I really hope they don't fuck it up. Disney has been on a roll lately for shit shows. They really need to retain the tone and complexity of the characters. I really hope they don't "marvelize" the show and add quirky cheesy dialogue that screws it up. It really really needs to remain faithful to the original atmosphere. I have nothing but faith in the actors, but their performance is as good as the writers, who seem to be on a continuous downward spiral.

look another Spiderman apologist video essay pretending there’s absolutely nothing corny or hilarious about these movies. Oh yea and spiderman 3 didn’t happen 😅 Listen there are great things to praise this trilogy for, but let’s just keep it real. For example, every scene with JJJ is still genuinely funny and holds up today. But the sheer ridiculousness of green goblin making Spiderman choose between the woman he loves and a literal school bus* of children shouldn’t be lost on you 22 years later.

I really loved Tobey's Spider-Man movies, although 3 was the worst IMO. But great video! Keep up the work.

Honestly, I kind of ignored this show because I felt like Batman: TAS was so good that retreading the same ground wasn't really necessary after the Arkham games, and would at best probably come off as later-season TAS. Thanks to watching video essays like these, I'm actually super intrigued now, since it sounds like they're mixing up the characters personalities and motivations so much, in a sort of Alternate Universe way. It still may not be for me, but only one way to find out.

Its nice seeing the show not need to place itself time wise and have the 1930s-40s aesthetic but not have the war or anything irl interacting with it, this is a fantasy with grounded elements, this city's people is sick enough it has costumed people running around and cops and politicians are so corrupted it shows why Batman deals with [villain] every month like its a scheduled date of roughing each other up before sending them into Arkam to rest up for next fight, people are unwell in gotham and Bruce/Batman wants Arkam to work but its so corrupt all he could do is damage control(while having his arc growing to appreciate Alfred [maybe adopt the 4 robins] and have that arc) this batman is messy but its because its his early years, not origins new but new enough where people copying him (making gadgets[catwomen car n knuckles])will catch him off guard n he will grow wiser n counter them later making new gadets for himself but also the things he will deal with will escalate too(Mr.Freeze, Poison Ivy, Joker so on) so will his gadets n same for the villains as they are left to keep growing n living (better or worse[better Harley quinn joins bats later in stories but always start sided with joker[worse Jason robin becomes redhood])

I think the Harley episode was my favorite. I love HQ and the variations of her portrayal, but they've pretty much been shades of the same character while THIS HQ is TOTALLY different. She's her own person, making her own decisions and rules to her own sense of right/wrong/justice. Fascinating character, and her "playpen" was completely messed up and insano. I also loved the Easter Eggs with 2 of her "victims" - the 60s King Tut as well as the "Pagliacci" type clown which The Joker in the 60s Batman series once used as a disguise. There is a LOT of great psychological studies going on throughout this series with the various characters, including Alfred's handling of Bruce/Batman, and I agree that the first half of the season spent less time with Bats and the stories seemed rushed, and we do need Bruce/Batman to be more fleshed out, but I hope that will be in the coming season/s. I did like how they handled some of the villains, including the corrupt cops, and I thought that the Dent storyline was fine, but all of those also could have benefited from more time, but either they needed more episodes, longer episodes, or both to really give us more detail of the characters. This Batman set during 1930s. During this time there was extreme racism, sexism and it was illegal to be gay! So for that reason this show doesn't make any sense. That saying the animation is good.

Also just like Batman the animated series used technology from different eras to culminate into the iconic art deco style , this show is not set in the past. The style is just made to invoke a timeless retrograde feel, it’s not actually set in the 40s. so certain demographics being in positions of power isn’t that big a deal.

I loved the show. The changes to the characters didn’t bother me, the batman has been around for over 80 years so I’m sorta tired of people complaining about changes when there’s already dozens of adaptations of characters that are each drastically different, I don’t really get wanting to keep thing the same forever that’s so boring and conforming. Honestly the problem isn’t gender or race swapping, if the character isn’t dependent on their ethnicity or gender to make them who they are at their core, then why not have a different interpretation? As long as it doesn’t over shadow the actual narrative of the story as some mcu projects tend to do.

They changed a lot of established characters and concepts (im not even referring to gender/race swaps). That's always problematic. It leads to the inevitable comparison with the original versions. If you change something you better replace it with sth that's nearly as good as the original and make sure that this change will not be followed in other series or media. Because those changes cannot be permanent, otherwise you ruin iconic and established characters and concepts. Im mainly talking about Harley. Anyway overall it was okay. The first episodes (besides ep 2) were really boring

This show felt pretty woke with some of the choices made, but there were some actually good choices made. Batman had some good emotional moments, and a subtle clue that I really got a kick out of was Harley Quinn's mentor being casually mentioned as Johnathan Crane. It was just name-dropped with no fanfare, and it subtlety hinted at Harley being a bit of an extremist, before she ever revealed it. That makes me think there were other subtle hints sprinkled in, throughout the show.

I just watched the first episode. gotta tell ya, frame for frame, it is aesthetically sublime. It is gorgeous. The female Penguin is a surprise. Sight unseen, I hated the idea, but what can I say? Just now watching her, I liked her! A lot. Batman physically battling the big woman was great. She is so flamboyant I'm not sure she really is a woman. Staying in line with the woke undertones, he might be trans! Episode 1 was at least as good as anything in the BTAS. I recommend people give it a chance. It is good stuff. The quality of the animation and the writing overpower the flaws. Ironically the one problem I do have with it is that there are way too many black people and black people in many significant positions. You can't help but notice it, and it's just odd. Black people weren't police commissioners and top-tier actresses and district attorneys during the 40s. Nor were they detectives, It's got dark skinned people all over the place and it jumps out at you like something is wrong. It's like a racial uncanny valley.

I also love how distinct Hamish’s Bruce and Batman voice are. It’s amazing.

Gave up at the first episode, was just messy hate watch bait for the crowd who always complain about things being woke. I knew immediately when I saw they made Penguin a woman and didn't do a single interesting thing with the character to justify that decision, they barely even made her act like Penguin she's just some generic mob boss. You could have replaced her with Falcone and it would have made no difference whatsoever, except at least Falcone has an interesting dynamic usually with his family, while Penguin here could care less about her own kids, which doesn't make her more threatening or interesting, it just removes any potential for emotional weight between the character dynamic. You're telling me they made the decision to make Penguin a woman AND give her 2 children who are at this point full grown adults she seemingly raised herself, and you want to do NOTHING with that relationship? What a waste. Hell even the voice actress delivers her lines cleanly like she's just a regular woman, and not some weirdo slimeball Penguin is supposed to be. Made it immediately obvious to me the show had nothing really new or interesting to bring to the table and was just going to be flat boring and generic and trying to get by on cheap easy outrage bait, so I wasn't going to waste any more of my time watching it.

The show felt boring and not well fleshed out, but as a Batman fan I'm glad it's gaining an audience. I believe the series was greenlit with two season, so unless it's canceled there should be a second season coming.

I hate how this show ignores racism, it would have been so much more interesting to see this time period actually being used. Still 8/10 tho
