Ken Shappert Travels The World
Canada
เข้าร่วมเมื่อ 7 ก.ค. 2020
Welcome to my TH-cam Channel, I'm Ken Shappert.
My whole life I've been passionate about motorcycles (and all motorized vehicles, really) and equally curious about the world. I've owned a number of motorcycles, including several Bultaco's to Ducati's, and travelled fairly extensively to over 40 countries around the world.
I am now combining my passions and exploring the world on the back of my trusty steed Molly, my 2020 Honda CB500X modified for long distance travel. I've learned that I enjoy making videos sharing my experiences with and (hopefully!) entertaining you.
Currently: South America

Returning to Argentina for the last time | Pan-American Highway Motorcycle Ride |
Crossing the border from Paraguay to Argentina by motorcycle.
I have lost track of how many times I have entered Argentina, but this will sadly be the last time (on this trip). My original plan was to ride through Venezuela back to Colombia, but I was unfortunately unable to secure an entry visa to Venezuela while on the road. So, back to Buenos Aires we go to ship the Motorcycle. As I have a few other things going on, the Motorcycle will be shipped back to Canada while I spent some more time in Colombia and then Europe. This is not the end of my adventures, but I will be taking a little break on riding and making the videos; it has been about 2 years of being on the road with my trusty Honda CB500X. Who knows what is next!

Entering Paraguay | By Motorcycle From Brazil | Ciudad Del Este, Paraguay |
มุมมอง 3552 หลายเดือนก่อน
Crossing the border from Brazil to enter Paraguay at Ciudad Del Este was a somewhat chaotic experience. I was told to use the "Moto" lane, but on this lane there is nowhere to stop! It just funnels you past immigration without stopping, puts you onto the international bridge and into Paraguay! Once I realized I had "exited" Brazil without any stamps or anything, I turned around to "re-enter", w...
Crossing Brazil by motorcycle to visit Iguaçu Falls | Foz do Iguaçu |

After spending some time with friends celebrating Carnaval in Belo Horizonte and Itauna in Brazil, I hit the road on my Honda CB500X motorcycle to cross Brazil and reach the world famous Foz do Iguacu, or Iguacu falls. Unfortunately, during the celebrations I believe I caught a dose of something and was quite sick and tired for this journey, therefore there was not a huge amount of filming done...
Rio De Janiero to Ouro Preto | Riding the Estrada Real, Brazil | The Royal Route |
มุมมอง 3032 หลายเดือนก่อน
Leaving the incredible city of Rio De Janiero we start heading inland on the Estrada Real. The Estrada Real in Brazil is a collection of roads that lead from the the mining areas of the inland province of Minas Gerais down to the coast (Rio de Janiero and Paraty). These roads were built to get minerals (gold, diamonds etc.) to port for shipping back to Portugal, and to get supplies (food, build...
Riding My Favourite Part of Brazil | Coastal Route From São Paulo to Rio De Janiero | Costa Verde |
มุมมอง 2912 หลายเดือนก่อน
A Brazilian Motorcycle adventure up the coast, starting in Brazils second oldest city Itanhaem (founded 1532) and heading to Rio De Janiero. Starting in Curitiba I needed to get a quick repair done on my chain, which had a master link fly off unbeknownst to me. The lads got me sorted out and I was on my way to the sea. While the coastal road was beautiful, windy and scenic, there was a ton of t...
Riding a Motorcycle in Brazil's Monsoon Season | Soaked to the Bone |
มุมมอง 3183 หลายเดือนก่อน
My time in Brazil has coincided with the Brazilian monsoon season so I've yet to get a dry day, and usually end the day soaking wet. Day after day of this started becoming difficult, putting on soaking wet riding gear every morning. I've started too smell very bad! But even through all of that, Brazil is such a fascinating and interesting country. I've had to, or at least chosen to, stay on the...
Brazil's Best Motorcycle Ride | Through the Mountains and Then Serra do Rio do Rastro |
มุมมอง 7013 หลายเดือนก่อน
This was the best day of riding that I have done in Brazil. Serra do Rio do Rastro is almost certainly the most famous motorcycle ride in Brazil, with countless steep switchbacks as you ascend/descend along the mountainside, surrounded by lush mountains. Unfortunately this was monsoon season in Brazil so I didn't get any days free of rain and was usually soaked. This meant that I was not able t...

Hello! I discovered your channel only yesterday and I am fascinated by the tours you do in South America. They are extraordinary amazing. I also dream of making some trips around Peru, at least with a scooter. You are doing a wonderful job. Thank you very much!
