    I assume you couldn't be as ornate or fast in certain areas of the song as the fretting of the clavichord and the lack of octaves makes you have to improv? It still sounds good, but im guessing it was difficult to pull off if not impossible to play all the ornaments and trills

    It's interesting how everything is a cycle. "Ka is a wheel", as Roland always said. Back in Bach's time, this instrument would cost the GDP of a small village. Then in the mid 20th century, the electric piano based on the clavichord was invented as a low-cost mass-producible piano for students in post-war Europe. And now, once again, clavichord-like instruments are quite expensive, including or even especially the surviving Hohner Clavinets. I want the one with a whammy bar.

    • @clavichord
      @clavichord 16 วันที่ผ่านมา

      Printed music in Bach's time was also very expensive... certainly only the rich and well off could afford it, and those musicians who could not, copied the score by hand

    What kind of material is it that is used to mute the plucked string on this instrument? Or to put it what is most commonly used (mute)? It's sound is quite reminiscent to the Sitar and Sitar like instrument. Is there any connection to that?

    • @clavichord
      @clavichord หลายเดือนก่อน

      Thanks for your question. Strings in a clavichord are not plucked but hit by a metal tangent. As soon as the key is released, the metal tangent no longer makes contact with the string... which is then muted by a listing cloth which is woven inbetween the strings at the left side. If you look carefully at my other videos on my channel, you will see the listing cloth at the far end of the strings away from the camera. Ultimately, I think all stringed instruments are related if you go back far enough in time. I know that early European keyboard music and lute music were influenced by each other at the end of the Renaissance and start of the Baroque period... and the lute is related to the Arab oud... so there was definately influence from the Medieval Arab world, regarding musical instruments. I will be uploading new videos regularly, so please don't forget to like and subscribe so as to be notified of new uploads. Many thanks! 🙂

      Oh, my bad! I'm coming from Guitar-centric based music. I have, for couple of years now, been listening to lots of Classical music after been dappling with contemporary music and progressive rock. My bad on the "plucking", I generally thought that plucking also meant striking, but coming to think of it, it's guitar-centric use. I haven't been too much into Claviochord, but I guess it has caught me by charm and struck me with a question, if there are any contemporary composers who makes contemporary music out of it?.. A bit of a far fetched question, though I hear potentials in classical instruments having a comeback. It's an interesting instrument, and personally, it has taken me a long time to finally have a listen to them. Thank you for the awesome answer!

      The plucking of strings isn't a bad assumption, actually, because harpsichord strings are indeed plucked. To some extent, the clavichord is probably more qualified to be the ancestor of the modern piano, as with both instruments, the strings are hit. Clavichords tended to be more for private home use and are not loud enough for concerts, unless using a modern microphone and amp. Harpsichords, with their plucked strings are much louder, take up more room, and are more ideal as concert instruments. Clavichords were the ideal private practice instruments for musicians and composers, in the 17th century. You can't really guage the loudness of my instrument from my videos, but its volume is about right for a modest private livingroom

      Beethoven definately wrote it for his early piano or pianoforte and I had to adapt it somewhat. Also I'm an amateur hobbyist, as is mentioned on my channel description, so I'm sure a professional, who would probably charge you for listening, could make it sound better on this instrument. Great performance! Out of curiosity: there are a few parts that are often played much faster, but you chose to play them quite slowly. Was that necessary due to a limitation of the instrument itself, or was it done for some other reason? Thank you!

    • @clavichord
      @clavichord หลายเดือนก่อน

      Thank you. You may notice I made some adaptations. Beethoven really wrote it for the pianoforte, and I can only sustain notes on my clavichord (and harpsichords) by keeping notes pressed longer. Also I had to adapt the final passage due to shortage of notes on my keyboard. Beethoven liked to use all octaves avaiable on his pianos. The faster parts were played slower than on professional recordings more due to me being an amateur player than limitation of the instrument. My playing ability is "work in progress" also, I must admit to being more at home with baroque keyboard techniques of pre-1750s. I do enjoy trying to play post baroque and hope to try out some more Beethoven, Haydn, Mozart soon.

      @@zhukant That's kind of you to say so. When trying to play piano era works, it becomes impossible to completely stay true to the score and adaptation becomes necessary in order for the piece to "work" and sound as best as possible on clavichords and harpsichords, although Beethoven's early published keyboard works were marketed at both harpsichord and pianoforte players
