The Jackaroo 4WD & Camping Channel
Australia
เข้าร่วมเมื่อ 30 พ.ค. 2021
The channel is for owners of the Isuzu Trooper and its many variants. However, we cover a lot of other 4WD topics around camping, fitting out your vehicle and other technical subjects.
The Isuzu Trooper is a full-size SUV that was produced by the Japanese automaker Isuzu between 1981 and 2002. In the Japanese market it was sold as the Isuzu Bighorn, the car was exported internationally as a Trooper but it also received several other names. These include the Acura SLX, Chevrolet Trooper, Subaru Bighorn, SSangYong Korando Family, Honda Horizon, Opel Monterey, Vauxhall Monterey, Holden Jackaroo, and Holden Monterey.
This channel is not monetised and it is entirely funded by Patreon and Buy Me a Coffee subscribers and me. I now have some merchandise available for Patreons and BMaC (coming soon). The Patreon page raises funds to make content, please support me if you can by clicking the banners.

You can get them for approx $12 -$14 and yes it is Silicone Oil for viscous couplings.

Thank you, very much appreciated.
Looking it seems that the first JIS standard for cross head screws was in 1958 (although revised a few times since).
good info
Glad you liked it.
As I turn 60 I realize that videos like this are a *lot* more interesting to me than they once were. Informative! Entertaining! Thanks for sharing.
good history
Nice explanation Dave, thanks. I thought silicon oil was used because it would become more viscous with higher temperatures so I looked that up after you pointed out the bimetallic strip. It turns out I've been wrong all these years silicon oil appears to become less viscous with temperature. How do you top up the silicon fluid - is there a fill plug on the thing?
Unfortunately not there is no filler plug and Isuzu just say replace it. Well that is okay if you have a few hundred dollars to spare or you want a cheap Chinese knock off. I went out and bought a tool for removing the bolts which are round head screws with a cross head fitting that strip because they are tight. I bought a Manual Impact screwdriver as it was called for $35 at Total Tools for the TTI version. It works well and it is universal which it means it will work in Left and right directions. What I don't understand is that they have a $50+ version with more bits without a case or the $35 version with a case? PS, ask for an Impact Screwdriver as the guy had no idea what I was talking about when I said Manual Impact Driver, we were heading down the Power Tool Aisle until I corrected him. Anyway, I am just making a quick refilling video.
Hello sir, Been following your helpful videos in a while. Is there a chance you can share the details of your personal made puller like measurements of pins, rod and tubes. I would appreciate it much. Thank you.
Unfortunately, I don't have it as it belongs to my son. He didn't make it either as it was bought ready made. I can get it back again and measure it up but I would suggest talking with the page administrator on the 4JX1 Decompile/Learning Project FB page here as he may have the details you need. Please let me know and I will get back the special tool and measure it for you. The admins name is Chris Szkwarek and the FB pages are here - facebook.com/groups/264658247280734
Where does the hose with the tap at the end of the video come from?
I am not sure if you mean where do you buy it or where does it come from Physically. The tap came with the catch can and is located on the drain at the bottom of the catch can. I just brought it down there instead of attaching it to the car.
@ sorry mate all a little new to the 4jx1 have previously had 3 petrol jacks apologies for not being entirely clear with my question
When my 2001 trooper broke down, i refused to have it repaired by mechanics in our area because they were not familiar with an HEUI engine. I had to study the working of the engine myself and did the repairs. I changed the ORPS and the RPCV and successfully brought it to life. It took me one year to do it though.
Well done, that is exactly why I started this channel, to help people like you.
Dave, many years ago I had a toyota hiace roughly converted to a camper. Driving across the Nullabor, the small issue with overheating turned into a big issue where we were running the heater on a 43oC day to try to keep it from cooking the donk. In Ceduna, I finally figured out the thermally activated coupling (like yours) had lost its silicon oil and so wasn't able to drive the fan bladed properly. The solution I came up with was to remove the fan assembly, take it around to a local machine shop who let me use his drill press and I made 3 1/4" holes through the whole assembly and locked it together with 1/4" bolts. That fixed it.
G’day mate I’ve just bought a 2000 diesel jackaroo In very good condition. Do you have any tips on keeping the engine healthy? Also, is there anything specific I need to tell the mechanic when it gets serviced? Cheers
The 4JX1 has a unique donk that few mechanics properly understand. I have my local mechanic and I have tried to give him all the info, but he's always falling short by a tiny amount - enough to cause a continuous list of minor problems. Just ask questions and make sure the mechanic has experience with the Jackaroo. Look up the forums, watch Dave's videos...you need to learn as much as you can. They are exceptional 4x4's but never were popular so the expertise isn't out there. Whereabouts are you?
