Ken Shappert Travels The World
Canada
เข้าร่วมเมื่อ 7 ก.ค. 2020
Welcome to my TH-cam Channel, I'm Ken Shappert.
My whole life I've been passionate about motorcycles (and all motorized vehicles, really) and equally curious about the world. I've owned a number of motorcycles, including several Bultaco's to Ducati's, and travelled fairly extensively to over 40 countries around the world.
I am now combining my passions and exploring the world on the back of my trusty steed Molly, my 2020 Honda CB500X modified for long distance travel. I've learned that I enjoy making videos sharing my experiences with and (hopefully!) entertaining you.

Riding a Motorcycle in Brazil's Monsoon Season | Soaked to the Bone |
My time in Brazil has coincided with the Brazilian monsoon season so I've yet to get a dry day, and usually end the day soaking wet. Day after day of this started becoming difficult, putting on soaking wet riding gear every morning. I've started too smell very bad! But even through all of that, Brazil is such a fascinating and interesting country. I've had to, or at least chosen to, stay on the pavement as it is just the wettest climate I've ever experienced. I had planned to spend a bunch of time relaxing on the beaches on the Brazilian coast, but when I got to Florianopolis it was raining for the foreseeable future. So off to the next beach town I went. The rain followed. There was no escaping the rain so I just passed all the cool seaside towns of Itapema, Balneario Camboriu and many more without stopping. As I was not able to enjoy the beach I decided to go back up into the mountains to Curitiba and do some needed motorcycle repairs.

Brazil's Best Motorcycle Ride | Through the Mountains and Then Serra do Rio do Rastro |
มุมมอง 50516 ชั่วโมงที่ผ่านมา
This was the best day of riding that I have done in Brazil. Serra do Rio do Rastro is almost certainly the most famous motorcycle ride in Brazil, with countless steep switchbacks as you ascend/descend along the mountainside, surrounded by lush mountains. Unfortunately this was monsoon season in Brazil so I didn't get any days free of rain and was usually soaked. This meant that I was not able t...

One of the most popular vacation region for Brazilians, and home to one of the most famous routes in the country, Brazil's Rota Romantic (Romantic Route) in the southern province of Rio Grande do Sul runs for around 200kms through beautiful rolling hills and mountains, along the route of the original German settlers from the early 1800s. It is fascinating riding through what feels like Bavarian...

Crossing into Brazil with my motorcycle from Uruguay at Jaguarão is an interesting experience. The Uruguayan side is a really weird border town full of duty free stores and bright signs, with people buying all sorts of things. Once you cross over the (really cool) bridge and are in Brazil, nobody stops you. When entering Brazil you can just ride into Brazil with no customs or immigration, I had...

Crossing from Argentina into Uruguay by motorcycle. This was a fairly straightforward border, although it is not set-up for non Mercosur vehicles so there is a tiny bit of confusion to get the bike stamped out of Argentina, you must walk back to the Argentinian entry booth to get the bike stamped out. 3,000km's, Ushuaia to Buenos Aires, Argentina | RN3 | The Most Boring Road in the World |

Riding Argentinas RN3 from Ushuaia to Buenos Aires is 3,000kms of windswept road and for almost the whole length is a contender for the most boring road in the world. There are only a handful of towns and cities along its length and for the first 2,000km's or so there is usually only gas stations every 150-250km's. Unfortunately there was a fuel shortage in Argentina while I was doing this ride...

