    Wish I was born into a family that set up businesses for me in Penticton. sigh Some win the lottery of life, others have to start with absolutely nothing. In fact, my father stole all the money out of my savings account when I was a teenager, that I had been working hard to save up for a vehicle for many years, doing yard work etc for Seniors in town.

    I used to watch ASL video lessons, and Nigel was often in them. I was interviewed by him through Douglas college when I was trying to see if some of my skills and experience could supplant some of the interpreter courses offered there. Years after that, my partner took ASL at UVic, and you should have seen my excitement when she told me Nigel was her prof! 😅🎉 I had to phone my interpreter friends in Kamloops where I had worked with Deaf kids. Nigel is so cool!

    I am also an activist for our aging population. I received my master's in Gerontology during the pandemic while continuing to work full-time at a global technology company. I now work to bridge the understanding between employers and their later career employees. We are promoting new ways of working for our generation of workers. In the film, I heard several references to "rights" of older workers. Are there legal rights for older individuals in the workplace? I find those guidelines very difficult to enforce because we are also an expensive commodity and are typically ushered out so that 2 younger workers can replace one tenured employee.

    I applied for a CEO position at a small telecom company in BC, with more than 30 years of experience in the field from both a technical and business standpoint including running a successful business before, they told me that I was the best candidate but that I was too old at 55, and they hired a 25 year old with zero experience. The company is going downhill now and their customers are complaining about the service quality. They are always down, they don't even have battery backup on their services, and their website is filled with spelling mistakes. How can anyone take them seriously as a company. I wouldn't put up with it as their CEO, but you get what you choose.

  • @e.b.gilligan7423

    Thanks to Telus for making the film available. It's particularly good on the theme of younger "seniors" being discriminated against for their age while they're still quite able and ready to contribute in the working world. I didn't think older, retired seniors were as well represented. I'm a retired 71-year-old recently and rather suddenly having a mobility issue that makes me look older than during my physically active life. The ageism towards oneself is also an issue that was just briefly touched on in the film. Suddenly, everywhere I go I'm seeing all these other people with canes and walking pole like those I've just started using. I'm constantly aware there's a huge challenge to the health care system with a growing need for joint replacements and other kind of health care and social support that will be needed if seniors are going to not just survive pandemics, for example, but live a good quality of life. I don't feel confident, at the moment, there's enough political and social goodwill towards aging people to ensure needs of the elderly are going to be met. The "boomer remover" phrase reminder was chilling. People who equate social injustice with generational dynamics may go to some pretty ugly extremes with ageism. I do feel our culture tends to equate people's value with their occupations, their wealth and even their status as homeowners or tenants. If that's the scale on which we weigh each other, reductive discrimination is inevitable.

  • @jaylove3487
    @jaylove3487 ปีที่แล้ว

    I first starting experiencing ageism in my fifties, it’s hard to ignore. I was point blank told I was not granted a interview because I was too old, the job was too physically demanding and they did not feel someone my age would be capable. The fact that I can literally run circles around males and females 20-30 years younger was irrelevant as I was never given the opportunity to prove otherwise. When I pushed the issue I was told they were looking for somebody with less experience whom they could mold, they thought someone with my experience, too set in my ways.

      That is unfortunately the type of story we hear a lot. not only is it unfair and insulting for candidates, it also has a negative impact on those workplaces as it deprives other employees from learning and mentoring opportunities.

      "somebody with less experience whom they could mold" meaning someone young, dumb, and full of spunk that they can overwork and underpay and not know that they're getting screwed in the process.
