Lingua Brutallica Podcast
เข้าร่วมเมื่อ 17 เม.ย. 2021
Lingua Brutallica is an ethnographic podcast run by Dr. Jess Birnie-Smith (@JessBirnieSmith) and Dr. Wes Robertson (@ScriptingJapan), two sociolinguists/metal fans working at universities in Australia. Through interviewing artists in the extreme metal scene about their lyrics, we attempt to shed light on the role of language in metal, how metal spaces serve as a place for (re)constructing the meaning of words, and if "metal language" exists/what "metal language" means.
We upload new episodes on Podbean (linguabrutallica.podbean.com) & Spotify (open.spotify.com/show/5jtNwhbyhjr41SGWMVPWAk) every three weeks. We upload episodes in bunches to TH-cam at a less regular pace.

Episode 52: Afterbirth
In this episode we chronicle Will Smith’s work with diverse death metal projects including Artificial Brain, Biolich, Reeking Aura, and most recently, Afterbirth. Departing from death metal’s love affair with gore, many of Will’s lyrics capture images of mental illness, invasive insects, and filth. Though such scenes would not be out of place in your average horror movie, Will explains that their inspiration is closer to fact than fiction. Many of Will’s lyrical motifs reproduce aspects of his past experience growing up in a blue-collar neighbourhood in Long Island and his current work in disability service provision. Will describes how writing these lyrics gave him an outlet to work through the trauma of witnessing first-hand the devastating effects of poverty and untreated mental illness. In effect, while death metal is best known for its celebration of death and destruction, Will finds that working in the genre can be profoundly therapeutic.

มุมมอง 3911 หลายเดือนก่อน
Welcome to our 50th episode! In this very special episode, we interview vocalist Himari Tsukishiro and Ricky Wilson of Isiliel. Episode 49: Gama Bomb
มุมมอง 21ปีที่แล้ว
Speaking with Joe McGuigan and Philly Byrne, this episode takes as its point of departure a tweet written by Philly about Gama Bomb's lyricism, stating “interesting fact: most metal people who criticise us for being 'un-serious' or 'goofy' didn't grow up during a *civil war* like we did. Go ahead and write your wee songs about hatred and murder: must be great to be a tourist”. As the interview ...
Episode 48: Hellripper
มุมมอง 8ปีที่แล้ว
This episode investigates the dark lyricism of James McBain's solo-project Hellripper. James initially describes his lyrics, laden with satanic, occult, and antichristian themes, as written primarily in service of compatibility with Hellripper's black and thrash metal music. But don't be fooled, those that care to peer behind the curtain of black metal's most archetypal tropes will find not onl...
Episode 47: Svalbard
มุมมอง 10ปีที่แล้ว
Our interview with Serena Cherry begins with the vocalist setting the record straight on Svalbard's common mistyping as a hardcore band, instead offering post-metal, black metal, and even post-rock as more suitable alternatives, demonstrating how her music, and accompanying lyrics, are notoriously difficult to set against a single genre label. As our interview progresses, Serena guides us throu...
Episode 46: Fallujah
มุมมอง 7ปีที่แล้ว

Episode 43: Horrendous
มุมมอง 8ปีที่แล้ว
In this episode we speak to not just one or two but four bandmembers - Alex, Damian, Jamie and Matt - about how they collectively write lyrics for progressive death metal project, Horrendous. Although their name might conjure the images of blood and gore that death metal is most known for, the band's lyricism could equally be described as romantic and erudite. Using language more akin to poetry...
Episode 44: Psycroptic
มุมมอง 18ปีที่แล้ว
In this episode, we speak with Jason Peppiatt of Australian technical thrash and death metal band, Psycroptic. Looking back over the lyrics he has composed for the band since 2012, Jason discusses how he departed from the prosaic narrative-driven sci-fi fantasy lyrics written by drummer Dave Haley and former vocalist Chalky, instead developing a lyrical style that more directly comments on the ...
Episode 45: Memmorhage
มุมมอง 16ปีที่แล้ว
In this episode, we interview Garry Brents about his solo nu-metal project, Memorrhage. Listen as Garry guides us on our journey through 90s/00s nostalgia, combining lyrics about mechs and video games with a distinctly nu-metal sound. Episode 42: Subterranean Disposition
มุมมอง 19ปีที่แล้ว
In this episode, we talk to Terry Vainoras - the multitalented guitarist, vocalist, lyricist, and saxophonist of doom/death metal outfit, Subterranean Disposition. Episode 39: Dawn Ray'd
มุมมอง 33ปีที่แล้ว
This episode presents our interview with Simon Barr of Dawn Ray'd - the anti-fascist black metal project looking to strike back against far right provocation in the scene. Though his lyrics engage with fantasy and escapism, Simon's work is also overtly anarchist in the way it explores common struggles of the current time. At the same time, Dawn Ray'd's lyrics remain a sincere representation of ...

