How are you, mate? I'm just a comix lover from the U.K. who loves your channel (and all things Crumb, of course) and I just wanted to say thanx for all of your great videos. I haven't heard of some of these artists either, like Blanquet, so it's also an education for me... Could I ever need any more from a channel???!!! Perfect content for me lol Huge respects and love from England x
Thanks, man! I'm glad somebody had the guts to say it.
He did a cover for older mad magazine in early fifties
I realized that when I was editing the video, he did the Face on the Floor in issue #10 before the famous Life parody cover on #11
Crumb portrays the truth, so you see the truth as it was. I grew up with this alongside of the reality of the world. My advice for you is to realize that just because of the downsides there wasn't upsides. Everything is a sacrifice. You live on the shoulders of giants. You kind of suggest that your left leaning idealism is superior. I'm in my 60s and I have many friends who swam a river and climbed a wall to get here. Every single decision of any worth is made at the top. Everyone else has to live it. Here we are mocking a stereo type White man. He lives the life made for him. He will take all the abuse about the system he has no voice in. Now I'm watching you. You are obviously a bright person who does not want to harm anyone but you now live within the confines of what is now constructed around you. I don't even have to have the volume on to know what your going to say. You really are more a automaton than you understand. You have become the white man different clothes, different times, white man says this, cow goes mooo.
I loved Krinkles. Thanks great channel.
Wow! You went deep.
Oh dear ol' Basil. I love me some toons. I know far, far too much about old toons and toonists.
Well don't start a TH-cam channel; there's enough sharks in the tank already
Coulda done without the HIGHLY offensive statement "CULT" I guess you just like to denigrate other humans
Do you need help?
@@LittleCozyNostril You ruined the video for me with your snide comment. I didn't click on your video for a quick dissertation of your beliefs. Thumbs down. I'll stand with 7K
@@paincorp2 Have fun, guys
Aaagh! Great book. I love Wolverton and have covered this book as well as some of his other stuff a few times. This is one of the best things I've seen about him 😊
It's great! I did see your vid, but I figured it had been long enough
From u.k. I have about half of what you have. But why dont you have the bible of filth? Just curious. Great channel
I have everything that's in it in different books. I've checked
@@LittleCozyNostril Good I’m glad! Thought it might have been censored, you know how it goes! It’s I’ve said I have a bit of Crumb myself But it wasn’t the cash, I just decided to stop! I’m like that all in on something then stop! I’m keeping hold of it though. Take care. Thanks for getting back to me! Unlike many plumbers!😂
I had stopped myself... Then I started this series
Can someone please tell me the name of the song in the opening? Pretty good video/series.
Thanks, it gets better as it goes on I think. The song is Skeleton Rag by The Hoosier Hotshots, but it's an abridged version I found on an old Vitaphone (or similar) short sound film.
@@LittleCozyNostril Thank you very much, im very excited for the next chapters.
@@matheusalves9421 Great! I'm assuming you've already seen the other 18 episodes.
Is this a better collection than ‘The Original Art of Basil Wolverton’?
The Original Art book is bigger, a nicer presentation, has a wider variety of his art styles and genres, as well as more information and examples of his process. For some people's purposes that would be the better book. It's also more than double the price (results vary in the secondary market.) Wolvertoons is like a trade paperback that collects most of his ugly drawings in one place. So it's more specialized. I have about a half dozen Wolverton books, and maybe another half dozen books with a good sampling of Wolverton in them, and The Original Art of Basil Wolverton is probably the one I look at the least.
I bought this book for 30. I really wanted the original art of basil wolverton. But I settled for this one and was pleasantly surprised by the amount of art is in here. Mine is also on its last limbs.
It's a shame it hasn't been reprinted in a nicer edition. I would probably upgrade given the opportunity
How could those snoid guys have a car? But also there's something on the license plate - is that Porterzebie or whatever you say? (The Mad thing.)
It actually changes panel to panel. At first it's FOO, which was Robert and Charles' MAD-clone fanzine. Then it says Potrzebie, then ouch, and then swearing glyphs (jarns and nittles I think.) Moy podcast is actually podrzebie with a "D"
Great background music - like you have a dedicated music producer. Or maybe a seminated one (seminal?).
I just have a huge digital collection of pre WWII music of all genres.
when is the next casually crumb episode?
I'll get another proper episode out before Christmas I'm sure
A great looking book - now I have to go hunt for it!
Good luck!
Didn't know you were published in MAD. That's solid. Baby, hat's off.
You know, I brag and I brag about it because there's always someone who doesn't know yet.
The two two things I remember most about the film Crumb are his aesthetic brother passing a string and R drawing a quick caricature of a guy in a restaurant. I love seeing him up close and personal. I wonder what happened to his daughter. I was kind of worried about her when they moved to France.
All of this is answered in other episodes of the show
Like Frank Zappa, nothing was sacred or safe from Crumb's pointy poison pen
His favorite music was the very first jazz-blues orchestras and bands like King Oliver. Of course they were mostly Black.
