    Your video just popped up on my TH-cam feed….2 years after you posted it. Happy to have watched it, thank you so much for your easy conversation and helpful information. Question, what are your thoughts on needle felting for steeking?

    • @VarianBrandonBKD
      @VarianBrandonBKD 8 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Karen, Thank you so much for your note. I am sorry to have not answered sooner. I have been away from my computer for the last month. To answer your question, when I first saw a demnstration of needle felting a steek, I wondered where my brain was to have not thought of it myself. So genius! The truth is, I want to do some experiementing with the technique myself. I have questions. Does the steek strink when felted? Does felting the entire steek panel affect the ability to pick up stitches for sleeves or a front rib if working on a caridgan? If you only felt the very middle stitches, leaving the stitches closest to the body unfelted so you can pick up sts, what affect does that have? Is a felted steek stiffer than unfelted steek? Does that affect the drape of the garment? I have a friend who does beautiful felting projects and obvioulsy has needle felting equiptment. We have talked about geting together for experiements, but so far not have not been able to make that happen. She lives 45 minutes away. I know this probably not answered your question. Sorry. If you do some experiemnts, lease let me know your results...and I will try to get together with my friend and try some things myself. Thanks again for asking. V

    Hello Varian. During a video of yours I remember you referring to a purl stitch on either side of the steeking stitches to use when picking up stitches. I cannot find it again. Is it one or two purl stitches either side of the steek stitches? I have a jumper pattern (bottom up) with colour work yoke which i would like to turn into a cardigan. No. One, is this possible? If so, do i continue doing the steeking stitches (in this case 9) up through the plain body of the jumpter and through the colour work in the yoke or should i have a pattern continuing through the steek stitches. Many thanks for all the great videos you put out for us knitters.

    • @VarianBrandonBKD
      @VarianBrandonBKD 9 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Ok, Ches...Yes, you can turn a pullover into a cardi. Incidentally, applause to you for doing a bottom up pattern. I find it is the way to go. You get the boring stuff over right up front and then you can reward yourself with the colorwork yoke which is decreasing as you go. It's the best! Back to your question...there are a couple of things to consider when it comees to the coorwork....I find that cardis work best when the colorwork on either side of the steek stiches up the front is a mirror image of itself which sometimes means adding an extra stitch at the end of the round. Add your steek stitches in when you cast on the bottom ribbing. The steek stitches contintue to the neck. This way the cut steek flaps add a bit of stability to to the front edges. I am not sure where I picked it up, but I add a prul stitch at the begining and end of the steek st section. P1, K8, P1...as I do a 10 sts steek. I pick up for the front ribbings...and also sleeve sts....between the purl st and the body of the sweater (jumper). During Part 2 of the steek episodes, I talk about how and where you pick up stitches up for the front ribbings and /or for hte sleeves. The pattern of those steek sts is separate from the pattern of the sweater. think of them as just place holders for the openings. Traditionally, the pattern in the steeks is either stripes...alternateing the two yarns you have per rnd...or a checkbroad...which is what I do...mostly because that is how the person who taught me did her steek stitches. In your casem whe you get to the yoke. For the body, just knit the steek sts in the body yarn. Hopefully, that helps...and is not a vlear as mud. :) Please let me know if you have any other questions. I guess I should ahve asked up front...but what pattern are you working on? I'm here if you need anything. V

    16:44 thanks so much for your series!!! It’s been so amazing!!! I’m currently working on my first steek cardigan and I’m trying to find the best method for joining new colors and stopping the old colors within the steek column. I’ve watched your previous videos in the series on the different methods. I think I’m probably over thinking it lol! But that idea of cutting up the center is throwing me on where those ends should be! What method do you find the best? Again thanks so much for walking through all of this so brilliantly!!!

    • @VarianBrandonBKD
      @VarianBrandonBKD ปีที่แล้ว

      First of all, thanks for writing....and secondly, the answer to your question I'm afraid is "it depends." I know that doesn't help much...but let me explain. If I am working with rustic yarn...Jamieson & Smith 2ply, Jamieson's Spindrift, Elemental Affects Shetland, Rauma Finullgarn , etc...I probably would just cut without securing beforehand. These yarns almost felt themselves. Actually, I rarely secure beforehand unless the yarn is very slippery...or isn't wool. That being said, I understand "just cutting" makes knitters new to using a steek a bit nervous. The crocheted secure used before cutting helps alleviate some of the anxiety...and makes a nice detail inside a cut cardigan front. I also use the facing method on a cardigan, not because that method works better, but because it creates a neat inside. ...and while I am at it, I use a 10 st steek because it makes the cut steek flap wider should a few sts fray a bit. Some people use less stiches, but I just feel better with a few extra...and that was what I was taught. :) A new method I am looking into is using needle feting on the steek sts before cutting...then nothing is going anywhere. I have not tried this method yet, tho. I do not use the sewing machine to secure sts before cutting, for no other reason than my sewing machine is always in another room hidden under some other sewing project. :) I hope this helps. If you are still nervous, knit a swatch and cut it and see what happens. Let me know if you have any other questions. As a parting note...I teach steek classes all the time. I have found the only knitters who are afraid of cutting steeks are those who have not done it. :) V