Brilliant, and welcome! I think you should definitely follow your dream and do a scooter trip through Peru and possibly South America. You only live once!
@kenshapperttravelstheworld8845 Next year I intend to go on a second initiatory trip with a group in this country. I'm just dreaming about the motorcycle for now. I live in Europe, Romania, and it's a bit difficult from a logistical point of view, but one day it will happen.
Merry Christmas, bro!
To you (belatedly) also!
Greetings and Merry Christmas. I'm George from California, retired cop, fellow motorcyclist and have a huge love and respect for most of the Colombian people. I just got back from Colombia yesterday and happen to be in circacia in "el eje cafetero" last week. Congratulations surviving Colombia and its "trancones." Just F.Y.I., the road from "salento" up to the "valle de cocora is absolutely beautiful......I just now came across your Colombia videos so i'm going to keep watching.....perhaps you alresdy visited the "cocora valley" and I have not come across it yet. Ride safe : ) .
Belated merry Xmas. Yes, valle de cócora was incredible!
Hi Ken.. did you do Labrador after NFL?
No, I have not yet been to Labrador
I really need to catch up to you on videos. What's with the car/truck wrecks?! How was the wind on your way north?
No idea about the wrecks really, my assumption is that they are breakdowns or thefts that are stripped and set alight over time. But that is pure speculation, if logical. Wind going north was terrifying for the first day. Almost at the point that I had to pull over lol. On the way down I was thinking “I don’t know what all the fuss was about” 🙄
Really enjoying this thx Ken!
🫡
Thx Ken …. 2025 on my gsa hope to recapitulate your trip! What month is this???
Nice! It’s an adventure lol. I believe I made it to Tuktoyaktuk around 27th of June, so end of June I was up. I think it was good (early) timing as on the way up I wondered about the stories of the unbelievable bugs swarms, because I hadn’t seen anything of the sort. And then on the way back…..
May I ask how much the hole trip cost in cdn dollars? Feel free to not answer. Thanks though!
I never really added up a firm total, it was too painful to really think about. That, and the trip is never done 😉. But in hindsight I could have done it considerably cheaper without much less comfort. I really enjoyed myself 😂🤣
@kenshapperttravelstheworld8845 Thank you for the reply! I would like to know if the date/time of your videos corresponde to the actual time that you were there? The reason I'm asking is because I'm trying to plan a motorcycle trip from Ecuador to Ushuaia and trying to figure out which months are best. Thank you again!
No, when the video posted is not related to when I was there as I quickly realized I had no interest in religiously pumping out a couple videos a week like a job haha. After about 5 months in Colombia I did Ecuador to Ushuaia from the beginning of June until mid December. It was absolutely perfect timing and luck weather wise, I can count on my fingers how many days I had rain
Of all your videos I'm not going to show my wife or mother, this is the one, and maybe the preceding three... I, on the other hand, applaud your skills! Maybe I missed it, but did you manage to stop for gas somewhere in the convoy or somehow do the whole trip on 2 bars and reserve? Thanks, Ken!
Hahaha fair enough. That’s funny. And understandable. You definitely don’t need to ride as aggressively as me, but a combination of slow truck (20kph) after slow truck in the mountains with a moto crazed culture and it just feels like the only thing to do 😬🙈. Yeah I got gas. My biggest problem not being a “professional content creator” is that when I’m faced with problems my first thought isn’t “this will make great content, I need to ensure I get it all on film”. I just go into problem solving mode and then afterwards realized that I, once again, missed the opportunity for great content LOL. The other motorcyclist I met that day took me and we passed the whole convoy, got gas and then caught our way back up to the front of the convoy. Ahhhh what a day/memory
Riding downhill in mud is about as much fun as riding on snow or ice. Yuck. The geodesic dome stay looked fantastic though, so worth the harrowing ride out of there. With luggage and your stunning passenger on board, how did the suspension do on the CB500X?
Well i got the rally raid suspension so it’s better than stock, but even so on some of the rougher parts of the hill-climb I made her get off and walk 🙈. On the way up some of the (paved) roads had so much camber twisting and undulations in the corners that I was really scraping the pegs going around corners. I was not going all that fast, nor trying to scrape the pegs, so it wasn’t exactly great. But that tiny little bike isn’t made for, and is overloaded by, two adults with full luggage + aluminum boxes. So it did it, and without real “problems”, and I would do it again for a day or weekend, but it would not be long-term sustainable (or good for the bike)
I see what you mean about life EVERYWHERE in Latin America. The towns looked fine, but yeah, I wouldn't be comfortable riding there at night at all. Thanks, Ken!