Gee man, what a pity you came during rainy season. It rains every day, specially when El Niño is active - like it was this year. Florianópolis is one of the most beautiful cities in Brazil. Literally dozens of beaches! You can stay there for like 10 days doing different things everyday. And Balneário Camboriú is a pathetic place where people think they live in Dubai... haha. But you managed to ride though BR-101, which is wild during the holiday season. Congrats, man! Greetings from Curitiba!
Yeah I loved Brazil and the people and the food but I can’t lie, the monsoon season took a little bit of the joy out of trying to enjoy riding in the country lol. Not all, but definitely some. I was gonna spend days in Floripa and explore for example, but it just didn’t make sense because it was pouring rain everyday. But, these things happen; I can’t be everywhere at the best time of year and I’ve been very lucky with weather on the trip otherwise. It’s all part of the adventure! My most enjoyable parts of my time in Brazil didn’t make it into my videos, it was all the time I spent with people, making friends and being welcomed into peoples houses, eating food etc. I now have a great reason to go back (in the good weather) and visit people and do what I originally wanted to (-Manaus-Venezuela). Next video I actually start in Curitiba, the guys at “Motosavages” got me sorted out asap with a chain issue, quick and cheap. Good guys. Great country, and probably the most moto obsessed in South America, along with Colombia.
@@kenshapperttravelstheworld8845 That's cool! I know Motosavages and their service is fantastic. Pity you had these issues. If you come back to the south of Brazil (preferently in winter, the dry season!), let me know too, man
Felt for you in this ride, Ken...the rain, traffic, cold. I hope your future days will be an improvement! Maybe some Lysol spray for the helmet liner?
Haha, yeah it wasn’t the most enjoyable few days ride, but all part of the adventure. I’ve found out it rains everyday in that part of Brazil during that time of year 😬. I eventually washed the helmet liner, just wasn’t a lot of point when it was immediately getting soaked and dirty every morning lol
Loved the first three minutes of surfing the mountain roads, with the perfect music/video combo! Crappy about the Lambo, but all part of the adventure. I have no idea why you don't have more likes or more comments on this video, but I'm here ... feeding the algorithm! Thanks, Ken!
Yeah California was pretty cool, and the Lambo was amazing; I got it back for a few more days after the breakdown and really enjoyed it haha. Yeah, TH-cam is so competitive, everyone with a camera and bike wants to get paid for their vacation hahaha. I accepted long ago that it wasn’t a job or a money-maker, just a “small” project for fun. It’s good to actually review and use the footage taken while riding, most people (myself included before) record videos and then never look at them ever again lol
Sounds like u did a lot of traveling before your adventures on the 500x, heard you mention couple times you had been there before.
Yeah I’ve been quite fortunate and have visited about half the countries on my trip before, including Bolivia. But I’ve found there is a vast difference between visiting a country for a few weeks on vacation, using planes and busses vs riding your motorcycle solo in country for months at a time. The latter is far more rewarding, if at times challenging haha
You are adding too much spash music in your videos, nice music but brazilian songs would be good as well, once your are here. There is another Serra very bnear from there which is very very famous too. Serra do Corvo Branco. You could do both of them in the same day. There others like that near from there (about 400km), Serra da Macaca, Serra Rastro da Serpente, Serra da Graciosa. Some good Brazilian songs, you can find here, Bossa Nova instrumentals songs.. th-cam.com/video/DyZh4H2xUtA/w-d-xo.html
Hey, thanks for the recommendations. A couple people mentioned Corvo Branco. Unfortunately I don’t post these in the same few days I’m around the area so I usually can’t take people up on recommendations unless they are quite distant in the future route. Also unfortunately at this time was the craziest rain I’ve ever experienced, for weeks on end. I felt less inclined to go exploring when I was just soaking wet all day. But I plan to go back when it isn’t monsoon season lol, would like to see more and do the road to Manaus
I know it's all subjective, but the music this video was WAY better than last!! I felt almost guilty sipping a beer so cold it had ice flakes in it while watching you melt at Salvation Mountain (what an odd, but amazing place). Thanks, Ken!
Ah yeah, the music gets better and worse as it goes on lol. Sound/music is the hardest part of all this for me (sometimes the mic works and sometimes doesn’t lol)
Route 89A added to my notebook. Pretty much the definition of twisties!! I believe this is the first time you have added music in post. Great first effort, the free music selections are somewhat limiting. Thanks, Ken!
Yeah it was a good road. Someone commented on this video that it’s actually the SECOND best road in Arizona, but wouldn’t share the best one 😔. Yeah I added music, the bane of my existence 😂🤣. Some people say add music, some people say no music, then the music is too loud or not loud enough lol, or they don’t like the type. And then trying to pick the right (non copyrighted) song, esh. And I have to be careful, if TH-cam picks up a copyrighted sound in the background for just a few seconds, they remove the audio for the whole video 😬. So I AM adding music to make it less boring/not just wind noise, but it’s the hardest part of the videos lol
@@kenshapperttravelstheworld8845 One CB500X rider I follow in Britain puts up a clef note on screen when playing music so his followers can mute while the music is playing. When the clef note disappears they unmute and hear commentary. I think that's ingenious.
BIENVENIDOS A PERÚ.
Saludos hermano
It's great to see you riding your motorcycle through my state, Rio Grande do Sul, and doing practically the same stretch of road that I did on my motorcycle and in the same conditions. If you're still near that place, Rio do Rastro, try to pass by Corvo Branco. It's close to a very beautiful place go to the island of Florianopolis.
