    hay buddy, you do a lot of 4 cylinders bikes with CV carbs that you modify the exhaust and air filters, have you had any trouble with low rpm slide flutter, 6 months i've been fighting with this problem on my 1980 yamaha xj650, with hitachi carbs, i've tried every trick i know and everything else i can think of including adding restictors to exhaust to increase back pressure but nothing works, it's gotten so bad the bike can only be ridden at night because the problem is so bad in the heat of the day, any idea's?

    • @coolmonkeymc8268
      @coolmonkeymc8268 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      You may have not seated your rubber diaphragms correctly.Once your carb top is on raise your slide then while holding the slide in the up position cover the air port that accesses to the top of the diaphram. With a good seal possibly from your thumb covering the air inlet let the slide go and see how it travels.If it goes down fast your diaphragm tops are nor seated or you have tears .I also pull my springs out a little before installing the diaphrams. Over time they can get weak and lose some resiliance. Hope this helps.

      @@coolmonkeymc8268 it's a mixture problem, I’m old school like you and in my 40 + years doing this the rule has always been your main jets go +4 when running pods or stacks and another +4 for open exhaust then subtract 1 for every 1000ft of elevation which is 2000ft in my situation, then for pilot jets it’s +1 for every +3 in mains. With all that said in my case the jetting should be 116 for mains and 42 for pilots but at those numbers the bike runs so sloppy fat that it causes the slides to bounce uncontrollably making the bike totally unrideable it’s these Hitachi carbs, unlike other CV carbs these Hitachi’s have no accelerator pumps, power valves, adjustable needles or diaphragms to adjust to compensate for the modifications even the ignition timing is fixed on this bike. After months of trying every combination possible Yesterday I went back to the stock size jets and added a restrictor in the exhaust and all the slide flutter disappeared, rideability wise the bike is perfect but mechanically the bike is running lean as hell even with going down 2 heat ranges on the plugs After months of dicking with this, 2 complete sets of rebuild kits and trying every trick I’ve learned in the last 40 years of twisting throttles I am back to square one and have no idea how to fix this problem other then spending an obscene amount of money for dyno time which this old bike isn’t worth….

    i really like loud sound of heavy bikes , but one thing in my heart always stop me using heavy sound silencers is that there might be people , ill or old people sleeping or taking rest in their homes . they might be disturbed by the loud sound . that's why i avoid running such loud bikes .

      I agree. Usually, around here, it's Harleys and Ford Mustangs. Sometimes you can't even have a conversation outside until they pass. Hey mate, this is a nice build! I’ve restored an xs750 myself (and am still at it.. it’s a marone kinda colour and I painted the engine a dark green- it looks better than that description sounds! Anyway, I did a top end rebuild (first time I’ve done that) and would you believe it went off without a hitch, runs great. But after blowing two batteries courtesy of a mechanical regulator which I’m now replacing, and finding that if it sits for more than a week the start jets struggle.. I’ve come to the conclusion these triples are very temperamental! Would you agree?

    • @jdc2597
      @jdc2597 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thank you for taking the time to message us. I, personally, don't like this posted bike at all. It all started with someone else's idea, and then the guy bailed half way through it. He's a really nice guy, but he hangs window treatments for a living, and I'm sure he does a really good job, but you really can't extrapolate that into customizing a bike. Nothing about this bike was really worth mentioning, but I will tell you, do not attempt to put a mono-shock on one of these. I told him that it would not work. These motors are very heavy and the shock has no room to slant forward or even to try to use a dual setup. It is very tight for space. I had to end up putting a stopper on that shock. It had about a 1/8 inch of play. If not, on deceleration it would slam down to the ground. As far as your slow jets clogging, I don't remember if this model had the Hitachi carburetors. I think those were the ones that had the pressed in jets. You can try using a first string from a guitar to clean through there. That may help. Thanks again.

    • @RicksGarage
      @RicksGarage 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@jdc2597 - I was going to message about the shock setup - do you know what the shock itself came from?

    • @jdc2597
      @jdc2597 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@RicksGarage As I mentioned in the last message, a mono shock set-up does not work. The shock itself is irrelevant. Other than length of the shock or length of travel. The spring is another matter. That is a Hypercoil 1800 lb. tension, if I remember correctly. All you had to do was sit on the bike and it would slam directly to the ground. Two things causing that. One is the motor on that bike was one of the heaviest in production that year, other than the XS1100. Second, there's really no room to slant your shock forward. When you have a close to a straight up and down set-up, you're giving too much axis advantage to the swingarm.

    I absolutely love this bike build. And that engine paint, WOW!! Looks like it is dripping wet. In another video you said you used High Temp Urethane, what specific product is that? I'd love to try it myself. And why did you choose HTU vs. High Temperature Enamel? Thank you!

    • @jdc2597
      @jdc2597 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thank you for taking the time to message us. I wish I could tell you more on the qualities of the paint, but that was on the close-out shelf from the paint supply that I get my products from, so I don't remember any particulars. But, as far as the color, personally, I think the Goldwing motor is the only one that you can get away with using the color wheel. For some reason, any other motor would look gimmicky. Maybe it's the flat 4 design. You probably have a good point on your choice of product. As I said, it was on the clearance table, so I tried it.

      It's a good thing I didn't know that. I wouldn't have done it. LOL. Honestly, I'm trying to remember what I did. I had the 4 into 1 hanging in my shop for years. I don't know what brand it was, and when I redid the carbs, I don't remember if I changed the main jets on it. I remember changing all of the air cut-off valves. One of the biggest things is you can bench tune your carbs pretty close to being right, before you install. Back out about 3 turns on the mixture screws. Then, with your carbs level on the bench, set your idle to where the butterflies barely open. Then, get a can of Brakleen with the straw and squirt in an even amount on all 4, and watch the run-out. With a little practice, you can get very good at that and, then, adjust your butterflies accordingly. Of course, all that means nothing if your carb holders aren't air tight. A little cheat you can do: You can put washers in your air pods, common hardware store type, for reducers, to draw more mixture into your motor. You will have to buy a step bit, and drill the center hole a little bigger, if need be. I have been doing that for years, until I recently found out those are actually on the market, and they call them lollipops. Who'd have thought. One last thing. Those carbs have pumper jets in all 4. Make sure those are working. That has a lot to do with your throttle response.

      It's under where the center stand used to be. You want at least a rating of 110 CCA.
