more ways to hold things in place and more ways for my limbs to bend.
CJ-5 - EP122 - We got new fender flares but they don't fit too well
มุมมอง 1906 หลายเดือนก่อน
I ordered in a set of new fender flares for our CJ-5 Restomod project, and they arrived. In this episode, I'm unboxing them and doing a test fit. It's not going great! They seem to be not quite the right shape to fit easily into the opening and it looks like the mounting screws are going to be a head scratcher as well.
CJ-5 - EP121 - A little detail work is necessary to get the dash in...
มุมมอง 2438 หลายเดือนก่อน
The reproduction tub I bought to replace the old horrible rusty thing that was on this 1977 CJ-5 is not exactly perfect. There are a few holes that don't perfectly line up, and even a couple that are missing altogether. But overall, things are starting to shape up now as we start to put this thing back together.
CJ-5 - EP120 - Tailgate, dash, defroster, things are starting to go back in.
มุมมอง 1848 หลายเดือนก่อน
Some of the jobs required to reassemble our '77 Jeep CJ-5 restoration project go pretty easily, and take a reasonable amount of work. Others would work if my arm had three more joints in it. But we are on our way now, bolting this thing back together.
CJ-5 - EP119 - The paint job is finally done and it's time to reassemble this thing!
มุมมอง 2518 หลายเดือนก่อน
Amazingly enough, there is NO SANDING or polishing in this episode. That's right, the do-it-yourself garage paint job on our 1977 CJ-5 restoration project can officially be called complete. The shiny parts are now starting to go back into place and before long, this thing will really start looking like a complete jeep again.
CJ5 - EP118 - In which I strive for Zen in this paint job process...
มุมมอง 1479 หลายเดือนก่อน
Ok, you have to roll along with things at this point, right? I've been at this paint job so long the only thing left at this point is to try to find some spiritual peace with the process. Come on along and let's find the Zen in paint finishing.
CJ-5 - EP117 - Believe it or not, we are very nearly done with this paint job!
มุมมอง 15910 หลายเดือนก่อน
Ok, so if you've been following along, you know that painting my Jeep CJ-5 in my garage has been a bit of a challenge. But I feel like I'm finally turning the corner on this part of the restoration project.
CJ-5 - EP116 - Oh, just some more sanding on our new paint job...
มุมมอง 12910 หลายเดือนก่อน
I had literally no idea how many hours of sanding it would take to finish a do-it-yourself garage paint job as part of this CJ-5 restoration project. It seems like all I've done lately is burn through sheets of 1500 grit and 2000 grit sand paper. But, I do believe all the hard work is starting to pay off.
CJ-5 - EP115 - Finally I think we have a paint job we can live with
มุมมอง 19211 หลายเดือนก่อน
All the work is not complete, but so far, all signs are pointing towards success for this - our third - paint and clear coat application. There's still some wet sanding and polishing to do, but so far no major issues have presented themselves.

can you give an idea how to wire the 2 wires pressure switch on proportioning valve to brake system warning indicator?
in regards to why it's not going in, and then all of sudden it does, my hypothesis would be those needles in the bearing, if maybe you turn those ends, it happens to be at the same angle between two needles (gap) and that is all you need to sllp it in?
Hi, I followed your entire video. I was sitting at the edge of my chair, and I kinda like when it's not working out, knowing that it's going to happen to me as well, and that I am not alone facing these issues like you were having and what I would do in this situation. I gotta have mine replaced as well. and I was thinking of doing it under the car. Not sure if that is going to be possible. I also don't have that large C clamp puller type. First I need to order and we will see.
Would you say the cost for the tub is worth it from Willys Overland? Seems to be almost $2000 more than if ordered from say Quadratec? I know there are a good amount of holes to cut and play around with, but was just curious on your thoughts there. Thanks
You're being quite detailed with painting stuff and " painting what spot" you scuffed up. That's kinda the way I work as for the twin stick set up you have done the best have seen on you tube. On guy used map gas to Ben stuff and struggled be map gas Wil not heat stuff enough to re-shape metal. You did a much better install. I'm going to order a kit tomorrow.
