What time of year is “today”?
Hey @indycog, The best time to cut a hedge back hard depends on the type of hedge and the season: Deciduous hedges Cut in midwinter when the hedge is dormant and leafless. Evergreen hedges Cut in mid-spring when the hedge is actively growing and the risk of frost has passed. Native hedges Cut in February or March to avoid disturbing nesting birds. Cutting between March and September can also reduce berries for overwintering birds. Informal hedges Cut after the hedge has flowered to encourage flowering the following year. Temperate climates Avoid cutting in early to late autumn when there are many fungi spores in the air that can infect the hedge. Hope that helps!
Stihl advertis that the Stihl HLA 86 trimmer cane handle up to 26mm branches. But it looked as if you had to use a polesaw on holly less thick than that. What do you find is the max size that the Stihl HLA 86 can handle?
Pete, honestly I have no idea, worth researching further online. I generally reach for whatever tool, will achieve the task efficiently within my collection. Sharpening the blades and ensuring regular lubricating, put's less strain on the motor too.
This is fantastic mate, thank you!
Cheers Gen1sis, a bit of a dry subject, but a CRM is the way to go.
Looks like a good tool. I think I will borrow one at my dealer and try out the weight before I buy it to avoid surprises.
UnfinishedSymphony, yer it's always helpful if you can trial one first.
The tip guard is more than annoying and mines back in the shop for repair after a couple of months 😡
graham, I can understand that. I've heard of people removing guards from strimmer's etc with the same reasoning. My personal take is, I keep mine on. They're enough things trying to undermine our health in this industry already.
Mines a year old , it's on its 3rd motor, 2nd Bowden cable and now back in for a new head casing, I do cut a lot of hedges but this machine is very poor , my recently purchased HSA 100 is back in for repair at the moment, my FSA 90 strimmer is only homeowner quality and power, but my MSA 161t chainsaw is really good as is my old HLA85 which I recently rebuilt the head, which is just as well as I've invested about a £1000 in batteries so we can cut all day 😎
There's no way it's gone wrong that much in a year. I'm a professional gardener and mines 3 years old, never had a thing go wrong with it and it gets used all the time. Your either extremely unlucky or exaggerating
@@scotttarry4909 it had gone wrong that much I'm a " professional gardener" and this time of year cut hedges most days , sometimes all day that's why I have 5 batteries
@@scotttarry4909 just got the hla 86 back used it most of the day , just waiting for it to break down again, , hsa 100 still being repaired, fencing the weekend so no worries 😂
@@grahamwatson6570 probably make sense to buy a petrol one again then, be cheaper for you in the long run if it breaks down everyday
@@scotttarry4909gone wrong again, motor squeeling like a pig ,,new motor I recon, take it back in next week,,great at the height of the cutting season 🤬
I have a long reach hedgecutter attachment for my Husqvarna 535LK combi . I never cut the tops of hedges from the ground , as you can't see the finish. Great for cutting wide hedges from a ladder though! Bought my first battery powered equipment a couple of weeks ago, and I'm not impressed!
What battery equipment did you buy?
tgs, I think moving from petrol to battery takes a little adjustment. 6 months later, I'm curious to hear whether you pushed through the pain barrier, are doing a hybrid approach or receded to what you knew?
Great review! Many thanks for posting.
Thanks berlewi, great to hear.
Crossbow Herbicide(2,4-D)can be used to control Horsetail. Glyphosate(Round Up) does nothing to Horsetail
gotsloco1810, thanks for commenting and letting us know about Crossbow.
Horsetail is unphased by any kind of herbicide, it comes back stronger than ever. But it sure loves to thrive in acidic soils. Regularly applying lime into the soil can reduce its growth significantly. Starving it from sunlight with a black tarp for a year is quite effective too.
Thanks for the comment yankis. I'll look further into the limestone solution further.
trouble is horsetail grows up to 7ft deep, even if you manage to kill it off, parts of the root can survive, like bindweed its a horrible invasive weed to get rid of, to be honest the only effective way to get rid of mares tail is to either excavate, which is really expensive, or constant applications of any glyphosate based weed killer
Thanks for commenting TKG, the battle continues!
Morning Jon. Does the blade fold down at all to make it slightly shorter?