Yes, absolutely. Never ever let a mechanic use any other oil than 5W-30 or 10W-30. The old adage of an old engine needs thicker oil and you'll be walking home. Try watching the videos about the HEUI engine and never let a mechanic touch it unless he knows what a HEUI engine is. th-cam.com/video/AsGCkQVLUhY/w-d-xo.html
Did I see somewhere that you are in the USA? If so, I suggest that you use a mechanic that knows about early 2000's Ford Super-Duty Pickups as they had similar HEUI engines too.
Thank you heaps! I appreciate the info :) I’m located in South Australia and will definitely be having a good chat to the mechanic before anything gets done. I love my jackaroo and plan to keep it as long as possible
@@Quest4Coins Sorry, I have no idea why I thought you were in the USA? In that case definitely make sure any mechanic knows what they are doing as they can make quite a mess by not knowing. What makes the Jack for me is the fact that I came across a land cruiser and Pootrol on a hill both stuck and after asking if they needed an help which they always refuse, I sailed on by and left them on the hill. LCs and Pootrolls are far too heavy. I have found over the years that the Jackaroo is definitely the best allrounder. Also, if you can get your fuel consumption in the 13L per 100km range, when loaded, it is better on fuel too. I would recommend an auxiliary tank or a bigger fuel tank just for peace of mind. I have a 60l auxiliary making 145 l and my son has the bigger fuel tank at 140 l. The only issue with the bigger fuel tank is you lose your bash plate making the tank vulnerable. The issue with the auxiliary tank is you need a split fuel pipe and a pump.
Ive had new ones out of the box that failed to open.
When I was in the RAF, we had a missile system generator that was misfiring. We checked and found a bad screened spark plug, so we swapped it for a brand new one. No change to the fault so we continued on. After three days of checking we changed the brand new spark plug for another and the problem went away. The issue was the brand new screened spark plug was faulty.
Are you running coolant?
Yes but not during testing
done great to get 700 mate
The best step by step video I've seen. I'm from the Philippines and my 4JX1 engine starts hard and stops while running and starts again but now it won't start anymore. Looks like this video is very helpful
Hi anyone with a Isuzu trooper 4xj1 manual that actually shows how the engine and oil pressure and injectors are situated. Bought a manual that says its 4jx1 but only shows air conditioning, and every other repair than an actual workings of the engine and putting it together. Trooper 3.0tdi 4xj1 slow to strart runs rough than runs ok for the day, oil pressure slow to go up. Desperate need of manual that shows diagrams of the engine and where everything is.
There is an Isuzu Manual for the later Jackaroo here www.patreon.com/posts/jackaroo-manual-117835607?Link& Or you can get it by joining the 4JX1 Decompile/Project FB Group in the files section.

Hello... This message is to thank you and also inform you of some situations... I had asked you about the "check engine" light that came on intermittently and the truck wouldn't start... Solved ; It was the key code and the transponder that were not communicating... And on the other hand, a while ago I asked you about a hydraulic roar that occurred in the high pressure oil circuit. Fixed; It was an "O" Ring that goes in the oil suction from the crankcase that produced an air inlet and did not have enough flow for the high pressure pump... I changed the "O" Ring for four O-ring units and it was left perfect... I want to thank you for the attention provided through your channel and I wanted to collaborate with my experience to whoever can be of use through you... Thank you and Greetings from San Martin de los Andes Patagonia Argentina...
I am so glad you got these sorted and there is no need to thank me at all. There is a mod for the pickups that uses two big springs to support them. I think Jimmy Steel was selling them online a while back. The mod is necessary to support the pickups to stop them cracking. Isuzu did have some modded pickups that had been strengthened but I have never seen any for sale. Obviously neither of these would control what the O-rings are doing.
Ooooh the mighty jack! Ours is the same colour ❤😅😊
Luck of the draw I think, it could have been any colour but anyway that's what I got
Ahh, I think I have the same problem - i.e. oil leak somewhere along the the oil rail. It takes a lot of cranking to start it. Thanks. A couple of questions re tech2; on ebay prices range from $550 to $900 - they all look the same and come with one card of your choice - anything I need to look out for or can I safely get the cheapest? From your earlier video and reading forums, it seems I need to get the isuzu card, however one seller told me I actually need the holden card. So from being sure I am now confused about which card to get. Any guidance is welcome Dave.
There are two types of Tech 2, The original GM version and a Chinese Copy. Unfortunately, the Tech 2 I have is my sons and it is a Chinese Copy. It works okay but I had a tradie around the other day who used to work for Holden and he has one in his shed which he is giving me for free, eventually.
