Thank you for the video idea!
Youve made some pretty good conclusions man. Love the effort.
Mario music faintly in the background... airship music I think. Someone playing Super Mario Galaxy in the background?
I've been trying to add some very light music in during editing. I feel it helps the very quiet parts of the videos.
So, I know you said this is the final part. But are you sure the RF signal is coming over the power lines? I'd think the variac would have filtered most of that out. Either way, it would be interesting to see if you could still see the signal if you powered it through a simple RC low pass filter.
I am certain that it is RF being feed into the power lines. There is a comment that doesn't show up on in the TH-cam comments section but does show up in TH-cam studio. They state "Analysis of Compromising Video Disturbances through Power Line" is a research paper on this phenomenon. I looked into it and wished I found the paper as it describes the exact same situation. Also there is a part in the video were I test with and without the variac and it makes no noticeable effect on the signal. I hope this helps :)
@@cphVlwYa since it's high frequency, the RF can travel via the capacitance between the variac windings and other components. But I'm still not entirely sure since I think the monitor radiating RF and the TV picking it up via its antenna is a better and more likely explanation
What Linux distro are you using?
Ubuntu 24.04
Check "Analysis of Compromising Video Disturbances through Power Line" paper, they research exactly this phenomenon.
This looks to be exactly what is happening! Thank you. I did a bunch of research for this final video and didn't this paper but I sure wish I did.
That wide hump on the SDR is almost definitely your signal though! It's very wide bandwidth and significantly above the noise floor, so it could carry the NTSC data. Maybe you can somehow view the information contained in the signal by applying an analog broadcast TV demodulator (though the RTL-SDR may not have enough bandwidth sadly). Iirc analog TV broadcasts were just very high bandwidth AM transmissions (since it's AM, the peak you see could be real and not an artifact since it functions as a carrier (probably related to the video signal clock frequency if it is a real signal playing a role in transmission)) with a bandwidth of 6MHz to transmit all the video data. I still have no idea how a digital signal from HDMI/displayport is being converted and modulated to a format that the TV understands and demodulates to an NTSC signal. On an earlier video, I said that maybe it has to do with the monitor's internal circuitry converting the digital signal to an image on the panel where the EMI from addressing the pixels just happens to be similar to AM modulated NTSC.
The reason you hear a tone with DSB (or LSB/USB) is that the frequencies in the signal you receive are going to be shifted down in frequency with the center frequency at 0Hz. For example, you'll hear a 1kHz tone if your center frequency is at 500.000MHz and there's a peak at 500.001MHz (or 499.999MHz since DSB is symmetrical). Some SDRs have artifact peaks like that though that aren't real signals, and since that signal is very narrow and at a single frequency, it may not contain any useful information (if it's an artifact) so it may not be the signal that's causing the TV to display you monitor's output.
First! Hmm...
I know what this is. Have you seen the movie, "Poltergeist"? 😂
Neat find. Hopefully, it works a little better with headphones (many pocket radios use the headphone cord as an antenna). Be sure to remove those Leakacell batteries before too much longer! I’ve had Duracell AAs leak after only 8 months or less in use. That’s weird that some stations transmit mono music in stereo. FM radio is supposed to be getting more popular than AM, so I would have thought FM stations would make more effort to have more modernized equipment.
Ya FM station situation has been sort of weird. The station has been on a bit of a downturn as of recently. I timed it and they play 10 minutes of ads and then they play two songs with 30 seconds being cut either from the beginning or the end of the song as well as being slightly speed up. The most annoying part is they advertise the station as being "Wide FM stereo". I hope this doesn't happen to our AM stations as we only have 2 left. Also don't worry, already removed the batteries :)
@@8TrackTech Darn. But good on removing the batteries. Of course, they're usually fine for a simple testing video.
you should take an electronics class. this is pretty standard stuff...

Neat!
what desktop environment were you using on your linux machine? i really liked the taskbar! also what distro?
I use Ubuntu 24.04 but I moved the taskbar to the bottom. I think I also adjusted the size of the icons a bit. My pc itself has a blue and black theme so I use blue and black icons. Gnome based if I recall.
That poor computer
After installing Bonzi it was doing some weird things.( Like taking a minute to boot.)
@8TrackTech I'm sorry sir, but your PC needs to be put down.
you used windows not winows!
😂 all cuz of me
try lego island!
I'll add it to the list.
Internet Explorer still being in Windows 11 is peak Microsoft
isn't bonzi buddy a virus file ?
Sort of. It is spyware though windows 11 itself is also by definition spyware soooo.
It was a voice assistant around the turn of the century but secretly it ran spyware and adware. The services for it are long gone, but still I wouldn’t 100% trust it
I know a guy selling a bridge.
This, combined with the pc component vibration listening thing. They've literally got it all.

In the second grade a long time ago. I turned on my black and white dial TV in my bedroom with my brother and we were able to listen in on my moms telephone calls. It worked for a while until it eventually didn't or I never could set it up correctly again.
I read somewhere that tvs will attempt to display any analog signal its being fed...
Hitachi?? 🧐
I feel like this is forbidden info, as this has most likely already been discovered and exploited by certain government agencies awhile ago. Now please excuse me while i cover my entire room in tinfoil
very brry good video! :)

I hope you all enjoyed the video. It was a lot of fun to make.
so my neighbors can see me watching corn by using their 80s hitachi tv... I knew I wasn't hallucinating
The humming level in that room is very unhealthy. Fix that ASAP if you spend a lot of time in there.
So.....When Doom?
Was really windy that day you recorded?
Hitachi? Same brand as my grandma's massager 😊
can you watch shazam on it through another time dimension/blackhole?
Lets see nordvpn protect against this.
Your videos and the comments have given me a lot to think about.
Hi! I study electrical engineering. This phenomenon is called Van Eck Phreaking and I don't really remember it well so I'll just leave you to do some research on your own as I don't wanna spread misinformation

Very interesting! Thanks for the video mate. There's a type of cyber attack now that does something similar with radiation from HDMI cables. Although I think AI is involved with that one. Google it and you can find out more.