Hi Laurence, I don't believe the blade does. It has a telescopic handle, which increases/decreases the overall length. 270-390cm according to the stihl 2023 GB catalogue. Overall I've got a lot of use out of it, just make sure you have adequate space to store and transport it.
Laurence, alternatively the HTA 66 has a total length of 240cm, but I don't think it's telescopic.
@@Basjoo Thanks 👍
Excellent description / video Jon. And great job in that lovely garden. It is a “semi-pro” quality machine, but probably best suited for lighter hedge cutting work, as opposed to the “gnarly” tougher stuff. The new ECHO dhc-2800r is generally better I think, being less “plasticky” in construction and with a far better twisty handle set-up. But it’s pricey!
It looks just as plasticky to me, it's possible that it is a stronger material though. I feel like the plastic on Stihl appears pretty flimsy and cheap.
@@MHumanoid Agreed. It’s really just an upgrade of the previous HSA86…but with a twisty handle & better gearbox greasing access. And it is quiter too. But I found the handle arrangement fiddly. The new Echo is better all round. Just can’t afford it yet!
My 100 did a couple of days box, a mornings beech and the gearbox broke , fixed under guarantee but still don't sound right my opinions on Stihl battery powered tools is getting very low as my HLA 86 is even worse being repaired many times in the last year 😡😡
@@grahamwatson6570 Yes, they’re definitely not built for tougher hedge jobs. Stihl will lose out to other manufacturers in the pro battery equipment category if they’re not careful. They seem to be pushing their profitable domestic products more and more, with TV ads etc. They shouldn’t forget or neglect their roots!
@@stevelanghorn1407 I wouldn't mind but have invested about a grand in batteries 😡
How does it handle cutting anything up to an inch+ , does it work in the rain, and what's the price of this setup?
I have been using mine to clear a field, I have been cutting quite a few 1-2 inch thick trees down with a near 3 inch one when I couldn't be bothered to go get a saw. It worked fine. Rain is fine but not used it in torrential rain as I don't need to. Price I got a second hand one but I would even pay the new price. The only annoying thing is that damn tip protector. I haven't even touched my petrol tools since going over to battery powered.
been gardening for 30 yrs.people want the job done for cheap as possible.if you were to mow large lawn, straighent edges and weed round and charge £30 quid they currently die of heart failure. Oh would it be so expensive. north west.
Hi David, thanks for commenting. We all have different attitudes to what we're willing to pay for something. I'm price-sensitive on certain products/services, whilst prioritising things other than cost, with others. I'm sympathetic to the challenges of consumer pressure, however, having originally set up the business in the NW UK, I can testify that better-paying clients can be found.
Minimum wage shouldn't come into it as gardeners have overheads just as do plumbers, electricians, mechanics etc. But the average homeowner need not pay a gardener with City and Guilds certificates for someone just to do a regular mow, weed a bed or trim a few shrubs. Of course, landscaping, tree surgery or garden design all come at a greater cost where nobody would even think of mentioning the minimum wage. Everyone should at least have a minimum charge. Say someone mows and edges for client A at £40 an hour and client B has a smaller lawn which takes 15 minutes, It shouldn't mean that client B should only expect to pay £10. A reason some charge at an agreed price for the job, whether being a lawn, hedge or total garden blitz etc.
Thanks for your comment Tony.
I don't use a crm, but do use a lot of google tools, calendar ect, google sheets for a detailed accounts, just block numbers of customers black listed, for invoices and another form of accounting I use a free version of zoho books, all are accessible from my phone, as for tracking profits, my spread sheet will cross reference prom previous years, also calculate the years tax and NI so I can put bits of cash aside so I have it ready.
Totally on board with you ethos and approach as it comes across. Subscribed few days ago and enjoyed everything so far. Can relate to most of what you have posted.Thank you.
Great to hear Marius, thanks for commenting.
low maintenance is just a sales tactic, if done properly it can really be a low maintenance garden, but you still have to maintain it to keep weeds at bay. removing stone and replacing membrane really would be the only option.
I generally find regardless of the membrane or surface, organic matter and seeds still build up on the surface over time. Creating greater effort to weed, rather than just in soil.
