Land Rover Defender Noico Sound Deadening
get rid of that moreonic music.. absolutely ridiculous noise.
Sorry you didn’t like the music 🎵
Great job, Chris! The Defender TD5 originally had a metal guard around the fuel filter - might be worth getting one (about £40) ;)
Thanks. Yes, I was in the process of sanding down and respecting the fuel filter housing guard.
@@roaming_with_rona Nice one! 👍
Should use the new Lifepo4 batteries. They have full capacity instead of AGM which only 50% capacity. The Lifepo4 battery also last longer at around 6000 cycles.
Thanks for the tip. Will look into it when we change the batteries next 👍🏽
hey, which item did you purchase exactly on the xmor trim website? :)
Hey Dominic, I ordered my carpet kit from LR Parts. They are a stockist for Exmoor Trim. Here’s the link: www.lrparts.net/da4911-front-carpet-set-r380-land-rover-defender-1994-2006-for-rhd-vehicles-only.html
@@roaming_with_rona thanks crhis :)
Magazine you mentioned is out of business..sounded like great info
Yeah it was helpful. Not sure if you can access the digital catalogue anywhere but they always had helpful information
220 is smooth enough for primer...need something for primer to catch onto
Thanks. Appreciate you watching 😊
bought this same snorkel from ebay but it didn't come with instructions! Seller pointed me to this video, but it's hard to see how you mounted the bracket towards (mid section of snorkel to car window frame)
Hey Ben, I bolted the bracket onto the snorkel first to see where it lined up with the frame of the windscreen. Then I drilled some pilot holes before securing the bracket with self tapping screws. I got my snorkel from LR parts and they sent out installation instructions. They might have a pdf version if you email them. Hope this helps!
@@roaming_with_rona thank you so much! This helped loads! I pop riveted mine instead of self-tapping. Cheers for the help
Love to see the full camper walk around if you get the chance to finish the video. The build looks great! I've used some of your ideas in my own design that i'm building now. Thanks for these videos - really helpful 😁👍
Quick question - did you use 12mm or 18mm ply?
Thanks James. Yes should hopefully get a full walk around soon! If you have any questions during the build phase let me know 😃
Delighted for you 🎉
Thank you 😊
Mate lovely job what size tires are you running please ?
Thanks! Running 265/75 R16s on the defender.
That cheer at the end 😂 well done mate
Thanks. It’s frustrating when the first solution doesn’t work but it’s a great feeling when you figure it out!
Deadly video man, could ya give us the specs on what tyres ya have in her, they look well
Thanks Justin. I have BF Goodrich Mud Terrain LT265/75 R16s on the defender
Any new videos in the pipeline?
Yes! As winter ends and spring begins we will have Rona out for some adventures and some projects! Thanks for staying tuned!!
Hi Chris, loving the videos, quick question - is there seals that go between the tube and side panels and more between the side panels and roof?
Thanks Alan. Yes there is a foam seal between the tub and side panels and another between the side panels and the roof. These don’t guarantee water ingress though so I’ve sealed the seems with a clear silicone.
Hi, do you still have the EGR valve on or it's closed? Good job for the snorkel...
Hey Raffo, I haven’t closed off the EGR valve but I do have the kit if I decide to.
@@roaming_with_rona better to close it, engine will thanks a lot!
Nice job on the camper. Can I ask what type of carpet did you use on the interior of the cab?
Thanks Jonathan. It’s a 4 way stretch carpet
What was the finish like after using the Kurust? Wondering if that might be a good temporary fix until getting the time to fully repaint?
Hi Patrick, it makes the rusted areas a solid surface but they recommend that you paint it after.