Episode 41: Lo!
มุมมอง 23ปีที่แล้ว
In this episode, we interview Sam Dillon of Australian sludge-metal project Lo! Sam tells us how he concocts lyrics that pull from his obsession with natural history and animal folklore, weaving together the surrealism of organic evolution and the realism of myths and fables. Sam details how, by exploiting his advanced palate for word-eating, he layers visceral and tactile words with rhymes and...
Episode 38: Parius
มุมมอง 42ปีที่แล้ว
In this episode, we speak with Louis Thierry, vocalist and lyricist of Parius, whose lyrics work to transport their listeners or readers to a place beyond the world they know - most recently, into outer space. This is a fantastic interview with an artist who I wish did waaaay more interviews. Great job folks. (Get it??? Folk…)
I came here from the Heavy Hole podcast. I have followed Will Smith since his days in Artificial Brain (RIP), and I love to know more about his lyrics!
I'm so happy he mentioned Bjork, it screams Bjork to me! The texture of Lynn's voice and the slow build / progressions especially.
Been listening to Panopticon since about 2015. I've always thought Austin (happens to be my name as well) had one of the most unique and intriguing takes on the genre, blending in the elements he mentioned throughout this. From Roads to the North to Kentucky to Autumn Eternal even more recent releases like Collapse he infuses these elements in new ways with every release. He's the Woody Guthrie of black metal if you will and I'd go as far to say out of the American black metal scene he's the only one truly carving out our own niche; unique from the European sound that most American bands seek to imitate. Love to hear it and shoutout to him, I bought Roads to the North on vinyl in 2016 and he sent it to me personally. Felt special even if he is a one man band, you just don't get that kind of treatment as a fan.
Agree totally.
Glad this introduced me to this podcast. Wonderful interview and brilliant exploration you are doing with this podcast
Thanks so much for saying so!
just discovered y'all after googling the pronounciation of nechochwen... just want to say that this is an awesome podcast and i'm definitely subscribing for more! very good vibes from both of you. happy to see you guys are still posting and will definitely be catching up on some other episodes in the mean time 🤙🤘 thanks for the great content! 🙌

great interview very sad that it does not have more views, panopticon is a great artist with a superb discog, my fav black metal "band"
That is not inferi logo😅
This podcast deserves more subscribers
Thank you!
Sich an intimate and awesome interview. Thank you for making it.
Thank you for listening!
This podcast has a ridiculous low number of views. Austin has to be one of the most talented musicians I’ve ever listened to and he’s such a humble friendly dude when you speak to him.
Crazy this has so few views. This is a great interview. Thanks to both parties in taking the time to discuss.
Thanks so much for listening! Our main way of releasing content is on Podbean/Spotify, so we don't put a huge amount of time into promoting the TH-cam side of things. But we are glad it reaches some here people for sure!
I can listen to Austin talk all day. Panopticon is so incredible. I was able to see them at Fire In The Mountains last year.
Great insight into the band's lyrics. Absolutely love this band, and the lyrics do not disappoint. Noticed in the end you mentioned you were based in Australia, maybe you can get the band Be'lakor which are based down there, they have amazing story-telling lyrics you should check them out.
This was interesting to listen to, good questions :) Thank you
Thanks for listening!
Glad oli mentioned dying fetus when talking about swearing in death metal, cause I immediately thought of wrong one to fuck with
For tech death cryptopsy is not very obscure, they’re considered one of the pioneers of tech death. Also that’s crazy that they were your first concert
First concert for one of us, and the other has never seen them. Bit of a contrast!
☹️ 𝓹𝓻𝓸𝓶𝓸𝓼𝓶
It's sad this doesn't have a lot of views. This is really solid content and I hope you guys keep pushing this.
Gotta start small! Thanks for listening. We have no plans on ending any time soon, and are currently releasing a new episode on Podbean/Spotify every 3 weeks. TH-cam uploads are always a bit delayed.
@@linguabrutallicapodcast2210 Oh wow, I'll make sure to follow you guys on Spotify.
i love the calamus will animate lyrics, the pillow factory fits really well imo lol. Also, I guess the song he's talking about at 37:58 is Acrid Canon Also, the difficult vocabulary Oli uses makes the sci-fi themes more apparent, together with the surgically precise instruments in Relentless Mutation. When I first heard Remote Tumour seeker, the arpeggio melody at the beginning sounded like a surgery instrument or something to me which was reflected in the lyrics
This was really cool to listen to, as a new Cytotoxin fan. Thank you both!
Thanks for listening!
Please post more! I am loving these interviews! Beyond Creation is awesome.
Thanks so much for checking us out! We update every three weeks, although TH-cam uploads come a bit later. The best place to keep up with releases is twitter.com/brutalinguist
