Building a Live Steam Backyard Railroad: Episode 5
Hey Friends!
Welcome back to Fox Island Railroad! Excited to be out working on the new 7.5" gauge // 3" scale (1/4 Scale) groundline railroad!! In this video, we’re working on laying the first 100ft of track from an unloading spur to a brand new Enginehouse for Dulce #5! This footage was filmed primarily in November/December 2023, however work has continued steadily on the 7.5" gauge line since then.
I'm very excited to announce that we'll finally be getting on a bit of an upload schedule here for the end of 2024, and we'll have new videos on the Channel the first Friday of every month (with serious potential for an unscheduled extra Halloween Special)!! Definitely a few super fun videos coming down the line: Dulce's arrival to FIRX, Visit to Kentucky Railway Museum, and an extended track work episode featuring our buddy Colt Stewart of Mountainview Machine Co!
If you'd like to see more behind the scenes footage from the shop, be sure to follow along on instagram @FoxIslandRailroadCo for daily updates. You can also follow @LiveSteamNation to see photos of scale live steam equipment submitted by owners and rail fans all over the country.
Thanks again for tuning in! Always feel free to drop a Like or Comment to let me know what you think & what you'd like to see more of!

Hey Friends! Thanks for checking out this "Night Run" video with my newest addition to the family: 3" Scale Baldwin Mogul "Dulce" (Los Pinos RR #5). Scaled down from an American-built narrow gauge locomotive that worked for a Puerto Rican sugar cane plantation, this loco has quite a unique story. I'm...

I will be starting a TH-cam channel by the name of my future railroad, the Ripley & Great Southern. I’m glad that you are putting down some 7.5” track. They sure are, bottoms are also char-treated. This entire shed was lifted and moved back in April, and placed on top of a nice gravel pad for better drainage. The idea for this foundation-less shed was just to utilize materials I had, and it only really needed to exist for one week to house the locomotive inbetween arrival and gaining access to my shop. Anything beyond that has been a bonus, as long as it’s still solid we’ll keep using it for a car barn or fair weather storage! 🔥 Thanks very much for following along!!!

I paid just under $700 per truckload of material. I’m in TN and work directly with a local quarry, but since I don’t have a dump truck and I’m out in the country, I’m also paying a flat rate of $150 to my driver per load. Altogether, this is still about 1/4 the price of the previous two quotes I received from “gravel companies”, and the quarry is extremely responsive and great to work with as they have loads of business with highway contracts, etc. and are always ready to load within an hour. Definitely highly recommend going straight to your local source if possible!

      Hey there! Great question, this is actually Not an RMI loco but an earlier, slightly smaller and sturdier predecessor- Dulce was designed and built in Perth, Australia by Willis Light Engineering. The RMI locos are slightly simplified, still great locos, I believe I’ve run almost every wheel arrangement they offer over the years. Like anything, it depends who builds the kit… but overall, they’ve always been great locos for most hobbyists needs! I will relay that I’ve heard folks having trouble getting ahold of RMI the last 6 months or so, may be worth waiting to send a check to see how that plays out. I’m a big fan of the RMI catalog myself, so I sure hope all is well!! There is a small blurb on the loco’s history in the description if you’re interested, and I look forward to sharing more of Dulce’s story soon. I do highly recommend (and really enjoy) the “ride-in” style locomotives if you have the space and resources to maintain, it’s a whole different experience both maintaining and operating for sure! Cheers 🔥

      This set actually came with the locomotive, although if you’re looking for some; there was a fellow on Facebook selling 1.5”/2.5” scale rerailers as well as skids a year or two ago, he may have an ad on DLS as well. I’m not sure where these quarter-scale castings originated, but if I had to guess they came from Australia as well… if not made by the builder Ian Willis, likely WATO or another prominent supplier of that region in the early 90s. To my knowledge, RMI acquired several of WATO’s dies and patterns (including the quarter-scale couplers)… so if they offer a rerailer, it’s likely the same pattern.

    Beautiful day for our first derailment! 🤣 “Dulce” #5 (designed and built by Willis Light Engineering in Perth, Australia) has been doing a wonderful job on Track Work duty. However, running a nearly two-ton locomotive over rough-leveled, un-ballasted track comes with its fair share of risk. This gave me a chance to demonstrate the use of these miniature re-railers; they sure are a nifty piece of equipment, and I couldn’t live without them! Extra full-size footage was borrowed from FWRHS’s wonderful mini documentary on re-railing NKP 765. Thanks for watching! 🔥

    How do you find stuff like that?

    • @FoxIslandRailroadCo
      @FoxIslandRailroadCo 5 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Great question!! Although hunting this stuff down can (at times) feel intimidating, the live steam community is very small, and I was made aware of this batch of rail by several friends in the area. Joining your local Live Steam club is always a great place to start, those folks tend to be connected to other organizations, etc. I will also admit that I was searching & waiting for a deal on a batch like this for roughly three years, so sometimes it just takes some time to find what you’re looking for 🔥

    Glad to see that you are building a high line. That's the only comfortable was to run 3/4" scale engines. The darkened ties are a cool feature. They look like creosoted ties. The forest your railway is in is very cool also. I have a high line here in California in the high mountain desert and I had to plant my trees. The fact that you have a forest already there is a huge asset. Building your own railway is about as fun as it gets and I look forward to watching your progress. Very Cool! Jack

      Hey Mr. Jack, Thanks so much for the kind words!!! I know I’ve definitely seen photos of your beautiful High Line online before, and I have been very inspired by railroads like yours!! Such a shame 3.5” gauge has dwindled so much here in the middle of the country, but certainly hoping more folks will be inspired to “join the fun” once we have a track to run. The forest really has been a blessing here, the shade it provides is the only way I could keep working through the heat last summer!! Sure hope to make a trip out west one of these years, would be a pleasure to cross paths in person one of these days!! Thanks again for taking the time to drop a comment. All the best! -Jimmy 🔥

    Great stuff! Amazing to see what some folks have in their shop - especially someone like Mr. Boucher who has been in the hobby for so long. Congrats on obtaining the Challenger - can't wait to see what you do with her. They are beastly machines in any scale!

      Thanks so much, Dave!! Always a great time visiting the Boucher shop - Dick is truly such an unsung legend of the hobby, and has always been so supportive of the next generations. I really look forward to making some chips on new running gear for the rear engine soon! Hope you’re doing well!! 🙌🏻🔥
