I’m a beginner bookbinder who loves exposed spine bindings, particularly Ethiopian style bookbinding (commonly called 2-needle “Coptic”). I first learned through TH-cam videos, but in my desire to dive deeper, I am now relying on books on bookbinding. My favorite books so far are by Keith Smith. My greatest teacher is practice. There are skills and nuances that can only be learned from doing the thing and making a shit ton of mistakes. I started this channel as a way to document what I’ve learned in case I forget. Along the way, if I get feedback from seasoned bookbinders or inspire others to hand make books, that would be a marvelous bonus!
Sewing an exposed spine book (Ethiopian bookbinding, 2-needle Coptic)
Chapters
0:00 Threading first signature
0:17 Attaching first cover
1:38 Sewing text block
4:24 Attaching second cover
This isn’t a tutorial. It’s a sped up demonstration showing my process when I sew a book together. While this way of bookbinding is commonly called “Coptic,” it is my understanding that this name is inaccurate and that it should be attributed to and called Ethiopian bookbinding.
This handmade book was sewn according to the instructions for “2-needle Coptic #1” in Keith Smith’s “Non-Adhesive Exposed Spine Sewings” volume 3 book.
If there’s interest, I may re-publish this video with a voice-over to explain what I’m doing and to share some tips that helped me tidy up the stitches.