And what a state it is! Not what I expected from Brazil at all, up in the mountains it’s like Germany or Switzerland haha. But I do believe you have the best churrasco and I love it. Florianopolis is up next. Unfortunately I didn’t time my visit the best and I got the rainy season and so experienced rain like I never have before, absolutely soaked to the bone for literal weeks 😂. That dirt road is a very cool ride, and unplanned on my part. It was a very cool day, the only thing I regret is not having a better view at Rio do Rastro. But there is always next time 😉
@@kenshapperttravelstheworld8845 Corvo Branco is in the state of Santa Catarina, close to where you stopped. If you look for the name of the road I'm referring to, it's SC-370. It looks a lot like Rio do Rastro and has a really cool story because the mountain was opened up so the road could be built. Have a good trip through Brazil
Well ... that was vertigo inducing. I would say your camera work is on point! Thanks Ken!
Every time I see this thumbnail and video I think of Forrest Gump lol
Great video, Ken! Really fascinating to see the Brazil countryside as it is much more diverse than I had imagined. Keep dry and safe travels!
Yeah, me too man! Brazil has been much more fascinating and beautiful than I had imagined, and yes most of that is down to the diversity of people/places and food!!
The music and video were a great match up, really enjoyed!
Cheers Terry!
You have had some amazing rides but this one right here takes the prize, WOW!
It was a highlight for sure, absolutely epic!
Well, this video I learned unicorns are real and they come from Knoxville! That, and you seemed to have picked up an American accent while picking your way down your friend's driveway. Your friend has a beautiful property!! Thanks for the work to put this video together!
Yeah it was a really cool place, I love going there. Haha, I was super nervous going down the driveway as getting up it was quite an event 😬. Looking back now it’s funny as I’ve since done considerably worse riding with (mostly) better results
Lush and green requires wet, wet, wet. I'm happy you looked on the bright side of that run through the parkway. Funny how long your helmet cam shook side to side after that truck pulled out in front of you. The driver definitely saw your opinion! What model GPS are you running?
Yeah I was a bit disappointed that my ride down the famous parkway was quite wet, but it made it very atmospheric. My GPS is a Garmin Zumo XT. I loved it for the first year, it worked perfectly. Then I started having problems with the hardwire keeping it charged so I started using my 12v plug and USB cable. Eventually that started having problems also. Now I have to charge it inside and when I put it on the bike I don’t even get a full day out of it, it keeps turning on and off (even with both hardwire and 12V/USB plugged in) and is more frustrating than helpful at this point. If I was to do it again I would just get a quad lock and a cheap secondary android phone, have iOverlander, google maps offline and maps.me installed, get a SIM card when entering a new country (but mostly make sure I have my daily route downloaded before heading off). And that would end up cheaper than the Garmin plus buying the South America maps. The more you know 💫
Well, now I'm torn about going to big cities when I do my trip. I might have to pick and choose. Thanks, Ken, I appreciate your videos!
Yeah that’s the beauty, you do what you want and when 😉
🥨🥨🥩🥩🍖🍖🎅🎅🤶🤶
Haha. Porto Alegre ("Happy Port") is nicknamed Forno Alegre ("Happy oven") for its *pleasant* temperatures, specially in summer...
It’s a very beautiful (and surprisingly temperate) area!
Coming from small town Alberta, I plan on avoiding all big cities when I do a similar trip, so thank you for your big cojones and showing us the sites in the big apple!
I can completely understand why people on these trips avoid major cities, and truth be told they aren’t the most fun to ride a motorcycle through (and some are potentially dangerous). But there is something fascinating to me about world class cities and I felt it would be a shame to ride by and not see some of the most famous cities in the world; NY, LA, CDMX, Medellín, Lima, Buenos Aires, Rio de Janeiro etc. All have a different feel/culture/food, and make for great contrasts with the remote wilderness experienced. But to each their own, that’s the beauty of a trip like that, you get to do what you want when you want!!
Jaguarão is pronounced similar to zhag-wah-WRONG
If you enjoy hearing me butcher the names of places/people/things then click on any of my other videos 😂🤣 🙏🏼
Great video and narration. Thanks and enjoy Brasil.
Thanks for showing the dichotomy of the classes in Chicago and Detroit. Hard to watch at times, but worth it. I've heard cooling vests are the way to go in hot weather, which you were basically doing in a crude way. Any idea why motorcycles weren't allowed to cross the border into Canada at that crossing? Good video, Ken!!
Yeah I could definitely have used a cooling vest! That was the hottest and most difficult heat I’ve ever ridden in; and that includes all of South America!!! No idea why motos aren’t allowed in the tunnel, it seem to be a thing in some places. If you keep watching I end up in another spot of bother trying to go through a tunnel motos aren’t allowed in 😂
wow
🙏🏼
I felt your trepidation about the border crossing into Brazil, Ken...lack of signs, a new language, even the correct money for the toll! And am happy it seemed to work out for you...I can't wait to follow along on your adventures in Brazil, thanks for sharing!
Cheers man. Yeah it was strange, I’m very used to visiting foreign countries and not speaking the language; no big deal. But after travelling for almost two years in countries where I can speak the language, I felt surprisingly nervous entering into Brazil where don’t k ow anything lol. It felt like a real adventure again 😂🤣
Funny how we can't talk right at 40C, whether it's minus or plus 40! Also, "I'm feeling faint" and jumps back on the bike!! Lol, what else is a biker to do?! Loving your trip so far, thanks!
Ah, I have problems talking right whatever the temperature 😂
Riding with no helmet happens first. Next you'll be fully armed!
Keep watching haha 😂