Yeah, #1 rule of riding anywhere in Latin America is DON’T RIDE AT NIGHT (and not necessarily for the reasons you think)
No crashbar?
No. With proper hand-guards and, most importantly, a solid bash plate to protect the vulnerable bottom and oil filter the bike actually crashes very well (see my other videos lol). As-is you would need a very angular rock or something to get in there and do catastrophic damage; I deemed the added weight, vibration potential and aesthetics of crash bars to not be worth the minimal perceived benefit
Escape from Bogata! Love it!!
Colombia has some of the best riding on the trip, and is also probably the most moto-centric country in the world (that I’ve seen)
Can an American issued IDP for a US DL with a state motorcycle license endorsement work for Brazil moto?
If you mean to ride your own motorcycle, yes. If you mean to rent one, I have no idea but assume yes. In my personal experience the IDP is just about never asked for or necessary, just a North American (english) license. They also expire after a year so I spent a year without a “valid” one. I would, however, probably leave home with one as it is one less excuse for anyone to give any sort of issues over. Cheap insurance imho
Hello, with the sheepskin seat cover, that's very interesting. On my bike the original seat causes me to slip forward a lot that it's annoying as heck! I typically wear a Dianese textile pant. Does the sheepskin keep you from sliding or does it depend on the type of pants you're wearing?
Yeah the stock seat sucks, I have the same problem with the slope sliding me forwards and crushing my balls. Very uncomfortable. Honestly I don’t think the sheepskin really holds you in place, it may even have less friction than the plastic on the seat (?), and I would assume that changes with material, as the seat would, marginally. But… It makes the seat significantly more comfortable overall, and creates a nice soft barrier between the seat/tank and your nether regions. Dollar for dollar vs benefit, this was probably the best mod/accessory I did to my bike. Keep in mind that I do lots of high mileage days often, so being comfortable is crucial for me
@@kenshapperttravelstheworld8845 Oh ok I understand. Thank you for the explanation. I do mostly short rides, but if I do longer ones, I would probably want to try the sheepskin 😉
The word you were looking for when wondering how to describe this video would be informative. It was, very. Thanks, Ken!
🫡
That "nest" is almost certainly black tree fungus. Nasty stuff.
No idea what that is but sounds bad
I would not have listened to that friendly truck driver pointing you down what looked like the wrong way down a one-way road to get to immigration. And, I would have been wrong! I am not looking forward to these border crossings. My Spanish has a long way to go before being very useful. I appreciate your videos, they're teaching me important stuff! On an odd note ... what's up with the tip of your nose after your close call? Thanks, Ken!
Yeah don’t worry too much. This was probably the least fun border due to the heat and wait, just got unlucky with the tourist busses. Entering/exiting Nicaragua is a notoriously bad border crossing, most aren’t as bad. The only other one that was as bad, or worse, than this was the Belize/Guatemala border. You eventually figure out what is supposed to be going on LOL. It doesn’t help that apparently it depends who is working that day on the experience you receive. Best advice I had is show up early to the border and plan for it to take all day. If you get through in a couple of hours it’s a bonus, that way your not stressed out and in reality 99% of the time your gonna get through that day. No idea about my nose?? Haha.
Sunset volcano tobogganing versus the most insane snow tobogganing as a kid. How do they compare? Thanks, Ken!
Well, rock is far less “slidey” than snow/ice, but you have a LOT longer way to go that you can pick up speed; if your brace enough. I wasn’t as brave as I thought I would/wanted to be, the scary video they showed ahead of it obviously did the trick lol
Better late than never, to comment, your new helmet mic is NEXT LEVEL!! This makes your videos at least 100% more enjoyable to watch and they were pretty good before!! Thanks, Ken!
Yeah the mic makes a huge difference. When it’s working as intended….lol. Sometimes the wind noise takes over and renders the audio unusable, and sometimes it just doesn’t work. But it makes the videos far more entertaining, until it stops working 🙈
The main thing this video taught me is that I need to double down on my Spanish language studies. Thanks, Ken!