Both the isuzu and holden cards should work.
@@TheStonersheep Thanks.
@@Bennyboy-dog Sorry, I would have to ask Rob what card he got it with but I can if you wish?
@@thejackaroo4WDcampingchannel Thanks Dave - yes, that would be great.
more good info least it was a good easier fix , hardest part getting it all apart to get to it mate
After the other week, I didn't want to strip it again but I did and thank goodness.
The piston oil squirter circuit is part of the oil rail system. My check valve failed and would only hold 7psi. From memory it should hold 30-35 psi over night so you get an easy start up.
Yes, I think mine was losing all it's pressure so I was having to fill the rail every time. Starts a lot easier now.
I think it might be the glow plug seals. Heats up let's air in then it leans out.
Thanks for the info but it isn't the glow plug seals as they don't have any seals and I would see the combustion gasses on the outside of the engine and there is none. Besides I have already checked them. Thanks for the info though.
i had problems like that with mine changed the oil rail oil sensor and the injector harness, was good for about 4 years and started again stopping so had to put new oil rail sensor and harness on again
Thanks for the info, I replaced the harness and the ROTS and ORPS. I also changed the oil rail itself but we think it may be leaking. Tomorrow, I will be looking at the oil rail for leak. I am hoping that the leak if there is one, is between an injector and the oil rail not the ends of the oil rail. The oil rail end caps come off easily but the oil rail ends are so tight.
@@thejackaroo4WDcampingchannel i get a intermittent miss in mine when idling , when i slow down stop at traffic lights it will run rough for 15 seconds then come good for 15/20 seconds and start the rough running for a few seconds but drives good dont know what it is
@@pkgoldopalhuntingI have the same problem but only when the motor cold rough idling
@@robbo7822 Maybe the ORPS or RPCV is playing up? You'd need a Tech 2 to get some data while it is rough running, using a snapshot. I videoed my tech 2 readout and my son had a look and we decided I had a leak somewhere on the oil rail.
Hello, what could be wrong so that when you turn the ignition switch the engine light flashes at very high speed and then the frequency drops but the engine never starts... only after hundreds of attempts suddenly the light stays on normally and the engine It turns on normally... until the phenomenon repeats itself... Thank you...
I've never heard of this before but I would expect it is a broken cable. Have a look at your battery cables especially the ones that go to the starter. Also, check the injector harness plug near the oil dipstick. That can get oil in it and it can cause strange issues. Give it a clean with electrical contact cleaner.
woohoo 600
good info as usual mate i used to drive a fuel tanker for years and load mobil ,ampol shell fuels bp not much difference between them and we could load say like caltex fuel from mobile and others so because its in a shell mobil servo doesn't mean it come from them ha ha all
It always is different to what we expect. It just takes someone on the inside...lol
ive built a few speed way race cars , we had modified distributers those days with only 3 degrees advance set and used to run it at 12 to 16 degrees fixed advance on timing , we used to go to the air port and buy avgas it was about 110 to 130 octan was good as we ran high revs 6 to 7000, but it used to a tracked moisture and corrosion in carbie so after race day fuel line was disconnected and run normal fuel through the system before parking the car but engines , compression and other mods can make a difference

no one cares any more customer service is f..ked now days at most places, when mine died to took it to a auto electrician i know , he fixed it rebuilt it cost me $180 thats 5 years back still going strong, its a shame how some or most of these places work
I went to a local cafe and had soup and when I returned and asked for soup they said we are not making it any more because nobody hardly bought it. So, I said well you aren't selling any now are you? Why not fix the issue, make it to order and not in bulk and sell what you sell? Never thought of that had they?
@@thejackaroo4WDcampingchannel true mate soup can stand in fridge for a few days if not more can make small pot say 4 serves i think that will sell in 1 or 2 days, if you haven't got it you wont sell it
@@pkgoldopalhunting My point is that nobody keeps anything now if it doesn't sell, gone are the days when there were hardware stores where you could buy anything. The Two Ronnies 4 Candles sketch, like that.
