Spring on the Onaping River - A Y Jackson
Group of Seven Art was a new art style with a Canadian flare. The members and associates of the group were active in the late 1800's and early 1900 when the art society of Montreal and Toronto was heavily influenced by the industrialist who often lived on the Golden Square Mile in Montreal. These industrialists needed engineers and designers to build and sell their products and ideas. Many of them funded the art societies and schools attended by A. Y. Jackson and other artists of this era. Jackson went to war as did others of the group. He became a war artist and continued his art career after the war. He painted along the Onaping River in the 1950's. Had " Spring on the Onaping River " not been lost it would be worth a small fortune today. Some Group of Seven artworks are worth millions.
Money aside... these artists were first and foremost a part of a propaganda machine and most worked with the Canadians who created Carlton Studios and Grip Ltd in Toronto. Grip was a Lampoon style magazine in the 1890's until it was sold and became a commercial studio with a new agenda.
The group of seven are a mysterious bunch of characters and can only be understood by studying their background and the influences of the time. IMO
They saw nature in a different way than what was in front of them. Did Jackson do justice to the natural beauty of the High Falls on Onaping River ?

Railroad commercial competition near Sudbury in the early 1900's resulted in this intersection between Canadian Northern ( CNoR - revamped as Canadian National by 1917 ) and Canadian Pacific. Both groups linked Toronto to Parry Sound and Sudbury Junction. CP created Sudbury Junction in 1883. CNoR ( CN ) created Capreol Junction in the mid 1910's. Both lines ran along the Wahnapitae river to thi...

This unnamed pond was part of an ecosystem drain which connected to the Ban...

Turns out that Moore lake was not named after a lumber merchant. Elwood S. Moore was on the scene in 1929 and worked with the Gordon Lake Mining Syndicate or received samples from their team as Professor of Geology. The Creighton Gold Mines company had filed for bankruptcy Moore and company took an option on it ( so goes the story ). Moore Lake and Emma Lake were likely named after him. Levey Creek was already noted as such in the 1884 report of Creighton township surveyor John McAree. www.google.ca/books/edition/Sessional_Papers/RmszAQAAMAAJ?hl=en&gbpv=1&dq=Creighton+township+1885&pg=RA12-PA50&printsec=frontcover in 1884.

Looks like a good lake for fishing, I've never been up there. You had some interesting exposures with your drone footage, not sure if that was deliberate or not. If not, I recommend ND filters for bright sunny days like this. That said, I accidentally changed my exposure setting from auto to manual once, and did not get good results even with the filter. Beautiful lake with lots of islands to explore, I might try to get there some day. Thanks for sharing. 👍

trip to Gogama was worth it... however this history stuff keeps on giving and the James Miller stuff has me wanting to go to Magnetawan river and Miller's Falls and to Larder Lake where i believe the story extends as the traders worked the northlands .... lol - in the end there could be 20 people working this project and taking drones along and the story would still be only fractionally told - a version of it anyway

    • @Sayitaint_So

I can only guess... but i'd bet that it has something to do with the Wallbridge Mining group who are studying many sites in the Sudbury basin including sites along the Murray and Creighton faults.. something to do with Elsie Mountain.. mining history goes that the Clergue group ( Sault Ste Murray ) bought two claims in the Sudbury area in the 1880's or 90's. One was the Gertrude Mine near Creighton mine. The other was the Elsie Mine which was very close to the Murray mine and eventually became a piece of Murray MIne. Recall that the Creighton was not mined until 1901 even though surveyor Salter had noted that compass anomaly ( rich mineral source ) way back in the 1850's while mapping the area. That source was ( by common history ) only rediscovered when Henry Ranger was prospecting in the area in the 1880's or/and by surveyor McAree who had surveyed Creighton township in 1884 ( sorry but i am a bit of a conspiracy type - they don't tell us everything ... 😉 ) wallbridgemining.com/site/assets/files/2512/sudbury_tech_report_2018.pdf let me know if you find out more about Murray mine exploration in 2022 Elsie Mountain Formation, McKim township - Murray mine = McKim township www.geologyontario.mndm.gov.on.ca/mndmfiles/pub/data/imaging/ofr6243/OFR6243.pdf
