This video is about the game of Diplomacy, an American strategic board game created by Allan B. Calhamer in 1954 based on the European Great Powers in the years leading up to World War I. The game was the favorite of John F. Kennedy and Henry Kissinger. Seven (7) players control the respective powers of England, France, Germany, Austria, Italy, Russia, and Turkey and fight for world domination (control over Europe), using negotiations, diplomatic skill, tactics, and grand strategy to establish covert deals, attack mutual enemies, and backstab established allies. A "stab" is the word for betraying your ally.
TL;DR: Diplomacy is basically Risk without the dice, or chess with seven players on a world map.

NOw play 5d diplomacy
Summary: Geography: More centers, can be active on both fronts early game. However, weak in some frontal places (one of which has a center). Notes: - Should get at least one BUILD in 1901 - Should go for Rom or Swe - Should befriend Ger, Aus, or Tur (you don't want them to attack you) - Should be percieved as giving, not taking - Should be aware of moving commitments - Should get in touch with the other players after this Goal: "Go unchecked" - FLMD
Basis of Influence 101
Prince of Convergence plays into it well...
Negative emotion comes with a force...
Peace is temporary...
Summary - Stalemate Lines are chokepoints that make it impossible to advance beyond a certain point in a region - Most happen along the middle - If you can hold the right points you can hold out against attempts (essentially forever) - When you get close, it can result in a draw (game end)
INteresting. The first Diplomacy game I ever played I was Turkey, and the game ended in a draw between Germany and I, after we had coordinated against Russia.
In my first ever full ranked game, I played Germany and got Russia to play this opening. I asked them for DMZ in the Gulf as well as all the common ones and they asked me to not enter DEN in spring. We both honored that agreement and I fealt like it was a great foundation of trust. ... between myself and Russia as well as between myself and England who I allready had an aliance with and who did not bounce me in DEN in fall. It would have been an interesting game but Russia forfit and the standin player did not recommit to that friendship. Though honestly, I did assume I would stay loyal to England, so the best result Russia could have gotten from that opening was a three-ways draw (or a successful stab on their end). My first full ranked game did, naturally, include at least one comperatively unexperianced player and even then did the opening not perform very well.
I feel like I connect with FLM a lot 😆 Diplomacy, Audiobooks and PA? Pshhhh
I think this game is the same as the Bornu game but just a different perspective
Fun game :) congratz on the big win!
I'm starting a Dip group t work and pointing them at your "Basics of" series. I played a lot 30 years ago, but most of my new people aren't that old, or heard of it before.

How does a Russia-Austria-Italy alliance work? Does it work better? As a first time player, starting a game with other first timers, does being a diplomatic support for Russia against Turkey and Italy against Germany/France while growing slowly, aiming for a three way draw agreement have viability? Italy being a childhood friend of mine, Russia being the smartest guy I know (Bloody Oxford scholarship for Physics), Turkey being incredibly gullible, Germany being aggressive (but has bias against France and England), England being petty and a little gullible, and France being aggressive but very petty. I’m going to try barter for Greece, allow Russia to get Romania, get into the north to assure Germany against Russian attack and demilitarise temporarily, encourage Italy to go for African countries and to get fleets. It’s 3am and the game to technically today, I’ll probably edit how it goes, but yeah. Does it seem viable?

not that helpful :(
We are not computers. We don't choose the best possible move. We go by instinct and intuition, and what a human may consider the best move may be far from what a chess computer would(it would rate "best human" average in slew of other "inhuman" moves) Also there's a lot of room for interpretation in chess. That's why there are different playstyles(aggressive, defensive, controlling, materialistic, sacrificial etc). It's an imperfect reflection of diplomacy in a way. Be aggressive, taking a high risk, high reward approach or be defensive, taking a low reward, low risk approach. Predict your opponents' response and capitalise on their moves. It's that Diplomacy is a condensed version of chess. A series of chess moves made with a goal in mind is a single turn of diplomacy. What goals you have are largely a product of your playstyle. The big demarcation between Diplomacy and Chess is the possibility of making suboptimal moves and still getting a better outcome. It's like playing fog of war chess or otherwise having simultaneous turns. More tactics and situational significance than overall strategy.
I’m so sorry but you butchered every power name except Northumbria and Wessex and Ireland and Alba. Gwynedd is pronounced Gwyneth (th as in the) Jorvik is pronounced Yorvik Mercia is pronounced Mer see uh. Sorry But it pained me.
Very interesting to hear y'all's commentary on this game, especially with A2 just about to kickoff. Looking forward to a possible future commentary for the next iteration of this variant.
"Buff Chile isn't real!It cannot hurt you" Buff Chile
It would have been a roll of a game, if you hadn't missed that damn build. With all of the West, Egypt and Greece would have to pivot towards you in unison to stand a chance. Meanwhile Persia would most likely be a thorn at their side, due to the aggressive opening Egypt did against it(well both empires essentially)

Posted a new map on the discord called “The Empire and the 13 Kingdoms”. It’s got some influence from the 1936 map where the empire acts like the 12-17th century Holy Roman Empire in theory.
As a colonial you cant fight any other colonial as it leaves up weakness at so many fronts. It possible you need to trade centers with other colonials so everyone has their area of influence
Portugal in history fought many different wars. This game no different. You need to fight one opponent at one time, or you lose.

the regionals should always work together to kick out the colonials. or else.

Haha I was the end of game Poland. Glad we had about 2 years not being worst enemies.
2:51:23 Let it be known I was depending on Spanish moves here.
Thanks for playing! Match was a bit of the pain in the ass, but I had fun never managing to cooperate with you once. It was an honor to play with you 🫡.
I was looking at this guide again due to my first French game starting. I basically won by taking all of Italy and Turkey. England my longest ally owned Portugal, Bel and Hol, and Scandinavia. I basically only won because England waited until the last possible moment to attack me and built nothing but fleets.
LETS GO
The one issue that I have with this opening that you didn't mention is that if England makes a standard opening (ie - nwg and nth) then they're in position to support a convoy to Norway and because of your army in St Pete are more or less obligated to do that. This means that if they had been planning on focusing more on the continent and trying to, say, convoy to Belgium instead, you're denying them that option, essentially forcing England to put all of their units focused on Scandinavia and therefore fighting you. I agree that it can still work if you have Germany on side, but it essentially requires it, since now England is committing its units against you and is likely to offer Germany whatever it can to bounce you in Sweden.
Happy stabbing