Yeeeeahhhh, as bluntly as I can put it is to not stress if you don’t have it, lots of people don’t, it just means more bumbling around. But every single word more you can learn is helpful. From my first border crossing where I didn’t really speak Spanish, to my last where I’m fairly confident; the main thing is just a world of difference in your confidence and therefore comfort level during any and all interactions 😬. It makes me grateful for the hours that I soaked into Spanish practice before leaving lol
Oh my, your comment section blew up!! That's great! I'm just happy to see you got a new windshield extension, and yes, it's the exact one I got after my loved, but crappy one fell apart. Can't wait to hear the new mic setup! Thanks, Ken!!
Yeah the people from El Salvador really love their country and supported this video. Probably the only real regret I have in my trip is not spending more time in El Salvador. Windshield extender should be stock on the CB imo
What model year is this bike?
2020 mate
Simply astounding!! Thank you for taking us along on that hike. I doubt I could do it anymore; too many years wasted smoking (I finally quit 11 years ago). This video was probably my only chance to enjoy this wonder. Thank you for that.
Ah I made it smoking like a champ, and with a destroyed back lol. I am not even remotely athletic, and this was probably the most challenging physical thing I’ve done, but I did it! You can also take a horse/donkey up, some people did and I almost did haha. I paid to have the horse lug my backpack up, no way I could have done that with my back still recovering. Really cool, and always a way to do it if you want!
Beautiful AND affordable. I love it!
Yeah, it's hard to beat Guatemala!
Might be dangerous, but wow, what an awesome ride, with the best reward of that view at the end! Thanks, Ken!
It was such a cool ride, from Tikal to Atitlan was probably one of the most interesting rides of the trip, just riding through Guatemalan Countryside and I definitely got the impression that this route was far less travelled than the other one that goes by the waterfalls. Great memories!
What name the border please ?
I’m pretty sure it was “Guasaule” crossing from Honduras, it was a while ago now but I was heading to Leon and I think that’s the crossing I used 😬🤞🏻
The whole episode was one big bucketful of Wow, but that truck at the ferry is another level. If you can, you should make a short of that and throw it on youtube. Thanks, Ken!
Ah man I was so freaked out lol. Driver of the truck never really acknowledged or said anything to me for the whole hour standing around afterwards lol. Yeah I may look at doing a short again, I believe I tried for this but the issue is shorts are vertical and cut off a good bit of the screen, so it’s not really understandable that I’m on a motorcycle waiting for a ferry when a truck almost takes me out, it’s just a bunch of movement and yelling haha. May be a work-around
I'm not surprised they set up a rudimentary speed trap in Tikal. After all, it's been happening for a long long time, starting with a dude holding a radar gun was catching incoming space rebels! Leafcutter ants? That was very cool, as well as the ruins. Funny that the steep hill you climbed could possibly house a ruin under it. Just needs to be excavated. Thanks, Ken!
This was such a cool place, not to be missed. Felt like a national geographic explorer!
I can see where that rally raid level 2 suspension maybe starts to come in handy when hitting those water filled pot holes. Great to see you successfully navigating those border crossings. Thanks Ken!
Yeah the suspension has been a good-send. Not necessary, but made life a LOT easier in some places. Borders get “easier” as you go (as in, you expect the confusion and chaos so it become easier to deal with) 😂
Noted ... braaap right through Belize. Wow, $8/litre CAD is crazy expensive for gas. I can't imagine the cost of the lodgings. Thanks, Ken!
Yeah it was insanely expensive after mexico. Depending on time/budget I hear the coast and islands of Belize are just stunning. But when I was there it was high season and just no way I could afford any extra time in Belize lol
i own a older triumph tiger and dont trust taking it out like this but soon as i get a new adv bike i cant wait to start my adventures i really want to do a continental us round trip when the time comes living vicariously through youtubers currently until i can go from around my area to across the country!
They say the best bike to do the trip on is the one you have now 😉
I’m going on this in 7 weeks and so scared but excited
Ah no need to be scared, the crossing can be a bit rough but whatever that’s the price you pay. Will be something you never forget
@ I don’t care if it’s choppy (struggling to walk, not allowed outside that’s fine) like most videos I’ve seen but what I’m really scared of is if it’s completely wild and very very high waves causing the entire ship to dive back and forth and the deck flooded like in the news, I pray that doesn’t happen but I will be going anyway
I have watched a lot of your videos and in one of them you mentioned you had to replace the water the water pump two times before it hit 30,000 km have you ever had any issues with it later and how many kilometers do you have on it now?
