If you’re new to my channel, my name is Koen Cramer. I’m a pianist, teacher, and creator of the Secret Piano Method-a simple, fun way to improvise on the piano without ever needing to read sheet music or chords. I’ve spent over a decade developing this method to help anyone (yes, anyone!) create beautiful music, whether they’re a beginner or experienced player.
How I got here…
7: Started playing piano after seeing my first keyboard in a music shop.
15: First gig during Christmas
18: Played my first paid gig at a restaurant, where I realized I could improvise for hours without sheet music.
23: First gig in a Michelin restaurant.
28: Developed the Color Blocks Method to simplify piano improvisation for everyone.
29: Opened my online piano school to teach this method to students around the world.
Today: My online school has grown into a vibrant community of learners sharing their progress, competing in fun challenges, and creating amazing music together.
What is the Color Blocks Method?
It’s a pattern-based way to play the piano. By learning 5 simple “color blocks” (Red, Blue, Yellow, Green, Purple), you can create endless music and even blend popular songs like “Canon in D” and “Can’t Help Falling in Love.” No sheet music. No chords. Just creativity and beginner friendly.
How to get started…
Watch this video to see the method in action.

Start improvising and making music you love!
Today, thousands of people are learning piano in a completely new way-faster, easier, and way more fun. Whether you’re looking to play for yourself, perform for an audience or even want to earn money, I want to help you succeed.
To everyone out there: It’s never too late to start. Progress is progress, no matter how small.

I'm rather surprised how long it is taking me to get smooth a simple tune like "Interstellar". I will sometimes even forget which note I'm supposed to hit. I have found that slowing down has helped to eliminate much of the frustration, but I want to play it at a normal speed, and I want it now! Ha ha!

Great stuff once again. Mark 59 in Oregon, USA. Been messing with piano for years, guitar for 6 years. I really enjoyed how your color block ideas simplify harmonizing. I understand theory really well, but would like for you to explain when you play a melody, which note in the melody would get a new chord, or change start locations for a color block. Thank you.

As I've aged I've found that playing the guitar is more difficult and a little painful. The piano is easier on my hands. I saw that the Red Color Block uses the Blue Block pattern, so I never addressed the Blue Color Block, I just started with the Red Color Block. Perhaps I should visit this Blue Block to see if I want to use it for some rudimentary songs.

First video i saw was very interesting and intriguing. This straight up revealing. Your method not only good for piano players, but for digital producers who use MIDI only instruments. What i do when i make techno? I make a bunch of cool patterns and mix and match them for 5-8 min ocasionally slowing down. speeding up and changing dynamics.... This is EXACTLY the same, but with a piano. You just shuffle patterns around, transposing them to different apropriate keys and paint a melody on top. In a way it's more confusing in DAW coz you can't just shift your hand to different position, you actually need to adjust chord to min and maj manually, but hey! In MIDI we still need to spend alot of time strumming notes and adjusting velocity, so it's not a problem. You can even encoroporate modes and chromatism immediatley coz... you know, you adjust your notes anyway so why wait? Not like it would be so much harder to do dorian instead of minor or lydian instead of major... I hope you will go far, and your method gets recognition coz it's cool and rad and convinient :)

At 3:10, it sounded a lot better. Was that because you were using the sustain pedal? Did you also include some varied speed and dynamics? Then you made it sound even better by adding your right hand to the mix. It would sure be nice to see both your hands and also the keyboard you show while you play. I imagine software like that must be too expensive at this time to get it.

9:40 I just want to point out that when a musician says, "There are no rules," they are often saying it more to themselves in the same way that an athlete says, "Pain is just a signal." Music is learned through the exploration of the boundaries that define different genres. Eventually, that training develops an intuition, and realizing the full potential of that intuition involves removing those learned boundaries. Just to be clear, it should not be taken as good advice before years of training have erected mental barriers.

    • @koencomposer
      @koencomposer 11 วันที่ผ่านมา

Hey, thanks for your valuable comment! I totally agree, and I'm learning so much from insights like yours. I think the reason I say something like 'there are no rules' is because, for beginners, the first step is often just believing in themselves. Some people struggle with self-doubt, troubling believes ("I have no talent") or didn’t have the opportunity to study an instrument in the past. My goal is to create a positive, encouraging environment to support their learning process which is something they may not have had before. Does that make sense?

@@koencomposer I've never seen a farmer with ALL his fingers gone. Maybe 1, 2, or 3. But your ideas make playing the piano possible for them.

      @@samuelmoss9487 Thanks so much man! C - G - C - G - E - G - C - G 5 - 2 - 1 - 2 - 1 - 2 - 1 - 2 (Pinky - Index - Thumb - Index - Thumb - Index - Thumb - Index) The second time thumb you move your thumb from C to E. Does that make sense?

This could also be a good way to turn a classical repertoire of 20 minutes into 2 hours. - 5-minute classical piece that people recognize - 20-minute interlude of arpeggios that don't demand too much attention - 5-minute break - Repeat

Yeah, definitely good idea to make a balance between recognizable songs and improvisation!
