Of all the terrifying emperor moments in return of the jedi, the one that stuck with me most was when the emperor in his throne room discussing fleet placement with vader, and once dismissed, turns to these two ghostly figures in purple robes, seemingly to have a conversation. No explanation is given, nobody outright tells you who these people are and why they are here. Their pale skin and dark eyebags make them look dead, and it is likely that the emperor has essentially turned them into zombies with his mind tricks. It is made even more powerful by the fact that the emperor turns to them only once vader is dismissed. I know its a very small detail but it scared me ever since I was a kid.
