at the end of the year i burn off the entire garden the heat kills seeds but near zero penetration so bacteria in soils remains intact! the burning of all the growth is like a super quick break down then immediately turn the soils and add peat or other amendments to the top this breaks up clays and adds another layer of enrichment to leach down and inoculates the garden for good bacteria in the spring then simply watch soil temps and plant the winter over areas for garlic etc...soak seeds in rain water before planting and pull some sets in buckets for over winter in a warmer building they are dormant but have intact root systems put them down in the compost pits in early spring the root systems only become all they were when they went dormant! if nothing happens so be it reseed with standard seed from your seed bank! over wintering peppers tomatoes onions potatoes etc works very well and using bottles and vinegar for dried egg shells makes a high calcium suppliment as the vinegar liquifies the shells...to almost pure calcium and other minerals found in the toasted shells...bake them off with your cakes and treats then mix with vinegar and co 2 is given off mix 1 cup per 5 gallons and we also use whole raw eggs shells and all when planting these nutrients are the cheapest super amendment with the seed! calcium and other organics break down over the tears for long term slow amending! in 3 years plant and run so your pants do not knock you off your feet! LOL

I have tall ornamental grass plants that I usually cut down in the spring. Last spring after cutting them I tried to mulch the canes with my house hold chipper. unfortunately they were still a little wet and did not chip as well as I would have liked. This year i am planning to cut them and let them dry until spring before chipping. Do you know what value the chipped tall grass might have in a garden bed? or should I just use this a mulch for my flowers etc? Thank you.

This won’t work, especially telling people to use weed waste from their garden or yard. They would be introducing many more weed seeds to the compost and giving the weed seed the perfect environment to flourish and spread! Totally bad idea!

Wait, how does that replace traditional composting bins? Am I supposed to just put my apple cores, cucumber skins, rotten fruits and vegetables and eggshells in my pathway? Am I supposed to put my twigs and branches in the pathway too? What about larger weeds? What about manure? And then what? Step all over it and track decomposing matter into my house? I don't think this particularly wonderful or practical. Use a bokashi compost bin if you're that limited on space. I think with the garden I just saw you should have enough room to have a little compost bin anyway.

Compost is a mix of brown and green, preferably more of the former. I don't fuss overly about the ratio because it depends on what's available, and recommendations span quite a range anyway. I garden with soil that's a mix of organic cow and horse manure, and chicken manure with some residues, and some 20 year old wood chip and random piles of old compost or manure mixed in somewhere. The richest soil I've gardened with. Lots of wood chips and straw where it's useful. The base is yellow soil mostly.