What we do with them floor panels (apart from chucking them in the bin) is to use them as templates to cut new floors out of ally checker-plate - then bin every fastener LR fitted in favour of riv-nuts & M8 metric bolts - so next time you have to unbolt the floor, it's a doddle using just a 13mm socket on an impact. We do the same for the seat-box - bin all the daft fastners & replace them with M6/M8 metric bolts into riv-nuts. That leaves you just needing a 10mm, a 13mm socket & a power ratchet to get the entire lower interior out, which takes about 10 minutes. If you coat the bolts with Vaseline (yes, vaseline) then you also benefit from the "they will never corrode in place" aspect. Lidl sell knock-off vaseline for about a quid a jar - buy some, use it on bolts - thank me later. You can also use the cheapo vaseline on anything else you'd not fancy going rusty - it works great, isn't dear & is also not manky to use. Brush it on with a brush - marvel at how petroleum jelly stops rust dead in its tracks. Ideal for around windscreens btw - works great, try it. A "Top-Tip" is to also bin the old LR seatbelt mounts & replace them with heavier steel plate - the LR ones are flimsy as feck - chunk - I made a template so we can bend up a new bracket on the brake in no time at all that fits right in in place of the garbage originals. The originals will usually also be rusted to dust - and they're what hold you in when the SHTF... chances are if most owners glanced at the state of the seat-belt mounts, they'd be afraid to hang a picture off them, let alone a seatbelt.. usually it's only the skimpy ally panel that is actually holding the belt unit in place - the original brackets have usually totally dissolved. Not ideal - fix that - top-tip. Even on ostensibly "not rusty" ones, the seat-belt mounts will be absolute crud, have a close look, you will see. They are the first thing to go to corrosion - and they're not a thing you want going... If you don't want the new ally floors to sound like a Scottish marching band as you drive along, a cheap hack is to use heavy torch-on membrane on the underside - it has the weight, the sound absorption & the "Glues on easily using heat" properties to really quiet them down so they are civilised - the same material can be used in loads of places to make things quieter - Upside is a big roll is cheap as chips & saves you having to get absolutely raped buying little bits of "sound deadening" material. The only other "Good Hack" that springs to mind is to pop along to CarpetRight & buy a few meters of their boggo black ribbed office carpet - it is ideal for lining the inside of everything as it is super flexible, glues down very well, is durable & covers all them awkward shapes your LR has on the inside of its cab. It also makes for an ideal headliner material. Luckily it is also cheaper than chips. Thank me later. :-)
Thanks for that James. Will take this all into consideration for any future requirements 👍🏽
What a lovely job Chris! I’ll be following the exact ideas as yours when I start doing it this spring. Thanks for sharing. I am in Ireland with a 110 too. Best of luck!
Thanks! Let me know if you’ve any questions on layout or dimensions. Enjoy the conversion process 😊
Lots of talking
Thanks for the feedback. Is it a positive or negative review 😊
Those poxy screws are a misery to remove, consider replacing with stainless steel. Worthy of note, the fibreglass tunnel should sit on top of the floor plates.....
Like you’re build nice and simple. One suggestion for your channel its only my opinion. When you have a product your installing list it in your description area with a location someone can buy or open a Amazon account. What that will do is give you a opportunity to make some extra money from Amazon sales when people on purchase that product from your Amazon store you have. Just a thought. Look forward to the next video. 👍
Some rot in the same places as mine.... How are your rear seat mounts for galvanic corrosion?
Hey! Yes, we did. You can see that video here: Land Rover Defender Noico Sound Deadening th-cam.com/video/WkPAG3yECBk/w-d-xo.html
In battery compartment underground the seat you should have grommets facing to the back of the car. They are not pass trough, but drill it. Thats how I guided wires in my defender to the fuse box in same location
Thanks Sladem. That’s a good idea too
Looks amazing bro!
Cheers Broski!!! It’s been a long road but it’s come together nicely.
Just the job I’m planning on doing! Good shout on the krust I’ll have to get some of that
Thank Dan!
This is coming along nicely! I'm about to start working on my kitchen area in my Defender camper. Did you screw the shelf to the roof's edge?
Thanks Eric! I’m really enjoying your build progress too. Yes the shelf is screwed through the existing holes where the roof and side panels meet
Ohh thanks man! Yes, I was thinking about using those holes as a support for the shelf as well. Ok, have fun with the build. Cheers!
I would suggest making access point to fuel pump in the floor. You won't need to drop fuel tank when it fails, and make replacement cheaper, easier and faster :)
Appreciate this. Actually having an issue with our fuel pump at the moment and it would be easier if we had an access hatch. Definitely something for me to work on. Thanks
I think you should reconsider exhaust location. In my defender I have eberspacher D2 exhaust in same location and sometimes, I get some white smoke inside my defender. Mostly when it was not used for some long periods of time.
Thanks Sladem! I’ll run it like this for a little while and see how it goes. Good to look out for though.
That’s cool. Would you consider doing this for me? Or your not business ??
As much as I’d love to, I’m not doing this as a business. I’ve just been doing this project in my spare time.
Hey chris! How did you find DIY respraying the rear of the defender? what did you use to sand prep and paint ?
Hey Joseph, I’d say for a first attempt I was happy with the results. It’s not as flat as the doors which were done in a booth with good airflow, but the orange peel could probably be worked out with a good paint detail in the future. I sanded from 80 grit up to 320 grit before applying a 1K Etalon Epoxy Primer, I then sanded from 400 up to 800 before applying a 2k Capci high gloss paint
Looks great, Chris. Are you based in Belfast (I am)? Fitting out mine, would love some more tips. Part 2? 😬
Hey Aaron, I’m based in Portadown. Would be more than happy to share any tips. Part two is coming. Just editing the final little sections. Might even get it done this evening.