I think this is an oversimplification. Of course he does love 1920s and 30s jazz, but he also loves blues, country, jug bands, novelty, Hawaiian, etc. from the period as well. It's worth checking out John Hennigan's Old Time Radio Show online where Crumb is a frequent guest showcasing his collection of 78s including bizarre stuff like French, Turkish, and all other kinds of ethnic records from the period and into the early 50s. To your point about so many of these performers being black, again I broadly agree, but I don't think that absolves Crumb of the accusations of racism. I'm not trying to be judgemental or anything, clearly I'm a huge Crumb fan, I just find his work more interesting when grappling with his work honestly.
Lil Cozy, You have almost reached the promise land of TRUTH. You need to de-Howard Zinn your understanding of America's history and self-image first, though. I don't think Crumb is as unAmerican as you think or as you are.
You should hear the self-identified communist Robert Crumb talk about America!
Segrelles is one of the greats of Spanish illustration, always loved his Odyssey works, love that he's being recognized outside the spanish-speaking world. BTW, his name is pronounced "Vee-sen-teh Seh-gre-yes".
I'm into European comics which is why I've heard of him, but I didn't have any friends into European comics growing up which is why I haven't heard his name pronounced out loud before
Im pretty sure that the first few stories were re-printed in some of the early issues of Heavy Metal.
You might be right.
If you like this, check out Don Lawrence-era "Storm" and his "The Rise and Fall of the Trigan Empire" books. Also fully painted!
Oh yeah! I remember seeing some of that in Heavy Metal!
Absolutely staggering quality of artwork. I absolutely do not want to rag on modern digitally drawn comics, but the is something really captivating about these comics made in physical media and elevated from "mere" production into full-blown art pieces. "Every frame a painting", literally.
Yeah, I'm not broadly anti-digital either but there is an organic quality to hand drawn work that is so much better
Dude I forgot about this!!! Segrelles work has scape me I need this and I alway's forget nice vid!!
Glad I could help!
The stories are quite fun and have a self-parody touch to them, similar to Corben.
Corben art and stories are way more cerebral in my opinion. I agree that they're fun though. They just need to be taken in small doses.
@@LittleCozyNostril Agreed. Well, comparisons. I think I have read about 10 volumes of The Mercenary (not in English) back in the day. They're convincing pieces of world-building and the biofiction (the flying dragons) in particular, is original.
I read some incomplete stories here and there. Great artwork. Not enough dynamics.
I think what saves them is the brevity. Like if you got one of these stories in a Heavy Metal type mage with a bunch of other stuff you'd be thrilled.
Seh-greh-yes
I never would have gotten there.
Pure Trance video? I saw it on the shelf
I bought that for dirt cheap a few years back and I only read it once. I don't really know much about it. I actually thought Junko Mizuno was an American artist doing a manga style until just this minute! I'll keep it in mind
@@LittleCozyNostril She's from Japanese, she lived in the US and Canada though. She used to show her paintings at a gallery here in Toronto. I don't think she's done many comics recently. Maybe is just selling original artwork now? She has a trilogy children's Fairy Tales, her Little Mermaid and Cinderella are really good too. Pure Trance is trip. Especially for the time
Kyle you nut case! You saved my f___in’ life man!
I have that effect on people
Love this book! How'd I miss this one growing up?!!
I don't think the kids were supposed to know about this one
This is the most in-tune review I've ever heard someone do. Well done, consider me subscribed.
Thanks, but you wouldn't be saying that if I did any singing in it!
Here in Wisconsin, we have a private collector with at least 4 of his paintings, and I got to see them in an exhibition a few years ago. Very cool!
Neat. I saw one for sale a few days ago. It was way cheaper than I would have expected.
Unfortunately the truth that a horse is a horse of course of course and no one can talk to a horse of course, that is, of course, unless that horse is the famous Mr Ed, was not found out until years later
If he'd gone right to the source and asked the horse, he'd have received an answer that you'd have endorsed.
Protip: spending the first 10% of the video on intro music and begging for clicks isn't great.
I'm curating a more patient breed of viewer. Tik Tok might be more your speed.
@@LittleCozyNostril Respectfully, there's a difference between impatience and simply wanting to hear about the material advertised in the video's title without having to sit through irrelevant and unnecessary padding.
You're talking about waiting less than a minute to “hear about the material advertised” (which you can skip to.) What you call “irrelevant and unnecessary padding,” is stuff that I like in my videos and others; a little bit of flavour that sets the tone and brands the series. It's part of the reason I do these videos at all. I'm not charging you for this, and I'm not really sorry if you're not getting your slop as fast as you want it.
I dont know what part of youtube the algorythm let me today but I never expected nudity next to Dr Seuss so Ill stay watching if I am already here...
It was probably that goat I sacrificed
all blah blah blah and very little Crumb
Yeah, it's a video essay, dingus
Cool series man! 👍
Thanks man!
Amazing!! <3
Thank you!!
That was a real hoot - and Dr. Seuss is always a treat to see!
He's a Crumb-like genius
What is the song on the intrp?
It's an abridged recording of "Skeleton Rag" by The Hoosier Hotshots
