Adams was a British actress who turned to writing hymns and poems after health issues prevented her from continuing acting.
Adams wrote the hymn in 1841 at the request of her pastor, William Johnson Fox, for a sermon on Genesis 28:11-19. The hymn is based on the story of Jacob's dream in which he saw angels ascending and descending a ladder.
Original music
Adams' sister, Eliza Flower, originally composed the music for the hymn. However, it didn't gain popularity until it was set to the tune composed by Lowell Mason.
