Hawking was clearly deluded. A sphere (universe) starting at size zero would literally be nothing and "contain" no mass/energy. So what could possibly cause nothing to expand and where would the mass/energy come from? This ludicrously unscientific idea from Hawing highlighs the lengths that poor scientists will go to to try to support the failing Big Bang theory. This Big Bang theory (or Lambda Cold Dark Matter model) is the biggest failure in science with neither dark energy (Lambda) or dark matter being physically detected leaving cosmologists clueless about 95% of the mass/energy of the universe which they CLAIM exists. Further, expanding space is a myth as there are no real measurements showing that galaxies are actually increasing their distance apart over time. No hot and/or dense state has even been detected in an "early" universe nor has the age of the universe been confirmed to show that a specific time was indeed early. Time is simply an abstract concept used to compare and quantify any change - usually any movement. And given that there is no experimental data to contradict this statement: matter/energy cannot be created or destroyed, matter/energy (i.e. the universe) must have always existed, and must presumably have always been evolving - changing - then time cannot have ever started.

Folks, you can do a LOT better in terms of getting quantum physics explained to you than Tyson. I'm not meaning to criticize him particularly, but that's just not his domain of expertise, and in the end he's just a public communicator - not really a seriously deep thinker. There's some really good stuff on quantum theory out there. Go find some of Sabine Hossenfelder's stuff, for example, or Leanord Susskind's Stanford lectures. You'll be a whole lot better off.
