THE TENSION ENGINE - Unusual Tension/Horror Instrument
This is THE TENSION ENGINE.
Heavily inspired by Mark Korven's Apprehension Engine, the Tension Engine utilizes electronic aspects, bow-able parts, and strike-able metals. This is my solution for scoring suspenseful moments and evoking unsettling emotions. This project took about a week to complete and was done with less than $100.
The reason for this project came from the need to expand my horror/tension sound palette, in preparation for an animated horror short I am scoring - "Burning Rope" by Juan Belardi. The final instrument turned out better than I had expected, so I will use this instrument for scoring future projects that I see fit.
I highly recommend you build one yourself! It was super easy to make, and can be infinitely customizable to your wishes. Feel free to reach out with any question, or comments. Thank you for watching, and listening to The Tension Engine!

It was a joy to spend time and thoughtfully score this cue, and one of high quality that is hard to come by for a student. It was bitter sweet to finish it; the journey was the main highlight of my days spent working on it. Thank you to Spitfire Audio for the amazing opportunity! 4:05 [score only] #westworldscoringcompetition2020 Enjoy-

I love the idea of adding the daxophone I had thought of it, but I didn’t do it yet, but the sound is just unreal beautiful the coiled aluminum was interesting. Plus I just love the way it looks.

Would be really sweet if you made a sample pack or just turn it into a vst instrument. It would still leave room for expression and arrangement. Many people including me'self would be interested.

Not entirely sure how I ended up here: praise be to The Algorithm, for it moves in mysterious ways. This was really satisfying to watch, both sonically and from a actually low budget project problem-solving perspective. I've abandoned so many projects because I've tried to over-engineer things, gave up when things didn't go to plan, or realising an "cheap" build usually ended up requiring a ton of tools or materials that the builder just assumes people would have on hand. This really shows how much you can achieve by keeping things simple and being imaginative with limited resources. Awesome job!

Just a wood stain; couldn't tell you the exact color, but it's just a stock Home Depot wood stain!

This was great! And well done with your project. As a fellow minor tinkerer (with some years on you), I silently chuckled at some of your solutions to various problems you came up against. Whilst many wouldn't work for a commercial product, they were perfectly fine for your personal diy project - a testament to your creativity and problem solving ability. A most refreshing reminder to be circumspect when prioritising areas to strive for perfection.

as both a builder and a musician, this is ABOSLUTELY AMAZING. You put so much effort into this, and for a person with no electronics experience, you did a damn fine job. I love the iphone box idea!
