    did you test it cross band? trying to do this on the same band will definately cause the two radios on the repeater to interfere with each other and lose sensibility. Cross band should be significantly better. Or as other comments have said, significant distance between antennas would help

    Not sure why you a blaming the controller for your lack of provisioning suitable separation, duplexer cavities, antenna & adequate transmit power (to meet your expectations of cover a LOT more distance). How far extra are you expecting it to transmit beyond the normal HT range when they are both co located ? Perhaps looking at the purity of the audio in & out of the controller (compared to each other) and any TXD also be of value. This is important for any data related transmissions I think your summary is biased based on flawed testing (and apparently expectations without supporting technical data). Good to know that its not reliant on VOX

    I'm curious what the difference is between the 328 and the 628 ... The simplex repeaters just record and regurgitate - you won't have ANY desensing issues with that. Either the 328 or the 628 have nothing to do with whether its crossband or not, they're just keying the mic and passing an audio signal. They're both duplex controllers.

      Bump …. That’s why I watched these vids as well. What you plug into the SureCom doesn’t matter. What it does with it or how you interact with it is the difference. And THAT’s apparently the mystery. Can anyone tell me what one dies that the other does not?

  • @notsure7874
    @notsure7874 ปีที่แล้ว

    On an analog repeater, I turn roger beeps off. They have a squelch tail, you don't need it. DMR is different.

  • @notsure7874
    @notsure7874 ปีที่แล้ว

    Ok so - the controller will work, but the problem is that you have to have either a duplexer, or a LOT of antenna separation - unless you're crossband repeating. You can horizontally separate them, but you need a lot more distance than vertically separating them. Using a duplexer, you can use a single antenna, but then you need something like heliax. LMR400 or any wire with an aluminum shield will not work, it'll just desense the receiver. I've heard you can use coax with pure copper braid without a shield, but I've never tried it, and idk where you'd even get that cable. You need WAY more than 15 feet of horizontal separation, it's about 30 feet of VERTICAL separation, it's more like 70 feet of horizontal separation you'd need. With the desensing, what will happen is the repeater will "work" but you wont get anywhere. The antenna system alone is somewhere approaching 1k USD. Bridgecom Systems has premade heliax cables. Then - to get range, you need height. So get a base antenna about 20+ feet up, run heliax to a lighting arrestor, to the duplexer, then you run one half of the duplexer to each radio ... but you need more than 5 watts too. You're going to want a mobile radio that can hit around 25 - 50 watts. THEN you'll get somewhere in the neighborhood of 10 - 15 miles on flat terrain - give or take.

      I bought two Retevis RT97 repeaters. One GMRS and one VHF. Both work fantastic. They come with 120V and 12VDC power supplies and a decent antenna. I got about a 10km range (repeater to handheld in one direction) with those units. They are a bit pricey but we’ll worth the investment I think. Everything else I tested was crap. In a SHTF scenario i need reliability. I cannot afford to be tinkering around for hours or days with an unreliable system. The RETEVIS RT97 is turn key.

    I am just looking at this trying to find out more about the surecom products. My hunch is that it is not really the surecom causing the grief but the close proximity desensing the front ends on the cheaper "Fangs". How was the SWR on those magmounts when you checked it? reflected RF back down the radios and maybe into the receive radio could really cut down the range. Did you put them on a metal ground plane? Again my thought is there was RF contamination back into the receive... probably. I am just spitt-balling getting ready to do some similar experiments. I am setting up a bigger repeater with a duplexer but I want to try what you are doing for a SHTF in a toolbox style repeater with the two antennas. Just to save $$$ I will probably just do the Cross-Cable and Vox method to start and then if it look promising I might get an actual controller. Oh an though I am a Licensed Extra class Ham I will be doing these on GMRS with Type accepted Baufengs or Retevis radios. That way I don't have to jack around with frequency coordinators and my whole fam can use them next time they shut down cell coms. You It may take two cheap @$$ harbor freight tool boxes separated and a longer audio cable extension looped through ferrites but there is no reason this idea should not work

  • @MikesRadioRepairRestoration

    Your antennas need significant VERTICAL separation. The only way to do cross band repeat is just that cross band. Not in band.

    • @notsure7874
      @notsure7874 ปีที่แล้ว

      You can do horizontal separation but the distances are ridiculous. UHF you need about 30 feet of vertical separation... probably 80+ feet of horizontal. Their "recomendations" are 100% wrong.

    • @notsure7874
      @notsure7874 ปีที่แล้ว

    • @notsure7874
      @notsure7874 ปีที่แล้ว

      Annnnnd the simplex and Retevis vids never made it :/ It's too bad, I was glad to finally see an honest review of these repeaters. SOOO many tactical channels get paid from Retevis, and they talk about how COOL they are ... and nothing about how they just don't work in real life. Well ... apparently the Retevis now has a single antenna port and a duplexer. The old ones way back when I was eyeballing them had 2 antenna ports so the Retevis WILL work, but it's pretty weak - and you still can't use normal antenna cable. It's not as bad as 2 antennas next to each other, but still no good.

      I hear you brother.... I'm just getting into GMRS and trying to set up 2 radio's (UV-5GPlus) as a repeater and having same issues. I have tried to different configurations. First, I purchased a $40 switch box that plugs into K-adapter and it automatically configurations the RX radio to use VOX. Next, I configured the radio's to use a repeater channel +5 using churp. That works until I go about 200-300 foot away from the radio's and then I couldn't not hear me transmitting using another radio to listen. test FAILED. Also, tried using just a mono adapter 2.5 and 3.5 male ends to both radios but only had 6 ft. of cable. I got the same results as you did.. Bottom line, I wish I knew about your channel weeks ago which have save me time and money.. Anyway, I just ordered a RETEVIS R97S repeater and should be here in about a week. Lessons learned, by trying to go cheap.... LOL

    Making sure i understand this because im new to all of this. Either of these will work with one radio or simplex orbduplexbmode if i understand that right? Ive had a cheap radio for awhile and managed to get and listen in on ham,murs,frs,gmrs. I wanna upgrade radios but in my research i realized i have no gmrs repeaters in my area. So here i am trying to figure out shtf repeaters until they catch up to speed. I dont wanna go through the work of a ham liscence at the time so id like to just do the gmrs liscence. Sorry for the newbie question.

    I've got a lot of mixed feeling regarding "off-shore" brand repeater controllers, or tech in general. But...Surecom is a very nice plug and play solution for quick setups, and I like the idea behind it. Regarding your range issue (forgive me if you cover this in a later video, I've just started this multi part series), look into vertical separation. I dont have the tech to build/setup a duplexer, so I opted for a vertical separated antenna system. UHF (GMRS) is -30db reduction at a 10-12ft vertical separation! I've got the fortune of having a 30 ft tower, so I can have decent antenna separation, and it works for me. But, trees are tall, toss a line up there and get two antennas running with space between them.