Found this to be very much lacking substance and unrelatable
Thanks for the comment CJ, feedback noted. All the best.
The need for assembly is governed by the size of the packaging. As Stihl's longest polesaw, fully assembled it would be over 3m - or about 10 feet - long which wouldn't fit in many vehicles and certainly wouldn't transport to retailers very well. Stihl's assembly video for the polesaw (th-cam.com/video/1kkYio1YEFQ/w-d-xo.html) suggests it would take 12 minutes to complete the assembly and is describes by them as "easy". The fact you say it took "several hours" to do it simply highlights your utter mechanical incompetence.
@ianmackenzie8584, the link for assembly is featured in my description above and also mentioned in my video, for other people to benefit from. As a professional product, I suspect it would regularly need to be transported, but I may be incorrect. "Utter mechanical incompetence", that's a bit harsh, have I somehow caused you some harm, which justifies such a brutal statement?
@@Basjoo he didn't say one thing brutal or rude to you, it just sounds that way because 'incompetence' has negative connotations. Remove your feelers and take the word for what it means and, 2 hours compared to 12 minutes is sort of a massive difference. What else explains that if it isn't your mechanical acuity??? Had he used the word acuity instead, you probably don't even blink.
Green bin the waste..!!
We present a number of options for green waste upon enquiry. Some of those options are cut and drop, collect and relocate to compost/green bin, or collect transport and responsibly dispose of. We find presenting these options at enquiry, empowers the consumer to make an informed decision. Thanks for the comment @Trident750UK.
On those occassions where we do collect transport and responsibly dispose of, it goes to the same site that the green bins go to.
The machine is easy to handle and the blade reversal feature saves time unblocking blades when cutting thicker materials. Pitfalls of this machine include: Annoying safety grip on handle near blades; Annoying safety switch near trigger; and annoying tip of the blade that catches when cutting (I've removed the tip protector as it made the catching while cutting even worse than it is without). STIHL SAY this is a professional unit, but it's design indicates that in reality this designation is a lie. As a professional, I DO NOT need safety switches and I DO NOT need the end of my blade giving un-nessecary tension during a delicate cut. I'd also like to see a cover over the battery compartment to further waterproof the machine.
Thanks for your comment @doomedbook1020.
It works very well. 10:34
Hi TwoHawksHuntin. Thanks for commenting. Still using it to this day, works well for us.
I've had the older 86 version for a few years. Very good. Doesn't have the turning handle. I use the AP200 batteries as they're light and get over 2hrs run time. I save the AP500 for my strimmer!
Thanks for commenting Joe. Too right, I'm dancing with the idea of getting another mower, this time battery. Have you had any experience with them?
I use a Stihl RMA 443 VC and it works well for me, with a smaller van and a more all round Horticultural based business. If you do a lot of grass cutting stick to petrol mowers and brushcutters.
@Basjoo no I haven't tried a battery mower yet. I think they would struggle on long wet grass. Maybe they would be fine mid season. I'm looking at petrol zero turns at the moment! Plus a bigger van to put it in!
I have the stihl RMA 443vc use with ap300s battery bought this year nice mower to use. Collection rubbish due to blade design, after being disappointed with it, I re cut the blade with a angle grinder with the cutting bevel upwards to keep pushing grass uphill & it's a different mower. Contacted stihl UK. Told them about my experience they where shit customer service they told me to take to a dealer, what to be told you can't do that. I have never seen a mower blade cut the way, that machine come from the factory that way. As for the machine, box great to get on & off, due to mono handle, vary speed a must if contractor, due to thick grass, it has power. quiet machine. I run my hsa86 on ap100 no bother on light stuff. The less weight the better. Good look.@@Basjoo
Thanks@@adrian_dickinson for the comment. Nice to hear about your experience with the RMA443vc. Improvise and overcome, great work.
Ok you answered my question: "a bit heavy". Initially you expected it to "weigh a ton" so it seems you weren't too bothered by the weight but then you're a young dude. Stihl says the device weighs 6.8 kg (skin only). I can always go into a Stihl shop and see for myself how heavy it is. I'm 67 and had a Victa 82v pole pruner that I found so heavy I had some difficulty using it - even with the harness so...once bitten twice shy! Good luck.