      @@VarianBrandonBKD thanks so much!!! I figured I’m over thinking it!!! I think it didn’t help that the pattern I was following said a 7 stitch steek and then said to change colors in the middle of the steek, which is kinda difficult to do in the middle of an odd number lol! I’m not very far into it so I’m going to pull it out and stick with your 10 stitch steek!! Thanks again!!!!

    • @VarianBrandonBKD
      @VarianBrandonBKD ปีที่แล้ว

      @@jhendrex3205 Yeah... there are those who use odd numbered steeks where they cut in the middle of the central stitch. I have also seen even numbered steeks where you drop the old color at the central stitches and just start using the new coor on the next stitch. I have done it that way. You have to give the tails a tug when you go to cut the steek to tighten/tidy things up. It also works best with the more rustic yarns that kinda felt themselves. I actually prefer weaving in the new color and weaving "out" the old color within the central 4-6 stitches...just to anchor them a bit. It really doesn't matter as long as your ends are within the steek panel. Ends outside the panel could cause some problems. Good lcuk with everything. Have fun! ..and let me know if you have any more issues/questions. V

    If you pearl back when making a swatch, does it change It?

    • @VarianBrandonBKD
      @VarianBrandonBKD ปีที่แล้ว

      Kathy, I hate to say this, but it depends. Generally colorwork is worked in the round where the knit side is always facing you, as opposed to knitting flat where you knit a row and purl back. This is done because most colorwork knitters find it is easier to have the knit side facing you at all times. Garments done in thee round usually have little to no seaming and rarely use purl stitches. It is commonly thought that you should work the swatch in the same way. Colorwork knitters generally swatch using methods that simulate knitting in the round. Another factors is most knitters get a different gauge when purling than they do when they are knitting. You will notice I said "most" knitters. You might be one of the knitters who can consistantly get the same gauge knitting and purling. You will have to do some experimenting to see. All in all, I have found it is better to swatch in the manner...or simulated manner... you are going to work the garment. I hopy this helped to answer your question.

      Thanks, Denise. I am so glad you are enjoying the series...which is really a group of videos of things I thought people might be interested in about the deisgn process. Glad you have! V

    Interesting insight into your process. I had to chuckle when hearing your comments about the Cumulativa and Mountain Meadow Wool's subtle color gradient, since that was one of the things that attracted me to the kit. That said, I think the pattern would look wonderful in a brighter color palette as well if that is someone's aesthetic. (I have been known to knit in strong jewel tones when not being subtle, LOL)

    Thank you for your helpful videos. I’m on my first steering project, Orkney by Marie Wallin, and I’m nearing the point where I’ll be finished the actual knitting and making my cuts! Your videos are helping me get prepared, thank you so much!

    Ive tried this so many times and watched what you've been doing very closely, however nothing is getting "locked in" for me. The new color just stays as a loose strand at the back of my work.

      OMG, Alex, I owe you an appology. Your comment somehow got by me without me answering...or at least commenting. I am so sorry. Hopefully, you have found your answer elsewhere...but just in case...I used to have the same issue until I realized that when using a two handed method and catching the yarn held in the left hand with the yanr held inthe right hand is a two stitch process. Meaning if the left yarn is correctly paced, it takes knitting one stitch normally to lock that left yarn in. Here is a link to a more recent video that might help .... th-cam.com/video/KmJvaitlFG8/w-d-xo.html It is under the Tutorials section entitled Catching Floats. Let me knowif you still have an issue. I promise to watch me comments better. V

    Golly it was good to see you again. I a, sorry that the past year has been so difficult but relieved to hear that all is ok, and I surely pray that it remains ok. I love that you partner with Mountain Meadow Wool. I just finished the Steven West MKAL using their fingering and am in the midst of a colorwork your pullover. I eagerly await your new colorwork pattern, using their yarn. I enjoyed hearing about your knitting camp at the Episcopal Retreat Center. I am an Episcopalian out here in Idaho.

    It is nice to see you again, Varian. My thoughts are with you and your husband. Over the last 18 months my husband has also had a significant health issue with two long stays in hospital after surgeries. I found it helped to knit to pass the time as I sat beside his bed whilst he recovered. I also knitted small projects such as fair isle ‘keps’ from Shetland (good beginner fair isle projects for me). Unfortunately significant health challenges take a LONG time to get through and recover from. But I am glad to hear that it sounds like your husband is recovering well and life is getting back to normal. Best wishes.
