Defending Democracy: Why Journalism Matters. A Decoder Dialogue.
Democracy is under threat across the globe. So too is journalism.
In this Decoder Dialogue, we look at the role of journalism and quality reporting in defending democracy, informing citizens and upholding the principles of a just, fair and democratic society.
What role does journalism play in defending democracy? How have changes to the landscape of journalism and information creation affected political and societal realities in countries worldwide? And why is it important to defend quality reporting and reporters?
Join us for a roundtable discussion on the role of journalism in defending democracy featuring youth voices from across our network in conversation with subject experts Alexandru Ciocan and Helen Womack.
-----------------
Alexandru Ciocan is the editor-in-chief of Gen, revistă, a youth-led, youth-focused online magazine run by an editorial team of young people in Romania. He has also worked with a number of media literacy and civic engagement projects for high schools at Forum Apulum including Mobile Stories. Formerly, he was a language and literature teacher.
Helen Womack is a career journalist, editor and writer. From 1985 to 2015, Womack reported from Moscow for the Reuters international news agency as well as The Independent, The Times and the Fairfax newspapers of Australia. Now based in Budapest, Womack covers the European Union’s relatively new eastern members. Since the refugee crisis of 2015, she has written for the United Nations Refugee Agency, UNHCR. Her interest in human stories, geopolitical realities and trust in the power of quality reporting give her a fascinating perspective on the role of journalism in defending democracy.

You should care about the freedom of the press.✊ Dánae Vílchez, a journalist published by The Washington Post, Newsweek, openDemocracy and Committee to Protect Journalists, explains why in this video made for the Mobile Stories project. Today, the Italian government announced that journalist and podcaster Cecilia Sala, working for Il Foglio and Chora Media, is returning home. She was arrested in Iran on December 19, 2024, three days after an Iranian businessman was arrested in Italy at the request of U.S. authorities. It's far from unusual. Press freedom around the world is being threatened by the very people who should be its guarantors - political authorities. According to Reporters Without Borders (RSF) 553 journalists and media workers around the world remain detained at this very moment. #PressFreedom

the eu is outright banning Nitrates from farming, this sounds OK for their virtue signaling, but farm animal waste is full of nitrates and no nitrate fertilizers makes farmers really struggle to obtain a profit. Its dirty greedy globalists destroying the food supply chain.

I really like how, where ever Peter is, he looks all dark & mysterious. Very appropriate. Fascinating discussion too.

Isn’t Taiwan hiding some very dark secrets? the USA would like to own the secrets held within this country ….A lot is hidden underground ??
Real heroin addicts don't tie off. That's how you blow your veins out. Can't shoot dope thru shot out veins.
I agree, although when I used H I would crouch & put my knee under my armpit & clench fist open & shut a few times & then have my fix & immediately remove knee from arm pit . this would always make my veins pop up , never had a collapsed vein either.
Good to watch and listed.

In England up until late 80s you could get ampoules of injection methadone with them you’d get dexys and diconal.
Lab Grade DiactylMorphine (Heroin) when made by a Pharmaceutical Company is basically 2.5-3× the Strength of Pure Morphine Base after a few chemicals are added to Concentrate it, much like Lab Grade Coca-Cola👃Base it is still Partially Natural and is probly much purer at that point then the North American market knows, but when you see the Clandestine Jungle Labs in Columbia, Bolivia, Brazil, Peru, Northern Chile, and Ecuador of either Drug and the homemade uncleaned equipment it looks like 100 random chemicals are added, but alot of those buckets and jugs contain the same Chems, but there isnt anywhere near 100 chems needed to make either one, they are still a Partially Natural Substance, Mexican Cartels buy the base from Jungle Labs FOR The US and Canadian Markets and often add things to it because of the all the Competition and Mexican Cartels have splintered to dozens and dozens of Cartels, and thats not including Transnational Gangs who move it like Italian Calabrians/Sicilians, MS13, La Eme, 18th Street, Sureno's, Norteno's, and The Paisa's who have their own networks in North American Cities, Usually without Larger Cartel Knowledge which they are just paid a %, so they have stuff going on the side that makes them more money Like Meth Superlabs, and F because only a few Cartels mess with F cuz if the big guys do its killing their network alot faster, so much of US and Canadas imports are actually Cut IN Mexico before it even comes across. While most of the Russian, European, Australian, South African, and Asian Market is much more controlled and pure since Spains Middlemen have been outdone by the Russian Mafia and Balkan Cartels (Serbian, Armenian, Albanian) who are living in South America just like the Mafias Ndrangheta doing Quality Control and learning the Trade, but most if all marrying into Cartels to Ensure good biz practice. Its a crazy world and Safer to stay away instead of Partying, in North America anyway. 🌎 be safe!

