Replacing exhaust (MBRP to Roush)
Replaced stock 2018 Ford F150 exhaust with MBRP, 4 years later that system is rusted, rotted and failed. We will uninstall the MBRP and install the new Roush exhaust. Hear and see the difference.
Milling logs

How to fell a tree
How to fell a tree safely and properly using the science of tree felling preparation and plan.
Mechanical advantage (felling plan 4 of 8)
Mechanical advantage will always be required when a tree has a back lean against the target. In order to overcome gravitational influence we will need to manipulate the tree weight over and past the center of the stump. With many different options we discuss the power of chain saw felling wedges, calculate their advantage and number required, lean about the segmentation of trees, and how to suc...
Leans (felling plan 3 of 8)
If a tree is attempted to be felled with a chain saw and leans are not considered it will be difficult to direct accurately and possible not move at all. We will discuss off setting our aim to the target when considering left/right lean and how much mechanical advantage we may need to bring the tree down in front/back lean. We will show where and how to calculate the leans required to accuratel...
Face notch (felling plan 5 of 8)
The face notch is comprised of two cuts, and defines the direction of fall and the front of the hinge. There are three basic constructions of notches for chain saw felling; Humboldt, conventional, and open face. We will discuss advantages and disadvantage of each kind.
Target (felling plan 2 of 8)
Directional chain saw tree felling requires a target. Only from that target can we calculate the required leans and mechanical advantage to have a successful and accurate fell. Once a target is chosen all following calculations and and considerations are taken in relation to that point. We will also learn how to find the height of the tree as well as inspect the lay for previously unknown consi...
Back cut (felling plan 7 of 8)
The back cut can be made in many ways. We will discuss some advantages and disadvantages of several in relation to the types of leans trees have. We will also cover barber-chair potential, release cuts, location, and bore cutting.
Hazards and obstacles (felling plan 1 of 8)
As we approach the tree we must consider if the job is safe to perform. Through observing things that can harm us and things that we can cause harm to we will better understand our safety concerns with chain saw tree felling before we begin. Sometimes, these items can be moved, sometimes marked, and sometimes we need to change our plan until it is safe to proceed.
Hinge (felling plan 6 of 8)
The hinge is the most important set up in a chain saw felling plan. It is what keeps the tree to the stump and offers direction, even against lean as the tree travels to the ground. We will discuss location, size, and how to achieve the best control when setting up a hinge.
Emergency response preparation (felling prep 10 of 10)
We will discuss things to consider before you head into the woods and use a chainsaw as it relates to emergency preparedness. This will include communication, vehicle preparation, and appropriate first aid kits.
Stump reading
After every chain saw fell a stump remains. This written history serves as a tool on what took place, how did it go, and what the sawyer knew. We can all learn from the stumps of others and ourselves if you know how to read them. Join us to unlock the secrets of reading stumps.
Retreat path (felling plan 8 of8)
The last step in the plan is how and when to move away from the stump when the tree begins to fall. The most dangerous place to be when chain saw tree felling is at the stump. Preparing the correct path and achieving a safe distance will increase your safe felling practice.

Mbrp makes this exhaust system with one of three grades of metal, you probably had the cheapest version - aluminized may be or the mid grade, so nothing new. That looks like the street version from what I hear

Great garage engineering video. I bought a diode package from some outfit in one of the northern states a few years back that did this upgrade on my '06 500 Polaris. Can't find them any more online for a buddy.

That startup was crazy I had no idea the Roush exhaust was that loud. I currently have a Flowmaster super 40 muffler. It's been only 3 weeks and I'm already tired of the low RPM drone. It doesn't drone at all on the highway though. So now I have an unboxed AWE cat back in my living room

I always think it is tough to judge exhausts sound by internet video. And then we are expected to make a big $ purchase that will impact our daily drive with such little information. Only thing to do is jump in the deep end and find out I guess. I liked the sound and look of the MBRP. It didn’t last long and the drone was mildly annoying. The Roush had an awesome cold start and I was pleasantly surprised its reasonably quiet on the highway. I have yet to tow with it and time will tell on the quality. So many more options to try, thank you for sharing your experience too.

Mine is much harder , replacing the cab , it will fix the rust like new ..its better than making payments on a 80k truck ...overpriced junk

    • @TreeReaper

That’s the issue with these trucks. The mechanicals are good but the body gives out. New truck payments are not appealing. Plus it’s fun to try and learn a skill to keep the vehicles on the road longer. I agree do what you can you help the body and avoid vehicle payments as long as possible.

any rust left in not chemically treated (not just spray painted) will restart the process! there is a good follow question, how long? EDIT: i'm experimenting on a buick i used krud kutterrust converter THAN por15, the down side was lack of time and not cleaning the residual krud kutter off first. though the por15 took two to three weeks to get off my hands so it may stick.

Not shown in the video but we did prep all surfaces with rust by removing what we could then treating it with aspho acid surface prep. Time will tell how long it lasts.

My pleasure. The more knowledge that is made publicly available the safer we can all be. I also plan to add to this series a few more items. Then make some maintenance videos. And just this morning, talking with another instructor, perhaps a variety of bucking techniques for different compression situations. Stay tuned.

Thank you for your kind words. My hope is to provide the education that I wish would have had when I first started. Knowing the proper way to fell trees will make using a chain saw less hazardous. I plan to release a chainsaw maintainance series later this summer as well. Stay tuned.

Great suggestion. I’ve tried yellow in the past (they seem especially popular in shooting spots) but I just couldn’t get used to how they change the color of everything. Many people enjoy them though.

I will be uploading videos next week on the felling plan where you will see how these concepts play out. I started cutting trees very young and was not properly educated at that time. Knowing what I know now and through my experience I know I am lucky to be alive. Any time you can decrease risk through knowledge and skill we win. I have made these videos so we can all learn and grow in our abilities, spread the word. Thanks for your support.
