Short story:
Cullen Montgomery Baker (1835-1869) was a notorious outlaw in the post-Civil War Reconstruction era, operating in East Texas, Arkansas, and Louisiana. A Confederate veteran, he refused to accept the changes brought by Reconstruction, targeting freedmen, Union sympathizers, and carpetbaggers. Known for his ambushes and violent tactics, Baker gained infamy as a ruthless gunman. His actions symbolized the unrest and resistance of the era. While some saw him as a hero of Southern defiance, others condemned his brutality. Baker met his end in 1869, betrayed and killed by former associates. His legacy remains a blend of legend and infamy in the lore of the American South.
