As someone who can only watch a few episodes of Rick and Morty before becoming quite depressed - it’s refreshing to have something with as much passion and care put into it like R&M, with out the same intensity of dark comedy

The whole show is just a pleasant time and it was insanely refreshing. So much so that it made me realize how it's sad that it's so unique in that sense.

I gotta say that I really like the fact that the show is only 10-12 minutes long. Most shows nowadays really stretch themselves out to be an hour long and they lack the plot or the writing to really justify it.

It's August 2024 and this is the first time that I've ever heard of this show.

Particularly in season one I think Smiling Friends was influenced more by Spongebob than The Simpsons. The gags with the hyper-detailed stills of Shrimp and Pim are right out of Spongebob episodes. They get me every time. Also Pim being naive and nice the whole time and not becoming cynical or defeated is refreshing. The lack of friction in Pim and Charlie’s friendship also feels true to real life.

Honestly it’s so good, I wish I could watch it again for the first time. I tell EVERYONE to watch it.

Smiling Friends and Gumball are my go-to shows because of how wacky but fun to watch they are. Even when they get into a dark subject matter it doesn't feel like they're just doing it to be edgy and "haha! dark humor is hilarious without substance". They put actual thought into their comedy and that's what makes them so entertaining to watch for me. Plus the voice acting and animation make the characters and their worlds so fun to watch.

I found Smiling Friends refreshing for the same reasons outlined here. I'm not sure it's influencing other adult animation or changing the genre as a whole, though of course would be delighted to hear of any other shows that are being influenced by it if people know any?

I also just wanna point out that most death scenes in smiling friends don't linger. They happen fast and if they do linger on it there's usually a purpose, like endearing you to Mip just before the reveal that he's a stalker, or the forest demon's death being the punchline to a joke threaded through the episode about Charlie not wanting to dress up for halloween because of how people react to costumes. It's the opposite of that one family guy scene where peter gets his leg mangled or something and he just lays on the floor going "Tsssst- ahhhh....!" for like a solid minute

But it’s just dudes. No women.

I remember watching these streams at the end of the pandemic.

sometimes family guy uses this type humor I mean one of them is basically a smart Peter griffin and I love sarcastic humor so this show worked for me

Smiling friends is adult show without being childishly evel of edgy. Its still fairy edgy with violence and so but atleast main characters acts as humans and not edgy teenagers who think being assholes is cool and funny.

Coming to the comments is helping me understand my recent obsession with this show, its not particularly funny or humorus, but its just upbeat and happy

Zach isn’t even voice s ring he just speaks and that’s how Charlie came to life, this show is top tier and a game changer

Lately, I really enjoy the subtle comedy of a person being unconditionally supportive and understanding of everyone around them. Maybe it’s because it’s so uncommon these days. Ryan Reynolds does it a lot.