Remember the war on drugs in America is not a war on drugs it's a war on PEOPLE not drugs. And it will just get way worse before it ever gets better and it probably will never get better. The amount of money that the United States spends finding drugs is astronomical and the amount of jobs are huge that will never change.
I thought there is a place in the USA that has decriminalized all drugs?
Big pharm created - grifters in the medical fields and treatment programs squeezed their profits too - - there's a whole history on where this stuff begins and ends but big pharm is coming to the rescue again - prescribing and making millions off their "remedies". They created a monster and now they're creating another to heal the lives they ruined... This has been (in my own observations) the crime of the century - systematic culling... that @bradpnw1897 mentions... war on PEOPLE...
@@ColonelSanders-xo9hp Yes and they did it in literally the worst way possible. They couldnt f this up more and now they are recriminalising

@@tzurgurin5868 Not just Kensington but, fentanyl has COMPLETELY replaced heroin in the U.S. Known cases of tranq are very rare in the Midwest,so far and I hope it never catches on. I haven’t seen heroin in more than a year, now. All fetty.

Why doesnt it work in portland?
See @6:40 in the video. Those things are what's missing from Portland. One example is our healthcare system, getting good treatment is actually quite difficult. Here in Chicago (3rd largest city in the US), I am having an extremely hard time finding a suboxone clinic that takes insurance so I can afford it on my own. That's not to mention the importance of inpatient treatment itself.
Because drugs are still prohibited. We need full legalization, not just decriminalization.
@@taxevader7777 🎯🎯🎯🎯 BINGO. if prescription pain pills were not demonized and now next to impossible to get, i would start my OWN PROGRAM called 90 day ladder for ANYONE on FETANYL. Idc HOW MUCH your on, if you WANT TO QUIT, transfer to 3 percocets a day for 30 days, 2 percocets for 30 days, and then 1 a day . Now you have completley rearragned your body and minds addiction. On the first day of that fourth month , you will feel shitty, nauseas, depressed and overall down, HOWEVER, you WILL be able to FUNCTION. percocet/oxy addiction is beatable within a normal diagnosis. Fetanyl ISNT. Right now, i do a gram of fet a day. Its litetarlly IMPOSSIBLE for me to find 3 months of percocets ANYWHERE on the streets. If i could, id be clean in 4 months and my life would be saved. Right now, its either fetanyl or switch to methadone, which i truley feel that as far as overall health and addiction wise, is WORSE. Thass why they pump it out like fuckin GASOLINE, and sugar coat it by givin a cute cherry flavor and making it oral. PURE POSISION and setup for failure in disguse. NOBODY at your local methadone clinic is relapsing. Theyve all been for 5 yrs or more, guarenteed. But theyve cut the production of painkillers by over 50% , and scared the drs. Into horror if they prescribe to anybody that isnt in a fuckin Hospice situation. Sick twisted, planned and organized form of population control by our government.

My dude I loved the video and I'm writing an essay on the subject. I'm on your side but it would help me a lot if you would cite your video at the end :'v
Hi Fernando :)) This video was produced by one of our past students. We will reach out to him, but it might not be in time for your essay. In the meantime you can cite the video itself and look for supporting graphs online.
Heroin is basically morphine, and when US doctors refuse to treat pain caused by arthritis and crohns not because they don't try to treat their patients, but because the bureaucracy above them will fine them or revoke their license so when you're forced to suffer and run yourself into the ground using heroine and then other times ketamine has allowed me to switch farming practices and save the farm. Of course you don't want to use heroin for more than a week or you're going to have some withdraw symptoms. The system is the problem.
Heroin is used in British hospitals as a painkiller, I have been injected with it several times after my tolerance to morphine became too high. The first time I was given it the nurse asked me who my favourite musician was and I said Hendrix and the nurse said well you are going to meet him soon, then shot me up.
I have never used heroin but the same applies for Codeine. Both heroin and codeine are turned into Morphine when used in any way except for injecting it, but it depends on the persons genetics. Shooting up heroin will not break down the heroin into morphine before it reaches the opioid receptors. If im not mistaken this is one of the reasons people who start shooting up heroin dont go back to snorting, boofing or popping it, because its not the same drug.
I'm making a video about drug addiction being a disease and this video was helpful to my research
We are so glad we could help <3