So how did you tighten that new third bolt and nut that is inside the frame for the power steering box????
On those ball joints you take the C-clamp to where you have a bunch of tension on it and then smack it with a hammer on the side of the part that the ball joint goes in
the hood support rod goes into a bracket on the support rod from the fire wall
just use some of your left over paint to brush touch it up . ( the body paint)
When you really care about a project, the last 10% tends to be more frustrating than the first 90%; but when it's finished, you will probably agree it was worth the effort. IDK about you but I hate using a dremel to cut metal unless I have to. In my experience, they are slow cutting, wobbly, and don't last long before having to change cutting disks. If it were me, I would have used a "nibbler"(takes small bites out of the metal in quick succession) or body saw(small reciprocating air saw) on the sides, and a roloc angle grinder to remove material from the center.
I ended up trimming mine right across the whole cowl reducing it by half and flush at the radius's now it clears no problem.
You should bolt on the hood latch is so it can pull the hood down and help you align everything up
🙄😅👍👌💪
Uninstalling the windshield it is a lot easier if the windshield frame is bolted on the hinges to the body, install the windshield from the outside in and have somebody push on the windshield as you pull the rope around, you don't need to wrap the rope around the whole windshield just run it about a foot past the corners on the bottom and you can work it around to pull the gasket out. Definitely use some lubrication either Windex or soap detergent like two other people suggested
Your
I love. You jeep
Keep talking buddy I like you vids love them CJ I have a cj5 starting a rebuild like you started it but got Colin cancer had surgery now ready to go 1/2 year later buddy
check my comments back a ways i let you know about having to grind the cowl for the hood and about the windshield . but an extra hand would be great for the windshield install
did you use some dish soap and water in a spray bottle will help it slide in
Have Omix cj5 body as well and just bolted the whole front end together for test fitting and same thing hood hangs up on the cowl lip mostly on the ends , some time with a zip cut disc and finishing up with fine grinder and all good, luckily my body isn't painted yet so wasn't a big deal. Next time I'll travel far and wide find a original body these Omix oil cans are a pain.
Yup CJ windshields are a pain to put in. It does get easier if you had a second pair of hands 'though. Also, I noticed you were not using anything to lubricate the rope and seal, that makes things much harder. Generally I use a liberal amount of glass cleaner to help the gasket slip over the frame. You'll get it done. I have confidence in you. ;-)
Oh, I thought we did these projects *because* they pissed us off. Maybe I've been doing it wrong. :-P
😁💪👍
Thanks for watching!
Thank you so much for making this video! I watched hours of video on how to rebuild Dana 20 transfer cases. That only told me that everthing was in right. But it still wasn't in the right gear as I progressed through the shifts. I needed to know exactly where each gear should be in each position to figure out what was going on in my case. Turns out the new linkage I bought was too long and needed to be trimmed to make it work. Thank you, thank you, thank you! I thought I was going to have to buy a new case because i couldn't find any body to work on it.
So glad this was helpful!
Drill new holes and you can get Chrome button screws through and you could secure it with nuts
Yeah, that's most likely the route I'll take here.
you can get studs to weld on the back of the dash.
Mmm, don't really want to paint the dash again. Too late to weld on the thing...
i drilled new holes and tapped them and used the old nuts to get new screws. it does show on the front of the dash but i used a gauge cover and it covers the holes. it comes in black or chrome.
I'll most likely go with drilling holes for screws.
where is your vin. number mine was on the backing plate
It was on the firewall. The CJ-7 out in the resting place on the side of the house has it up on that wiper backing plate, but it wasn't there on the CJ-5.
The ring and contact is part of the "park" circuit. If you notice the small break in one of the traces on the back of the disc, that is how the motor knows where to stop when you turn the windshield wipers off. The "park" circuit isn't neseccary for the motor to run but if you shut the motor off( just cut power) the wipers will just stop wherever they are on the glass. With the "park" circuit, the motor continues to spin until it reaches the break in the citcuit on the disc, which should be set to coincide with the wipers being down and as out of the way as possible. Keep up the great work. I know you can do it.
I did wind up buying a new motor...
watching this is like watching paint dry
Sorry... This was an early video, hopefully they got better over time.
with the help of your video i finally was able to figure it my jeep.. thanks
Cool! Glad this video helped!