@@roaming_with_rona Nice one, looking forward to watching it!
Nice work Chris. I need to build out my Defender this summer. So will be watching. I still have to use 2 of my 2nd row seats, but this is definitely giving me ideas. As a side note, when you started cutting with the hand saw, I was wanting to send you power tools 😂😂. Glad to see you have some! Cheers.
Thanks! Glad it’s giving you some ideas. Will always accept power tools if you’re offering 😂😂
Can't wait to see how this turns out, just became your 500th sub for it!
ah 501st*
Thanks for joining the journey! Should have the next episode out next week 🤞🏼
Looks great. I did similar job in my lr defender some time ago. Remeber about investing in door seals, also in front door bottom ones, otherwise you will notice dust all over the dark carpet :)
Thanks! I have bottom seals ready to be fitted. Did you fit yours to the sill or the bottom of the door?
@@roaming_with_rona Im thinking about them, ALR6250, but first i need to solve issues with my doors :)
How is the Noico sound deadening holding up?
It has worked really well. I’d definitely recommend it. And it’s durable. I’ve had the footwell carpets out for a while and the noico is holding up with me jumping in and out.
Your camper conversion is coming along nicely! I'm currently working on my Defender camper as well. I used an old pizza box for the weird corners instead of foam 😂 Good luck with the build man! 😎
Thanks!
Doing any job on a Defender takes so much time. Doing something like this gives you so much satisfaction. It makes you feel like its worth doing. If that makes sense. Mines going away soon to have the footwell and bulkhead welded. Once its back I'll be doing the same as you. Cant wait to see the transformation.
Great job 👏
Thanks!!
Nice job, did I hear you say it’s stone chip paint?
Thanks Keith! Yes, it’s an autotek stone guard paint on the inside of the wheels and autotek satin black on the front face of the wheels.
@@roaming_with_rona ahh that’s great, I’ve a spare wheel carrier and a spare set of boosts that need some love! Will see who does Autotek near Banbridge. You’ve done a great job on Rona. 👏👏👏👏
@@keithgordon639 I get most of my paint and consumables from AC Components in Portadown if there isn’t anywhere in Banbridge. Most auto body and parts stores should stock it though!

Hi Mate, what grades of sand paper did you use
Hey Joseph, started with a 80 grit, 120, 240 then primed, followed the priming with 400 & 600 grit before spraying the paint. The more time you spend on the prep, the nicer finish you’ll get 👍🏽
Hi Chris brill channel do you have the link for the snorkel please

@@roaming_with_rona many thanks Chris :)
What's the code for that paint? Looks lovely. I'll hopefully be starting my own defender project this year and it's originally blue on the logbook.
I don’t have a paint code for this. I brought a panel to my local auto paint shop and then scanned it with a paint diagnostic scanner and pulled the colour match from that. I’ll look out the colour sheet for paint make up and let you know
Hi Chris what deadening did you you's please and how much did you you's for your 4 doors Re,dave 🏴
Hey Dave, I used a 2mm Noico sound deadening. They also make a 4mm version which is more like a closed cell foam. I don't have an exact amount I'm afraid as I used what I had left over from sound deadening the entire defender. It comes in a box of sheets that equate to 3.4sqm. I'd say you'd maybe use somewhere between 1.5 - 2sqm for the doors, but I could also be way off. A box of the stuff would definitely cover your use, plus you'd have extra for other panels. It makes a huge difference to the roof in particular. Hope that helps, but just shout if you'd like more info. How much insulation (thickness) did you put down?
On the floor and seat boxes we put down a 2mm noico sound deadening this allowed a very neat fit of the carpet but we also have a 9mm thick acoustic foam matt that covers the foot wells, which doesn’t fit as well.
Hello, I recently discovered your channel. This is very interesting for me because I also want to fit out my Defender. Too bad English is difficult for me. Can you tell me what materials you use: - black insulation in video 06 - silver insulation in video 09 - purple insulator in video 09. Thank you in advance and good luck with your arrangements. Michel
Hey Mitchi, thanks for watching! - The black insulation is a 2mm noico sound deadening. It’s a self adhesive acoustic lining to prevent the panels from reverberating noise into the vehicle. I bought this off Amazon. - The silver insulation is a 10mm self adhesive reflective closed cell foam. This also came from Amazon. - The purple insulation is a 10mm XPS rigid board that we bought from www.theunderfloorheatingstore.com I hope this is helpful. Let me know if you have any other questions
