some new rocks in my house
My rock collection is growing. As a geologist, you collect a lot of rocks and minerals in the field. You start to be more selective over time, and I have gotten to the point where I really only sample rocks that have “tectonic significance”. I will explain.
In this video, I share some new samples I collected this summer during the UArizona Summer Field Geology course around the western interior USA. Arclogites, the Great Unconformity, corals, and pentacrinus fossils - it was a great HAUL. I hope you find it interesting and learn something valuable. Always feel free to ask questions about field geology or how you can become an Earth scientist. I will almost always respond.

Visualizing Geology in Google Earth
มุมมอง 3.1K3 หลายเดือนก่อน
A geologic map is a graphical representation of the distribution of different types of rock and sediment at the Earth's surface. This video shows the easy yet under appreciated workflow to access and download geologic maps that can be loaded into Google Earth Pro. As I show, this is an enlightening and fun way to visualize geology after a hike or walk through nature. I hope you find something i...
Hidden Giant Volcano on Mars!?
มุมมอง 7893 หลายเดือนก่อน
A huge volcano hiding in plain sight on MARS?! A beautiful aspect of being a geologist/geoscientist is that our knowledge from Earth can be applied to other terrestrial planets like Mars. River morphologies on Mars look A LOT like those on Earth… In this video, we dive into a recent study suggesting the presence of a previously undocumented giant volcano on Mars. I share some terrain models fro...

Many Earth scientists use geographic information science/systems (GIS) in their work. Rock & Mineral Collection In The Home Of A Geologist

What A Geologist Sees

One of the many beautiful aspects of studying geosciences is that it literally changes the way you see the world. Man Caden, you started something with that song by Wiz Kalifa. I'm telling my age on this, it was a son by Billy Joel decades ago called "Leave a Tender Moment Alone". I loved it but hadn't heard it a geological age! But I found a version better than Joel's by a group from the Neatherlands: Robin Crauwels Jasper Erckens Ben Vanderweyden - Leave a tender moment alone: th-cam.com/video/GTZ0a9od2Lk/w-d-xo.html . Great words IMHO.

    Great points you made that are applicable from undergrad to Ph.D level study. Reading the classics is a great way to distract yourself for a few hours from your studies. In grad school, I never did it the easy way. When I was almost finished with my geology required coursework, I took a dive into grad-level Medieval English History courses, my first history courses since freshman year in college. Fortunately, the study and writing skills I employed in Geology transferred over well. My biggest honor was when a respected history professor asked for a copy of a paper I wrote to keep on file. She wanted it so that when her grad students complained about not having the time to produce a good paper on short notice, she could whip out my paper and have them look it over, as she considered it a great paper and it was produced by a Geology grad student. I like to think that over the years there were some history grads pissed off at me! The critical factor to learn by grad school is good time management. I was an awful procrastinator when it came to writing, waiting until the last minute to begin the task (I was better doing the research beforehand). Case in point, I procrastinated organizing my thesis proposal one spring semester. After classes were finished, my advisor pulled me aside on a Friday afternoon and said we'd do my proposal on Monday before my thesis committee. I did pull the proposal together over the weekend. It passed and one committee member said it was one of the best proposals she'd heard. But my advisor said I was one of the worst procrastinators he'd had, and yet I could pull together papers on short notice. He just wondered what I could do if I actually spent time on it. I had to agree with him, aand even 40+ years later I still do.

    • @cadenhowlett
      @cadenhowlett 3 หลายเดือนก่อน

      yes, these maps (we usually call them 'quadrangles') are mapped at a scale of 1:24,000. This is a relatively detailed map compared to many of the maps available (for example, 1:100,000 scale or 1:250,000). Melville Mudge, the mapper, walked and collected measurements very close together - he probably covered the whole map area by foot and horse.