I replaced the water pump for the second time around 30,000kms in Los Angeles, right before I crossed into Mexico, October 2022. Zero problems with the water pump or anything else Honda OEM related since then. Bike currently has around 86,000kms 👍
@kenshapperttravelstheworld8845 I'm getting a 2016 cb500x tomorrow for 5000 cad it has less than 10k on it
I didn't realize there were Mayan ruins along the coast. It's easy to imagine life there would have been paradise, before the Europeans showed up. Thanks Ken!
It’s absolutely spectacular around there, fascinating to imagine what life must have been like!
Uxmal had amazing buildings for such a small population. I'm guessing it was actually sizably bigger. Sorry about your back. I probably would have stayed put at your hotel in Merida for a few days, until healed a bit, but maybe that wasn't possible in your case. Thanks Ken!
Yeah, in hindsight I definitely should have just stayed put a few days to rest up. Ah well, places to go and people to see lol
It has been amazing watching your ride.. your knowledge and love for adventure.. enjoy your time off the bike.. ❤❤
That’s amazing, thank you for your kind words! I will enjoy a little break, but hopefully that is it haha. I love being on the road with the bike exploring!
Amazing. Safe travels
Thank you!
You can't get me in guatemala, even for free beer!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Not exactly sure what that means mate, but cheers! Guatemala was a great country btw
WOW! Brazil!!!
Amazing!
Holy jumping Jahosafats!! That is insane!!
Boy, haven't heard that phrase in a long time!
So confusing lol
Did your hotel "Naj Kin" really mean "Let's go to the cinema"? What an odd name! Just before you pulled up to the hotel I was very surprised, and a little sad to see you discovered where Herbie the Love Bug finally ended up. Lastly ... awesome twisties!!
Haha, I’m not really sure about the hotel to be honest, this was quite a while ago in travel time memories lol. But the road and area was quite an interesting one for sure!
You cut a bike off , didn’t let the pedestrians cross , then met a bike that nearly hit you , let’s be honest you were in too much of a hurry , 😊
Ah yeah, I wasn’t only in a hurry to escape the madness of the border and get out of notorious ciudad del este, it was also extremely chaotic and confusing! I own every mistake I do in this video or any others, but you can’t really imagine how chaotic and confusing this border is (unless maybe you’ve already done it!)
The high heat & humidity is no bueno for me. You should get a nice break when you get down to B.A. Looking forward to watching that content. Safe travels, buddy.
Yeah anything over 30 degrees isn’t much fun, but I’ll take the heat over an unrideable Canadian winter any day!!!
Yikes, crazy border crossing, Ken, especially with all the traffic and heat! Glad to see you are hopefully out of the rains, and your trip south to Buenos Aires goes well! As a CB500x owner too, I'm rooting for this bike to continue on for you with no problems :)
Thanks! It’s been a great little bike, and since getting a couple little wrinkles out of the way during the first year or so of ownership (which was admittedly frustrating) I’ve had zero problems related to Honda reliability or build quality.
Good Night friends! The Iguaçu waterfalls are very beautiful and giants..Good trip for you man! This Che Guevara cap, simply wonderful..
Great trip for sure! Thank you. And I actually got the hat in China, like a type 65 replica. Interesting that it is now associated with different communist regimes on opposite sides of the world! Everyone thought it was a Che hat, and it’s really just the hat that folds up the smallest and gets crushed the least haha
Good night!Kkkkkk I was joking!But.."Hasta la victoria siempre!"❤
Hello, thank you very much for the video. I am currently living in Costa Rica (near Panama) and would like to enter Panama with my motorcycle for a vacation. Did I understand correctly that I just need insurance approved by the Costa Rican police, and then I’m free to go? Best regards, Markus
Honestly man I don’t really know or recall for sure. Every border was slight variations of the same thing, but I don’t recall if I needed insurance for Panama or what the process was (this video was filmed a while ago and I don’t remember lol). I suspect that if you are living in Costa Rica and have a plated and insured bike there the process will be somewhat different to mine, and you should be good to go, but I don’t honestly know mate
Wow … those waterfalls are amazing .. Incredible… Thanks for sharing Bro. Safe travels. 👊
Yeah pretty impressive for sure man, and not to take away from the amazing spectacle in any way, but it think I was slightly less excited to go and impressed to see than most because of how many times we’ve been to and seen Niagara lol
@ lol that’s awesome bro 💯👏👊
Thought you'd skip the Cataratas, man. Hope you visited the Argentinian side as well. It's mindblowing! Nice hat too, eh!
I almost skipped it due to timing and route planning (and living around the corner from Niagara Falls), but once I realized I would have to turn around and backtrack to BA i couldn’t miss it a second time!
