The pistons go in easier if you use a rubber grease. Your difficulty was probably because you used brake fluid to lubricate the piston.

Have you ever tested your torque wrenches for accuracy ?
No I haven’t. Two wrenches that I use the most come with calibration certificate traceable back to NIST standard. I pay special care when using all my torque wrenches so the setting is brought back to 0 when not in use. This type of work does not require very accurate tool anyway and if you take care of the tool, it can really go long way without re-calibration. I also always buy torque wrenches brand new since you never know how good care POs were taking. Many times you can see techs dropping them on floor and not resetting to 0 basically ever which is bad for spring and overall accuracy. If the tool is used for applications that require extreme accuracy, then often calibration is necessary and those are different type of torque wrenches used for those applications. When I am done I have always assumed that it would sell for $6,000. But it has given me great satisfaction, it’s not for sale so I don’t really care. Good luck to you on the sale.

Great video just got a 1974 and 1976 r90s, 74 need the carb done,
I’ve spent a lot of money on my r90/6 and k75s projects. To me the experience and knowledge gained is far more valuable than money loss or gain. Like you I’ll sell the bikes for 20-30k but seeing how that likely won’t happen it’ll force me to keep them which is exactly what I want to do. I’m slowly building up a nice bmw shop/garage which is fun as I plan to continue to collect at least 1 bmw from each decade 1940 onward. Your content is very inspiring. Thank you

16:05 A tall screwdriver supported on one of the "balconys" in the bell housing was my perfect blocking tool.
My bike has now over 200k km on the clock. After I destroyed one of the exhaust threads in my early times with the bike, I thoroughly heat the finned nuts with a powerful gas torch. Forget hot air blowers for they are too weak and slow. Doing so, the second thread is still in pretty good shape and easy the open. As anti seize I used a white paste plus graphite powder.
One more with Lester wheels. Over here in Germany they are regarded to be a life threatening risk and for sure they lower the value of a R90S significantly.

Bought my 1972 r60/5 in 2005, and it ran great, but not knowing history, I was planning on doing a back to front maintenance job, but third kid, then divorce yada yada. I lost most everything, but never let that bike go. Last kid moved out last summer, so finally have the time and money to work on it and am enjoying every minute of it. I'm not surprised at all by how much money it took to rebuild yours. I don't expect to ever get the money spent out of my bike, but the satisfaction I get is well worth the cost. Two of my kids plan to get their mototcycle licenses when they can, so hopefully can pass it on to them someday :-)

That was a reasonable and honest statement for everbody who concerns buying a vintage bike. The bike looks very nice, but I would prefer the genuine snowflake or even spoke wheels over these aftermarket maybe Lester wheels.
This one came with Lesters. Original wheels were spoked and I do like them as well but these also look great in my opinion, especially when you paint them. Thanks for watching!

I got a 1980 R100Rt that was a basket case that was involved in a garage fire, payed $300 for the cases that weren't on it during the fire and the bike was free. At first I thought I might part it out but in the end I decided "hell, I can fix this, I'll build an RS out of it" Already had an RT and a GS and did my own work. Anyway, I stripped it down to a bare frame and an engine block and started finding parts. The one good thing is they are relatively easy to work on and parts are available. It turned out to be right when Covid happened and I had time to work on it. Long story short, I built it hand picking the best of everything, a true "Frankenstein" bike but it came out great, it's truly mine as much as my kid. I never added up the receipts (don't really want to know) and I know I could have bought a real one for less, but where's the fun in that? So I understand and thanks for this video-

My mother didn't like the bright orange at the time. LOL He never rode it in the rain or on wet roads. I'd guess it's 9.5/10. He passed away 6th October 2024 suddenly aged 91 and he would have loved to see your channel! All the best sir.
Very truthful video! After watching this I think I'll pass on doing a restoration. I'm a gear head and I do my own maintenance on my 2005 BMW GS 1200. That's enough for me plus I just don't have the money for this type of project.
The reason for buying this is because it looks like a real bike,i honestly cant tell most modern bikes apart,reason why i bought a new royal enfield 650gt and now a 80 r100rs
Nice job. I like the treatment to the shape of the seat pad and cover. It looks modified. It blends perfectly to the tank. I have an '86 RT exactly like the one you have there. I have converted it to a standard after 25 years of storage by the pervious owner. Cheers.
As an ex airhead owner in the 80's/90's I think you've restored it to look beautiful, and as you say unique. You bring home the true costs if I ever want to own another airhead at that level of restoration! I also enjoy your spannering vids 👍.

Upcoming videos will have this addressed but for those that are already published it seems it is a bit too late unless someone has an idea how to push mono on both sides in youtube. I figured out how to do it in editing software (too bad it was not checked by default) but doubt it can be done post production. Thanks once more, very helpful!
Thank you for this. I bought a very badly trashed '77 R100/7 for $1000 Cdn and spent an entire year working on my own to restore it. I spent over $!0,000 in parts and paint. I spent an additional $2000 for special tools. I think it belongs in my living room now because it is such a beautiful machine. I will never recover the costs but what I learned in the process is priceless. I went on to restore and maintain three K bikes (K1100, K100RS and K75S ) two of which I still have and I also bought a 2002 R1150RT which I lovingly maintain and ride regularly. I don't think I will every have to take a machine to a dealer for repair now that I have the tools and confidence to do it myself. I must confess though that I had been recently divorced when I took on the project and this gave me the kind of self imposed isolation and therapy I much needed. It was worth every penny.

I think a person has to consider reusing things. In the car world they are calling it recommission. This kind of work is a DIY project, otherwise it's not worth it. One thing about a "project" is that you can sink money as you please rather than paying on a loan.

Great video , thank you for making it , do you know the basic setting for the idle screw is it also one and a half turns out ? , also is that a vent hole port on the outside of the carb slide body , it has a slope side with a hole in it ? All the best , Don.
Idle screw initial setting is one turn in after it starts lifting the slide. You will hear the screw changes the sound as you are turning it in. When it changes the sound, it means it started lifting the slide. Another way of doing this if you are not able to hear this sound change, is to lift throttle cable just tiny bit up just to remove any cable free play. Turn the screw in until cable starts lifting. That’s your touch point. Then one full turn in and that’s the initial setting for idle screw. That hole is a vent and very important is to make sure it is clean. During rebuild and not shown in this video, I always squirt carb cleaner and do compressed air pass on each opening in carb after ultrasonic cleaning just to make sure there isn’t any plugged hole. When bleeding the caliper, you always want to place the bottle at least 5 cm above the bleeding valve to avoid air bubbles being sucked into the system whlie the bleeding valve is open.
Placement of bottle is irrelevant since bottle has some air inside anyway. What matters is that you have hose going up from your valve because that hose has trapped fluid without any air which then prevents air of coming back. However, if system is pressurized from master cylinder like here, air cannot come back against the pressure as you are opening and closing the valve. Thanks for watching.