@@thejackaroo4WDcampingchannel true mate i build most off my own gear out of other peoples rubbish its a throw away society now and every one screams recycle and climate change they need to take a good look at them selves starting with the government over paid thieves
The Jackaroo i have at the moment I've had it for 4 years and put it through hell never had a problem until now , the flywheel ,, I've been searching for information about the flywheel that is so expensive. What i like to is will a flywheel from a 1999/2000 Holden Rodeo 2.8 flywheel and clutch fit on the 4jx1 Jackaroo does anyone know i don't want to buy a new expensive after market one because im a tight ass pensioner i just want to put a normal flywheel and only spend a couple of hundred dollars on a new clutch instead of thousands of dollars ,,,,
Hi and thanks for the questions, however, I really am not too sure about those questions and everyone I know has a 4JX1T. If I were honest, I think I would message Chris Szkwarek (admin) on the 4jx1 decompile/learning project Facebook page. He will know and if not he will know who to ask. Also, my son Rob may have some idea too, they are the first two pictures of the members on the cover page. facebook.com/groups/264658247280734 Sorry I could help more
i know the feeling about buying parts that wont last and warranty well what warranty had a new turbo fail they stuffed me around for a month than gave me 60% refund or pay them another $60 for post for another one , i took refund , nothing like robbing people blind
When I bought an aftermarket turbo from eBay it had the wrong gasket and was set to 8psi. So, I asked for a gasket and he just gave me my money back and told me to keep the turbo?
@@thejackaroo4WDcampingchannel you must of been lucky mate i must of bough from the wrong seller i ended up making one up out of 2 that i had the one that i bought was set low i think about 8/9 psi running 21 psi now
@@pkgoldopalhunting I'm told that the ECM will not allow too much boost. I was told 21 psi but as you are running this it must be more?
My cylinder head issue was caused by a turbo problem seemed to stem from the turbo waste gate was wound up to get 19psi and it wasn't opening and allowing the boost to release.
@@thejackaroo4WDcampingchannel on mine it lets it go that high i never tried any higher, i dont drive it flat out in the hills all time on hard long pulls just lift foot a tad and watch the pyro meter , goes good
Good job mate i might try this..just had injectors rebuilt due to diesel and oil mixing. Now its not starting. Ill try to remove rpcv will buy 21mm socket first
Buy a special tool from Chris who runs the 4JX1 Decompile/ project FaceBook Channel, they work best.
starting up time after doing work on these is a great time and holding breath time
Yes, but the delays through weather and waiting for parts is just mind numbing
If you zip tie the intake tube in a figure 8 around the rocker cover stand-off it will lift the pipe up and take the weight off at the turbo. Also I did a video of just changing out my turbo cartridge without removing the exhaust side of the turbo. Heaps easier than trying to get the whole unit off.
Yes, I will do that
Swivel headed ring ratchet spanners are the go to.
They are good as long as the head isn't too loose.
They can be tightened.@@thejackaroo4WDcampingchannel
Need close in camera a bit more.
Maybe captions while music is on.
It's not the camera it is me
When are you coming up to Cairns?
We were coming up in March this year but his Jeep karked it and the engine was garbage so it got scrapped.
I may still travel up there but it won't be until 2025 now.
have you got a link to the oil rail temperature sensor where you get it from pls i have problem with mine it goes good but idles rough every now and then like a miss in the engine , when i stop at intersection will run rough for 5 seconds then good for 10 or 20 seconds then a rough for a couple seconds ive put a new orpc , injector harness second time in 5 years as i did the injector seals etc back then and the rpcv dont know why , stay safe
I have two old oil rails however, I did order a couple on eBay but they came today, the wrong size and even the pins in the plug are wrong. As soon as Find some I will let you know. They aren't changed that often so if you can find an old oil rail there will be one in it, you'll need a 19mm socket (long reach)
If you want genuine, but from Ibrahim at Rahmin Auto in Dubai. I can let you know the email if you wish. However, I did see some genuine ones on eBay but they were majorly expensive more than the ORPS, around $450
@@thejackaroo4WDcampingchannel ok thak you i dont know why its getting a miss in engine at idle not really when cold looks like when engine is warmed up after driving it for 5 or 10 min so was thinking mite be the oil rail temp sensor let us know when you get the correct one cheers
@@pkgoldopalhunting Will do but I reckon you'd be better off getting hold of a Tech 2 and looking at your data. For example a misfire could be as simple as the injector harness plug requiring cleaning? Tech 2 will give you more idea as my ORTS was stuck on 29 degrees.
@@thejackaroo4WDcampingchannel ok will try to borrow a tec 2 if any one has one close thanks
would be good to see if the rpcv fixes the smoke problem
Yes, but both Chris and I still think there is an injector issue. I have had 2 injector failures over the years and the symptoms were so similar that I still think its this issue. So much so, that I am going to pursue those first before the RPCV. Sorry.
great to hear it running i get great satisfaction if i do some thing like this hope you do as well , is the oil rail temp sensor the one on rail under the oil pressure sensor,? cheers
I just wish it was running well.
@@thejackaroo4WDcampingchannel me to mate it gets like that with these vehicles