Hi, I guess it's down to whether you'll be using it on your own land or commercially. On own land, you'll probably fine, commercially, the fatigue kicks in. Either way, I can relate, thanks for commenting.
My next purchase will probably be a Stihl extendo hedge cutter. I heard a rumor they'll have a model with higher blade speed and more oomph soon so I'll hold out for next year. Can't wait to get rid of the stench and noise.
@DaEternalNoob, although I still have petrol, I can't remember the last time I picked it up. I suspect the battery gear will only go from strength to strength.
I agree 100%. Weed barrier is the bane of my existence.
It pains me. What would be your advice to anyone looking for a 'low maintenance' solution? I've noted some of ours here www.basjoo.co.uk/low-maintenance
@@Basjoo Well my 1st rule is one years seed equals seven years weed. My go to advise after an initial cleanup usually revolves around dense native plantings and deep mulch. I'm starting to lean more towards drought tolerant plants as well. Watering has become an issue the last few years. Especially for clients without irrigation systems.
Hi Jon been in Horticulture for nearly 30 yrs ,employed at a local stately Home and for the last 10yrs working for my self. I have professional qualifications and the necessary pa1 and pa6 pesticide license. I have been thinking about using my pesticide license more to my benefit for financial reasons and easier on my body . But as you say following all guidance correctly, rather than pull the knapsack out of my van and earn a quick £20.00 extra. But selling this service totally separate to my current work and customer's. Like the said area cordoned off, Warning signs up,full PPE on. But as well as conventional herbicide also organic ones ,for people with pets and children plus stem injection for invasive weeds . I can guarantee that most people running a gardening buissiness dont hold the license and wont get it and are not bothered if it is against the law . A local advertising slot or feature in local paper may be necessary though. Dont plan to do this full time initially but much easier than gardening, which i love but planning ahead .
Hi Simon, thanks for commenting. Yes PA1 & PA6 are good to have under your belt. I find weed control in whatever form taxing, so charge accordingly. Great to hear you are exploring diversifying the business. I personally enjoy the opportunity to explore, play and try out ways to tweak the business. Keeps the brain active.
Awesome bro...
Thanks for commenting.
Nice work. Decent machines too!
Cheers Joe. Hard work, but the lawn and clients appreciate it.
Agreed. I learnt a lot on my PA1 and pa6 course this year. You've reminded me i need a better face mask! Thanks
Hi Joe, not everyones choice, but I think for £30-£50, it's worth it. Great to hear you've acquired the tickets. Thanks for commenting.
Excellent. I would add Sea Spurge, Hairy Bitter Cress and certainly Willow-herb to the line up! All these seem to have become far more prevalent in the last few years. Of course the long rooted field weeds- Dock, Thistle etc are a pain also!
Agree @garethcumming667, I see Willow-herb a fair bit. Hairy Bitter Cress I often see in gardens which like their soil regularly disrupted. Thanks for your comment.
Smart . I have a lot of the pro Stihl battery kit. Very good
I find the strimmer eats the batteries and I'm still using petrol for mower and blower for that reason. Overall I'm impressed, they'res a time and a place for both forms, but it's good for the industry to be transitioning.
@Basjoo agreed. I have the hand held hedge trimmer Hsa86. The hla66 and the extendable hla88 which is heavy. I love the strimmer. Fine for strimming lawn edges. AP500 battery lasts the day. About 50mins. Then we have AP300, and Ap200.
Good video John. All very good points. You really get what you pay for!
Cheers Joe, thanks for watching and commenting.
Marestail/horsetail and bindweed are such a nightmare, because they can grow up to 5 meters deep or more, and the rhizomes spread further, as pro gardeners its always good to know about different weeds, as then we can discover better ways to control them, nice vid...good channel find😀
Thanks for the comment @TKG, enjoyed watching your stuff too.
I’ve got the same telescopic hedge trimmer. You certainly don’t need to do any gym or weight training when using this regularly! I’ve been looking at getting a long pruner but concerned that they’re too long to fit in my van
Agreed Laurence, work is the gym 💪😅😢. The HTA135 featured in the video is a beast. I have a mwb van and have to position it awkwardly diagnol to fit it in. That's in it's shortest state too. Thanks for watching and commenting.