Definitely keep riding north. Take the ferry over from BA to Montevideo (also a cool city) and visit the Mano de Punta del Este, then ride north up to Brazil. Brazilians are by far the most warm and welcoming people I met on my moto trip around South America- you'll have a great time there. Stop at the tri-border area and visit Iguaçu Falls. Ride the BR-101, a popular coastal road, to Rio and visit the usual tourist spots (Christo Redentor, Ipanema, etc). Ride north to Belem and take a 5 day ferry down the Amazon river to Manaus then ride north to Venezuela. Hopefully you can get a visa. Venezuela is another country that surprised- really hospital people and amazing scenery (also incredibly cheap and nearly free petrol). Visit Parque Nacional Canaima and Angle Falls (tallest waterfall in the world). Still so much to see and do!
Thanks so much for your recommendations. I feel like I could spend my whole life riding around and still not see everything the world has to offer!
@@kenshapperttravelstheworld8845 Google my user name to find my blog. Lots more recommendations, photos, routes, etc. I'm re-living my trip through your videos. Glad to see all is going well and you're enjoying it.
RN3 is by far the most boring and windy ride in the world. Also amazing how some things haven't really changed.. When I rode from Ushuaia to BA, that same station was out of petrol and I had to use my spare 4L jerry can to make it to the next station. Good times in Argentina.
The wind was incredible! Never felt anything like that. Funny that the same station was out of fuel haha. I LOVE Argentina
im getting my 2014 cb500 tomorrow, any pointers or suggested mods?
Just ride as much as you can/want to. Don’t waste money on pointless mods you don’t need. If something seems off/uncomfortable then you can look at a mod/repair for that. Otherwise best money is spend making sure you got good tires/brakes, and rider training if you haven’t done so (not sure if your new or experienced rider)
And be safe!
The penguins alone do it for me! Beautiful!❤
My favorites also!
Great video. I confess I flew from Ushuaia to Buenos Aires. From what I see of the roads I'm glad I did (I bussed Ruta 40). Enjoy BA. What a great city.
Yeah, it wasn’t exactly full of things to do/see lol. Buenos Aires is definitely an amazing city
What about a side trip to Uruguay ?
Stay tuned 😉

Laurentian View Dairy used to be a highlight
Ah, gotta love a beef stick
Are you coming to Brazil soon? Or have you already been here? hehe. Indeed the RN 3 is a pain in the ass. But one entirde day in Puerto Madryn should be great to do some whalewatching, see the penguins at the pinguinera...
Yeah, I’m a little behind posting the videos so I’ve already had some Brazilian adventures 😉. Great country. I skipped puerto Madryn because it was just so insanely expensive to stay there compared to any other cities; and I’d already seen lots of whales/penguins. But it wasn’t actually that bad, there is always something interesting on the road!
What a great adventure. Do a Ted Simon and head to Australia next. There's a book you need to write!
The world was a different place in Ted Simons day!
Much much different world. His second go around he found out how much the world had changed, and I suspect it’s changed almost as much again in the interim
I’d love to see everywhere, but Australia I think will be the last place I get to; the requirements and processes for entering Australia by motorcycle are almost prohibitive
