    This is not the whole story. You missed a very important part !! The air tubes that run up to the mixing chamber . When clogged with a spider web or dirt dauber your lantern will never work well.. Most lanterns have 1 or 2 air tubes. The only ones that do not have them are the Petromax and clones of it. They use a air gap between the generator and the mixing chamber. All lanterns that I know of take out side air in the right amount to burn and make light. I hope this helps somebody . For the Petromax the air gap should be about 14 mm for a clean burn. And that will change over time so check it when you fill it up.

    It's shown that the bullet arrives far after the guy dodges. It could be possible if he moves out of the way before the old man pulls the trigger. But it's not what's shown in the scene, so we end up with a really time delayed bullet.

    They don't burn kerosene very well. Coleman fuel is much more refined and has a much lower flash point than kerosene.

    The bullet wouldn’t travel forever. Just like anything launched into space wouldn’t. When you say that people assume that means it goes into a straight line forever like a laser. That’s not the case it’d behave exactly like a rocket. It’s no different whatsoever except it’s lighter and likely moving faster. But gravity would pull it in whether it’s an asteroid, moon, planet, star. It’d hit something eventually. But it wouldn’t be traveling in a straight line. But like every other physical object in space that isn’t light and whatever dark matter is.

    Should note that there are significant differences between a kerosene lantern and a white gas lantern. White gas does not require preheating the generator, rather it draws fuel vapor off the top of the tank from that air hole discussed in the beginning of the video. Opening the valve 1/4 turn opens the air hole while keeping the fuel port in the bottom of the tank (mostly) closed.

  • @isettech
    @isettech หลายเดือนก่อน

    FYI, the annimation shows a gasoline lantern, usualy run on "White Gas" lantern fuel. The kerosene version has a cup under the generator for a small pool of Alochol to preheat the generator to produce vapor. Without preheat, the lantern would spit liquid and result in a large smokey flame and would be very difficult to start. Coleman brand made very few Kerosene lanterns. They primarily built white gas and Propane lanterns. Do not put lamp oil or kerosene in a gasoline lantern. It will be almost impossible to properly light, and when saturated with the oil spray, is likely to result in a large oil fire when it does start. The animation of the starting is in error. The video claims the valve closes the fuel off at the bottom of the tank. This is incorrect. The valve stem when screwed down seals the fuel. The rod that extends to the bottom of the tank only partially blocks the fuel and is used for starting the lantern. As the fuel flow is restricted, air is drawn down and mixes with the fuel going to the fuel valve and generator. This mix helps atomize the fuel to aid in starting the lantern and prevents flooding with too much fuel. As the generator heats in starting, more fuel vaporizes inside the generator, reducing the flow rate. As the flow rate drops, less air is drawn into the generator. This is when the lantern begins to burn bright. Then the fuel valve can be fully opened, resulting in no longer drawing air into the generator. The Kerosene version of the lamp works the same, except before opening the fuel valve, the generator has to be preheated by filling the cup with alcohol and burning that mostly out, then lighting the lantern. The Kerosene version does not have an air bleed in the tank and fuel restriction rod. They must be preheated to properly start it. Hope this helps. Disclaimer, Own and have used many of these lamps growing up and camping in my younger days. If you get one of these lanterns, look online for the proper starting for the version you are trying to run. You do not want a fuel spill and the resulting fireball from slow starting.

      @Science-Bytes Thank you for a reply that was gracious. Unlike my biting criticism. You video was excellent, apart from the music, and I really wanted to finish it but couldn't due to the music. You could not know this, but around 5% of viewers have CAPD, Chronic Auditory Processing Disorder. This condition makes it difficult to understand linguistic input when accompanied by any extraneous sounds, like music. To me, it is like trying to make out what you are saying from across the room at a loud party. May I suggest that if you must have music, limit it to a 30 second intro. I and my fellow CAPD sufferers thank you.

    I’ve had a Coleman® lantern, a classic based on this design, for approaching 50 years. I have an aftermarket igniter which might be a friction or piezo-electric type device, and I always carry at least three spare mantels with it. It’s built like a tank, not too heavy, works in all weather conditions, and a can of white gas lasts forever. My wife and I are downsizing but this lovely and faithful piece of gear stays with us until we are unable to operate it. I can’t count the emergencies we’ve helped others out of when this lamp illuminated the entire situation, and other gadgets failed. I love tech too, but there are some irreplaceable basics like a lamp, a knife, a shovel, and a tarp that one’s aways great full to have at hand!

    These kerosene lanterns are such a pain on the ass to use. Your much better off getting a gasoline lantern, you dont have to use alcohol and preheat the generator every time you want to light it. There are also propane models that you dont even have to pump up, I own all three types and I recommend the gasoline one for outdoor use, and the propane one for indoor use. I honestly can't recommend the kerosene type unless you are in a situation where you only have access to kerosene. Kerosene ones are just too much of a hassle and unlike the gasoline ones that are brighter then the propane ones they don't have any advantages over the gas model.

    Not mentioned is the Aida type blowtorch starter. The German Aida lanterns have a miniature blowtorch powered by the pressure tank. The torch is lit and blows directly on the generator to heat it enough to vaporize the fuel. Once the generator is hot enough, the vapor will light the mantle, which will keep the generator hot enough to run, and then you shut off the blowtorch.
