As a kid, we vacationed in Va Beach every summer in the early 80's. I dont remember much of those vacations. What I do remember is the F-14's flying over. Most of the time they were either too high up to spot or they were out of sight by the time I could figure out which direction to look. 40 years ago, jet engines were much, much louder than they are today. Even though they were 20,000 ft above your head in the hazy sun, you surely knew they were there.

I was stationed at 32nd st in San Diego and these Bad Boys flew over I-15 by Miramar on my way to and from work.
Grew up in Poway. Daily dose of American awesomeness above. The 15 was pretty darn cool, though. Surprised there weren't more car crashes while they were doing touch and goes. I know my eyes weren't on the road! Lol. Remember the Static jets on stands next to the freeway? F4s if I remember.