Epic video......I have two shifters in my 79 CJ5 but still not sure why.....or how to use them. This explains why I lock my hubs move one gear up and the wheels in front don't seem to be pulling
Yeah, twin sticks are a nice setup for those times when you need low range more than you need 4-wheel drive...
😁✌️👍
the two screws on top left and right are for sunvisors
Yeah, I knew that. Didn't mention it in the video. I think I actually have the visors around somewhere as well...
Nice job......as always.
Thanks! This one was a bit on the "nuisance" side of things.
😁👍👌💪
Thanks for watching
The fender flares are a little bit flexible if you put a clamp on each side of each hole you can pull the fender flare up and use a sharpie to Mark the tape
I managed ok with my little sawed off pencil...
Try using a MECHANICAL pencil : )
Ah, I see what you did there!
i used a air angle grinder they come with a 1/8 th collet that fits a 1/8 drill bit short and drilled my holes
You drilled your holes with the flare in place?
Ye
yes@@LandlockedNoMore
😁👍💪
You could probably make a hole template for the covers using double-sided tape and cardboard.
I wound up using some small "C" clamps.
Any updates?
Hello - yes, I've got a new video finally set to drop Monday morning. Thanks for sticking with me.
Wow this is looking like a nice CJ5 build! Got the V8 too!
Thanks! Yeah, I do love the V8. Hopefully it won't be too much longer before we hear that thing come to life.
I have a 77 CJ5 and I believe the clutch pin near the firewall broke back in 2018. A mechanic did an adjustment so I could continue driving it, which worked, till present. Now, it rattles and vibrates a lot when backing up. I took her in to a shop and was told I need a new clutch and they’d have to pull the transmission to replace it, which would take 10 to 12 hours of labor not to mention the time of putting in a new clutch! My question is do I need the new pin and rod you show in video or a new clutch? Any ideas?
Well, to begin, if you truly do need a new clutch, then yes, the transmission needs to come out to replace that. However, if the linkage is the issue, that's relatively easy to replace and does NOT require the transmission to come out.
@@LandlockedNoMore thank you!
did you end up keeping your dimmer switch on the floorboard or did you go with an additional switch wired up somewhere else? lol you didnt seem to excited about it in the video
Actually, I'm not far enough along yet to take care of the dimmer switch. Haven't really made the decision yet.
@LandlockedNoMore unstandable, enjoy the process ! I'm looking forward to ordering my painless harness here soon. My wires are so cobbled up and extended with different colored wires. It's very much needed in an overhaul.
Wiring is the bane of all old jeeps it seems like. They've all been hacked and slashed over the years, which - I suppose - is why Painless Wiring is in business.
I would bet the dip is on purpose to help with keeping you in the bed as the boat sways to and fro
Well, in most cases, you would put a lee cloth up to keep you in the bed when heeled over, but that said, a boat this small was probably built with little concern for actually sleeping much in it. Thanks for watching.
@@LandlockedNoMore my friend just got gifted a Santana 22 seemed like it will be a fun time. I intend to see all of your videos so I can help out with being a useful deck hand
Oh cool! They are fun and fast little boats! I'll bet you'll enjoy your time on one and they are pretty forgiving so an easy boat to learn on. When the sails are trimmed nicely, the thing basically sails itself.
could of turned bolts around an had nuts on side you would see ? of course you would want to use acorn nuts ! just a thought but great job so far sir
I'm thinking I'll look into those rivnuts... Someone else suggested those.
Good job, I just would have preloaded the dashboard up with all the gauges and whatever else there is, instead of having to reach underneath and hook it all up
Yeah, it's not all tightened down and someone mentioned that I should have installed some rivnuts. I like that idea so I'll definitely be looking into that so I can put the dash in and out as necessary. I'm also thinking about putting a GPS speedo in, so will need to get that ordered up.
I don't see your windshield washer nozzle.
Dang! You're right. I didn't miss that until now. I'll have to go rescue that out of the jeep graveyard and then most likely do some drilling...
😁👌✌️👍
Thanks for watching.
