To answer your questions: The paramedics team may opt to use a separable board, which has two, sometimes 3, parts to it with a split down the length. They may slide the parts simultaneously under the patient from either side to meet in the middle, thus 'sweep' the patient, hence without the need to roll. Inevitably, this is done as a team. As for the pain, the team may consider administration of Entonox (gas and air) and paracetamol, possibly IV as this has the same impact of morphine in the first 5 or so minutes. Regarding toileting, in most cases, a patient will undergo a fascia iliaca compartment block (FICB/FIB), which is a nerve block that primarily targets the Femoral nerve to induce temporary paralysis. This will allow the nursing team to slide the bedpan under the patient when needed with minimal discomfort to the patient as their nerve is non-functional. I hope this answers your question. Hi, hope your exams went well :) I mean no disrespect at all: I'm a final year med student and was wondering, since there's so much debate on PAs going on at the moment, what your OSCEs consisted of? For example, this video is a COCP counselling station, as far as I'm aware, prescribing and counselling patients on medication (eg COCP), is beyond the remit of PAs. Is this not the case? Have I got something in my understanding wrong?

@benh7870 many thanks for your question and a great one too at that. I completely agree, prescribing and as such counselling of medications is most certainly beyond the scope of a PA. However, amongst other things, you will appreciate there is much to take away from such consultations including but not limited to the impact of medications including side effects and/or risk factors to certain clinical conditions. Henceforth, the delivery of teaching of pharmacology follows the same style as that for prescribers, albeit not to the same depth nor understanding as taught on the MBBS program.
