Noteworthy Decision: Why I Stopped Taking Notes in Med School
Hello friends!
Welcome back to another video, if you are new around here, I am Andreas and I am a International 4th year medical student at RSU in Latvia. In this video I am going to explain how and why I ditched note taking to save time and energy but still getting the same good results.
While the concept of note taking is not wrong its just very ineffective for the style of studying that I do. I also find the stress and effort to write good notes is just to much when I consider the results it yields!
I will let the video do the rest of the talking!

I think the new contracts are around 13000 euro a year but I am not 100% sure. Check out the RSU website for more!
@@mcgregormed thanks!
During a lecture, do you take the iPad in and out of its keyboard when taking notes/ typing, or do you not take the keyboard with you in the lectures? Thanks
I don't take notes buy typing, I only annotate slide with the pen.
What university is that?
Riga Stradins university :)
Super video - Thanks

Do I need an IPad for university? Or will I do okay with just the computer and paper?

How about for presentations can the ipad be used for presentations?
PowerPoint, Keynote and Google presentation are available
I used both in education as a mature student and in my oil and gas career of many years. I simply wasn’t able to get the iPad Pro M1 to work for me. Too many compromises. I’ve found that the best solution is to buy the best MacBook you can afford - I upgraded to the MacBook Pro as the MacBook Air was largely useless in hot Persian Gulf temps as it regularly overheated for me and I ended up with beach balls every day. The MacBook Pro 13 with its thermal cooling system is vastly superior in demanding environments. Not one beach ball despite daily temps up to 50 degrees C. I compliment the MacBook with the iPad mini. I just don’t think the iPad Pro is Pro enough. By name only but I find it to largely be an oversized toy with compromised software. If you need to get things done, a MacBook for me is the only sensible option. Students might get away with an iPad but I personally wouldn’t be taking the risk, especially with the silly prices.
Great video. I've been thinking of buying a new laptop as I'll start in university after summer break, but now i might opt for the ipad instead 😁 But one question, would you recommend getting an apple computer along with the ipad, or do you suppose a windows system works just as well?
Unfortunately this comparison has the same problem that every other comparison has which Is that you try to make the iPad a MacBook instead of letting the iPad be an iPad this would have been a lot more fair if you only bought the pencil because I think the Magic Keyboard limits the iPad because iPadOS is built for touch and in my opinion iPad Pro over MacBook Air everyday pro motion intuitive software and hardware and it feels like your interacting with the software directly
But if you have to write, you do need a keyboard
Where did u buy t shirt
Great video. Lot's of good information. Just a few comments: First of all, you did mention that less expensive keyboard cases are avialable (~$100) but you didn't mention that much cheaper pencils are also available. I have a 3rd party pencil that cost me less than $20. It does everything (except pressure sensitivity) that the Apple Pencil 2 does. It even charges magnetically. So the cost of accessorising an iPad to make it a Macbook replacement can be as low as $120. For that price getting a laptop that you can also mark-up and make handwritten notes is very attractive. Also, you mentioned a few times that there are cheaper iPad options other than the iPad Pro. However, those are all 10.9" or 11" iPads. Still useable for most student applications but not exactly a direct comparison. But a $600 iPad Air5 with 3rd party keyboard and pencil comes in well below the cost of a 13" Macbook Air. If you want a larger display for less than the cost of a MBA, you can get a certified refurbished 12.9 iPad Pro from Apple that comes with a brand new battery. FInally, it's true that MS Office sucks on iPad. However, the Apple version (Pages, Numbers, Keynote) work very well on iPads. But that means learning new apps and most of us are already proficient and comfortable with Word, Excel, and Powerpoint. The good news is you can stil export doc and xls versions of anything you create in Pages or Numbers.
I had an Ipad air 2 that I used for college and it worked out very well for me. I didn't miss my Mac when I was in class. Imagine if I had an Ipad Pro with IPadOS, things would have been even sweeter. As long as I had internet access, my workflow went very well.
VERY informative! Thank you! Just subscribed :)
You use notion for note taking on MacBook?
I love everything about your review. Straight to the point. Thanks for helping me make my mind!! Most likely getting myself an iPad Pro 11” sometime this month :)
My school's portal isn't compatible with iPadOS. That was a dealbreaker for me.
What about medical doorway. They don’t charge money for their services. You have to pay for exam fees but that’s about it. They help you for free
Hey! Just got to know your channel today. Thanks to Yt recommendations. Have to say it was a great video! A very short simple and comprehensive one. Growing up Switzerland has been a dream country of mine. So just wanted to ask this question, can I become a licensed doctor in Swiss after acquiring a degree in East Europe?
Hey! So there is a governing body that regulates the requirements to become a doctor in Europe. I know specifically in my university that people go back to Switzerland and are doctors but I am not sure that you have to do something extra for it. For example for me to go to most European countries is no issue at all. You best off asking the university directly, most universities will respond really fast!
@@mcgregormed Thanks for the info
thanks for the authentic vlog! I totally agree, often I feel pressured by those hustle-med-students on TH-cam that's why it's nice to see you showing your "healthy chaos" and talking about these types of things. Also nice transitions!!
Thank you for noticing my transitions! With my editing speed that I am currently at they definitely were a small achievement! Thank you for your kind words!

A really helpful video!! Especially the part about sealed recommendation letters is an information that not many applicants know about. I recommand this video to everyone applying for eastern europe medical schools!
Thank you for your kind feedback!
Great video! Such a nice camera! I would love to see a video about a typical study year in Latvia? Are there breaks between semesters?
There are breaks! In summer we have a 3 month break that is really awesome! I will consider making a video on it! Thank you for the suggestion.
Hey 😊 I would love to see a video: "Day in the life of a med student in Riga".
Great idea! I will see if I can make it happen!
